Exploitation, Inequality and Domination: A Re-examination of some fundamental political concepts.
K.U.Leuven
Abstract: This project aims to rejuvenate the contemporary debate on the just society by developing and defending a novel account of exploitation.
The theory of exploitation is presently enjoying a renaissance, thanks to the global pervasiveness of phenomena like forced labour, human
trafficking, sweatshops, guest workers and the rise of the so-called global justice movement. This project aims to re-situate the concept of
exploitation from its present philosophical habitat, viz. distributive justice, to the less familiar (to analytic philosophers) territory of domination. The
account of exploitation I shall defend lends itself to a number of extensions, from the moral assessment of macrophenomena such as contemporary
capitalism and capitalist globalization, to the study of microphenomena such as sweatshops and guest workers.
Seriality in the Contemporary 'Long-Term Television Narrative': Remediation and Migration of the Serial.
K.U.Leuven
Abstract: This project will take a more in-depth look at contemporary television series that produce an overarching narrative that spans the whole
seasonor series, in contrast with TV series whose episodes only function as stand-alone stories. This kind of TV serial, which is called a long-term
television narrative, has boomed in the past decade, and is different from its predecessors in that the narratives are much more complex. This
project will focus on three facets of those TV series: how their seriality is indebted to past serial forms in other media; how the complexity ofthe
storylines forms a vast narrative with branches into various other media and texts; and how seriality is formed and guaranteed through the
underlying structure of the episodes, seasons and series.
Theology and the Quest for Authentic Humanity: The Theological Existentialism of John Macquarrie
K.U.Leuven
Abstract: Our doctoral project seeks to raise the question of the nature, and more importantly, the question of the relevance, of existential theology.
It can be asserted that serious research into existentialist theology today has largely ceased and there is a prevailing attitude that this brandof
theology has had its day. Thus, our project will seek to inquire into the works of one of the most prominent Anglo-Saxon expositors of existentialist
theology, John Macquarrie (1919-2007), and using Macquarrie#s approach to existentialism as a test-case to investigate the legitimacy of the
(#classical#) charges against existentialist theology. Our work will progress in a threefold manner: Firstly, we shall provide an overview of the main
concerns of existentialist theology by means of a discussion of the main existentialist themes developed by two prominent existentialist thinkers who
influenced Macquarrie, namely, R. Bultmann and M. Heidegger. Secondly, we will outline the main contours and the disti
The Turn towards Concrete Reality in Twentieth-Century Theology: An Historical-Critical Study of Gustave Thils Theology
of History
K.U.Leuven
Abstract: In historical research on the Roman Catholic Church in the twentieth-century, the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) is a point of
intense interest. Research at the KU Leuven Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies focuses on movements of renewal preceding the Council,
the Belgian contribution to the Council and the revolutionary thought of theological openness towards the world. However, interest in the #theology
of history#and the role of Gustave Thils (1908-2000), one of its main proponents, have until now been largely neglected. In his ground-breaking
book, Théologie des réalités terrestres, Thils produced #one of the most fundamental and articulate presentations of a #theology of history# ever
written#(Connolly 1965; cf. also Gibellini#s standard work 1992; 20076). The current proposed research project will fill a lacuna within studies on
Thils# theological #uvre in the following ways: (A) It aims to give an account of #theology of history# as a theological trend, or current, of
Contemporary Orthodox ¨Perspectives on the Filioque: Dumitru Staniloaes and John Zizioulas Trinitarian Ecclesiology
and its Implications for the Ecumenical Dialogue
K.U.Leuven
Towards An Empowering Theological Ethical Vision on Informal Work: Guidelines for Future Catholic Social Teaching and
Strategies for Improving the Conditions of Unorganised Labourers in India
K.U.Leuven
Abstract: The growing predominance of informal and casual employment has been oneof the essential features of the labour market in India. While
the former is labour that is not officially registered, the latter refers to working in bad conditions. Informal work covers a diversified set of economic
activities both in agricultural and non-agricultural sector. The Church Social Teaching mainly focuses on regular working conditions but doesnot pay
