The desired a-alkenes in the C1+&r<strong>an</strong>ge are used as feeds<strong>to</strong>ck in the production<br />

of detergent alcohols <strong>an</strong>d in the synthesis of lubric<strong>an</strong>ts, the c&10 alkenes are used<br />

as plasticizer alcohols in phthalates for PVC, <strong>an</strong>d as comonomers in low-density<br />

polyethylene, <strong>an</strong>d a variety of other products. The internal by-products are<br />

mainly used for the production of alcohols via a cobalt-catalyzed hydroformylation.<br />

Scale<br />

The typical size of the Shell process pl<strong>an</strong>t described here is 250,000 <strong>to</strong>ns per<br />

year. The <strong>to</strong>tal production of higher olefins includes several alternative routes
