occasions I discussed this with the young whipper snappers that we as Bums had to play. They laughed and declared that I was citing ancient history. After the war, T.A.C. (Tybee Athletic Club) was formed. We played the normal team sports. Most of our competition placed the north end of the island against the south end. This led to strong feelings of loyalty to our north or south teams. However, when we went to play Wilmington Island, Tattnal Homes, or other communities, we became family and were totally inseparable! Back in those days, Tybee was a much simpler tight-knit community. The Bums came along as an outlet for physical entertainment. A group of old hasbeens joined a league of young skillful softball teams. Our purpose was to have fun on the field and enjoy fellowship off the field. We one only a few games, we did however win all the parties after the games! 6 Tybee Breeze This all led up to a mock homecoming parade known as the Beach Bums. Hopefully our beloved parade will live and grow as a memorial for the Bums and Tybee community. I have attended all of the Beach Bum Parades. I regard these as good clean fun, (no pun intended). My grandsons, Parker Moody (9), Jared Gibson (12), Taylor Missroon (14), and Alan Missroon III (20), regard this as a highlight of their entertainment. They have thoroughly enjoyed attending most of the past parades! As your Grand Marshal, I would like to ask everyone to have fun but please act responsibly when using water guns. Please refrain from shooting people near the eyes or the face. Let’s make this an event which the Beach Bums and all of Tybee Island can be proud! Alan Missroon, Grand Marshal
All All Hale Hale to to the the the Queen Queen Jenny Jenny Orr Orr I opened Fannies on the Beach in June of 1992. That was the last year I got to stand on the side lines and soak other people. Our first parade entry was in May 1993 and it was a doozy, topped by the brilliant idea to strap a Mermaid on a convertible and hit the parade! We went as far as “renting” a convertible, then (after a couple of Fannie Slappers) convincing a guest of Cobbs Apartments to dress up in a mermaid costume and allow us to tie her to the front of the car! Tybee’s Captain Longwater, Mike Harvey and Atlanta Attorney James Stoddard were all at the helm! By the time our poor mermaid rounded the Strand to Fannies, she and the convertible looked like they’d gotten stuck for days in one of those automatic car washes! Some of our funniest floats were a life size fiberglass Cow dressed in a polka dot bikini, novelty blow up dolls dressed up as lifeguards, or our Steamship that won a trophy because they thought it was a rolling moonshine still! One of my favorite floats of all was when Joanie made a Land Shark out of an old Toyota and 1000 Styrofoam plates. Beach Bums means so much to me personally…I mean, what a great time…I get to have great laughs with my staff, huge fun with all the local maniacs…it’s like when you get to the line-up, it’s the best part of the party! You almost pee your pants laughing at the crazy floats and fun everyone is having! And, I get the greatest thrill seeing all the friends and familiar faces from all over the place, that come back year after year, to the parade and to Fannies… It’s just one of those Tybee thangs! I can’t tell you how honored I am (o.k., so I had a little coaxing…) to be named Queen of the Beach Bums!
