“Still “Still “Still “Still “Still Crazy Crazy Crazy Crazy Crazy after after after after after all all all all all these these these these these Years…!” Years…!” Years…!” Years…!” Years…!”
A lot of water flows under the
bridge over two decades. Jack
Boylston and Jiggs Watson, joint
Patriarchs of Tybee’s
infamous ‘Beach Beach
Bum Bum Parade Parade,’ Parade ha ve
been drenched in a
whole lot of water
over the years! The
two partners in crime
were fun loving,
adventurous, and relatively
young men at the start of that first
‘Beach Beach Bum Bum Bum Parade’ Parade’ back in
1987. Twenty years, twenty-one
parades, and a few gray hairs
later - they both remain very
young at heart and undeniably,
“Still Crazy After all these
Years”!
Joining Jack and Jiggs in
this time honored “Tybee frivolity”
is Alan Alan Missroon Missroon Missroon as Grand
Marshal, Jenny Jenny Orr Orr as her heiness
the Queen, and Mike Mike Corbett Corbett, Corbett
as the Big Kahuna. The 2007
parade will commence on the
Friday night May 18th by Debbie
Brady
Robinson
Jack, “moving it back to the last
locals’ weekend helps business. It’s
another good reason to get folks to
come to Tybee!”
When asked how the whole
thing got started in the first place? “It
was strictly accidental,” says Jack. “It
was Spring 1987. We were all still
hanging out at the Desoto. Several of
us, including Jiggs, Tommy
Clark, John O’Neill and
myself, decided to go out and
play some softball with the
guys at the ball park. Those
guys were killin’ us,” said
Jack in exasperation! “They
were really playing hard ball -
knocking it clean out of the Park!
They were pros! Our out field
couldn’t keep up. We decided to form
our own team with our own
standards. Anybody could play on
‘The The The Beach Beach Bums’ Bums’ team! There
were no requirements. It was like
T-ball - we had an ‘every kid’ gets to
play motto!”
, at 6:30
PM, marking the beginning of
‘the last locals weekend’
declares Jiggs Watson. A
number of folks have been “We had thirty guys that first
confused about the move from spring,” continued Jack. “Everyone
Memorial Day weekend, but Jack got to play, but not everyone got to
and Jiggs both insist that the bat. We won only one game, but we
Beach Beach Beach Bum Bum Parade Parade was had more fun than those other teams.
traditionally held on the last
locals’ weekend. Besides says
The Bums really hammed it up, but
we had class, too! We wore peach colored
jerseys, had the Bummettes (our own
cheerleaders), and our own video
photographer, Dr. Mike Milford. Doc might
have been a little tipsy more often than not,
however - we got a lot of footage of the tree
tops and tops of our shoes! We even had our
own post game interview session! We would
all gather at the DeSoto’s Ship Watch Lounge
immediately following the games. The Band
(Ron Denning, Ron Ambose, Dan Arno, and
Charlie Sherril) would play, “Take Me Out to
the Bums Game,” as we filed in after each
game!”
“There was only one time when we
really won big,” recollects Jack! “We built an
old out-house (complete with crescent moon in
the door), hauled it to the ball park, and placed
it under the score board. Our whole team beat
the crap out of it with our softball bats (it’s a
good thing it was a fake out-house)! We were
so psyched, that we actually scored that day!
We won 16/15, but were embarrassed - it broke
4
Tybee Breeze
the tradition! Everyone got a trophy - mini
Budweiser bottles mounted on wooden bases
complete with metal plates! Forget MVP - our
awards were more appropriate, “Most Obvious
Bum” and “Rusty Jock Award” to name a few!
The sad part is that no one knows the
whereabouts of the highlight footage shot by
Dr. Milford. It’s a “Cold Case” of the missing
tapes! John O’Neill should probably be the
one locked up for the crime, says Jack, or
maybe Gordon Varnedo is the culprit! I suspect
they’re waiting until were all gone to release
them. The tapes need to be found now - it’s
High Treason!”
The ‘Beach Beach
Bum Bum Parade’ Parade’ got
started on a whim,
recalls Jack (but it
wasn’t until the
second year when
someone threw
water balloons that the parade turned wet)! We
decided to do something a little different and
have our own home coming game parade the
Friday before Memorial Day Weekend - the
Last Locals weekend. We had posters and
banners, and our own ‘Pots and Pans Kazoo
band,’ chuckled Jack. “Carl Looper came out in
full regalia as Uncle Sam on stilts! There were
no parade permits, and no advertising. The
parade route was from the18th Street parking
lot (in front of Cobb’s Apts.) to the Desoto
Beach Club parking lot.”
“1987 was a big year for the ‘Beach Beach
Bums’ Bums’ and a big year personally. It was the
year that Nancy and I got engaged,” explains
Jack. “John O’Neill pulled some strings, and
we were named King and Queen of the Home
Coming Dance - not to be confused with the
‘Beach Beach Bum Bum Parade’ Parade’ dignitaries! Sally
Pearce was the first Beach Bum Parade
Queen, 1987 & 88. And Bob and Betty Ann
Davenport were the Grand Marshals, all long
since passed away, it’s sad to say. The Big
Kahuna tradition didn’t begin until 1990.
Gordon Varnedo turned fifty that year, so we
made him the Big Kahuna!”

Alan Missroon, and Mike Corbett are off one hell of a mean water gun!”
both Original Beach Bum team Players, and
Jenny Orr has been an active participant, “as
far back as I can remember,” says Jenny!
“Still crazy after all these years…!”
“We’re proud of the fact that Fannie’s has had a A A Few Few Words Words of of their their Own Own -
fifteen years, beams Jiggs! We know Jenny is
safe, we’ll probably remain at the helm. We’re morning papers. These same prisoners cut the
these days, gleams Jack, but we can still fire
grass on the Bum’s field. On several
occasions I discussed this with the young
whipper snappers that we as Bums had to play.
They laughed and declared that I was citing
ancient history.
After the war, T.A.C. (Tybee Athletic
Club) was formed. We played the normal team
sports. Most of our competition placed the
north end of the island against the south end.
This led to strong feelings of loyalty to our north
or south teams. However, when we went to play
Wilmington Island, Tattnal Homes, or other
communities, we became family and were
totally inseparable! Back in those days, Tybee
was a much simpler tight-knit community.
The Bums came along as an outlet for
physical entertainment. A group of old hasbeens
joined a league of young skillful softball
teams. Our purpose was to have fun on the
field and enjoy fellowship off the field. We one
only a few games, we did however win all the
parties after the games!
6
Tybee Breeze
This all led up to a mock homecoming
parade known as the Beach Bums. Hopefully
our beloved parade will live and grow as a
memorial for the Bums and Tybee community. I
have attended all of the Beach Bum Parades. I
regard these as good clean fun, (no pun
intended). My grandsons, Parker Moody (9),
Jared Gibson (12), Taylor Missroon (14), and
Alan Missroon III (20), regard this as a highlight
of their entertainment. They have thoroughly
enjoyed attending most of the past parades!
As your Grand Marshal, I would like to
ask everyone to have fun but please act
responsibly when using water guns. Please
refrain from shooting people near the eyes or
the face. Let’s make this an event which the
Beach Bums and all of Tybee Island can be
proud!
I opened Fannies
on the Beach in June of
1992. That was the last
year I got to stand on the
side lines and soak other
people. Our first parade entry
was in May 1993 and it was a doozy, topped by
the brilliant idea to strap a Mermaid on a
convertible and hit the parade! We went as far
as “renting” a convertible, then (after a couple
of Fannie Slappers) convincing a guest of
Cobbs Apartments to dress up in a mermaid
costume and allow us to tie her to the front of
the car! Tybee’s Captain Longwater, Mike
Harvey and Atlanta Attorney James Stoddard
were all at the helm! By the time our poor
mermaid rounded the Strand to Fannies, she
and the convertible looked like they’d gotten
stuck for days in one of those automatic car
washes!
We wised up a little by the next year and
haven’t missed a Beach Bums Parade in fifteen
bikini, novelty blow up dolls dressed up as
lifeguards, or our Steamship that won a trophy
almost pee your pants laughing at the crazy
Corbett!
I was approached
by my wife 20 yrs ago to
play softball on Tybee
with a new team that was
being put together. I was a
little hesitant because my softball days ended
years earlier and I was more or less out of
shape. She said, “don’t worry honey, it’s not that
kind of team, I think they are all a little older and
out of shape!” We were only living on Tybee a
short time and thought it would be good to
make some new friends. So with skepticism, I
went out to meet my new team.
I showed up at J.C. park with new glove
in hand, new pants and shoes to find a team
that looked like I could have fun with. I was
found to be the young pup on a team of old
farts! WOW, what a time in my life that was
playing on a team that never practiced and
barely ever won, but the friendships and
camaraderie will be with us forever. To be
cheered on by the Bummettes then followed up
with an ice cold beer and home videos of the
games at the old Desoto beach motel. What
great memories I have; and to be a part of the
orginal bums! This will always be one of the
proudest and greatest times in my life!
Thanks for the memories and honor, team!!!!
Dear Fran,
Can you tell me where the wet T-shirt contest will
be on the day of the Beach Bum Parade? I’ve
heard amazing things about the sights. Is there an
entry fee?
Can’t Wait!
Wett N. Wilde
Dear Mr./Ms Wilde,
The only fee for the contest is making sure you
look good soaked. The wet t-shirt contest is held
at the corner of Butler Avenue and Tybrisa Street.
And in front of City Hall. And in the North Beach
Parking Lot. And in front of Fannie’s on the Beach.
And just past the big curve. And…. Well, you get
the picture.
See you soon,
Fran
Dear Fran,
I was swimming along just off the beach, watching
this guy running along, and I was almost plowed
over by a jet ski. Somebody needs to let those hot
shot jet ski guys know our swimming habits
around here.
Porpoisely yours,
Flipper
Dear Flipper,
I agree. The ocean belongs to all you dolphins. We
humans will make an effort to be more careful. Oh,
and stay away from the pier and look out for the
kite boarders too.
Yours truly,
Fran
Dear Fran,
A few of my card playing friends in our Seniors
Only Club fall asleep in their chairs and slide under
the table. What should I say when they wake up
and sit back down?
Thank you,
Confused at 80
Dear Confused,
I’ve found that yelling either “Deal or No Deal” or
“Blackjack” sometimes helps jolt people back to
reality. I use that on my husband Fred when he
falls asleep in front of the TV and starts to slip off
the sofa.
Ante up!
Fran
Dear Fran,
A mean boy at St. Michael’s School
called me pond scum and made an
ugly face at me. That really hurt my
feelings. The next day, I called him
oozing lava butt. Did I go over the top? Do
you think I’ll get into trouble for that and not be
able to go to graduation?
Wondering on Butler Avenue,
Cissy Confessor
Dear Cissy,
I don’t think you should get into trouble. You were
just showing your verbal creativity.
You ARE a student, right?
Now I’m wondering,
Fran
Dear Fran
Dear Fran,
I keep seeing this ad about Benny’s having the
coldest beer in America. Just what device do you
people use to ascertain if that’s really true?
Just inquiring,
Bub Lee Brewsky
Dear Bub,
Tybee has the BEST of everything in America.
Therefore, the claim must be true. We on Tybee
need no other measuring device.
Cheers!
Fran
Dear Fran,
I’m exhausted. There are so many reality shows
on TV that I feel like I’m living all these lives of other
people I don’t even know. I can’t sing. I can’t
dance. I don’t want to be in a race or stranded
somewhere without air conditioning, but I CAN’T
QUIT WATCHING! What can I do????
Help me,
REALLY FRANTIC!
Dear REALLY FRANTIC,
TURN OFF THE TV NOW! Ok, now that you’ve
managed to do that, let me tell you about a new
support group that is being formed. It’s called
Reality TV Addicts Anonymous (RTAA) and is
going to start meeting around the island on the
nights when Survivor, American Idol, Dancing with
the Stars, The Amazing Race and other addicting
type shows come on. Of course, I guess that
means there will be a meeting almost every night of
the week.
Don’t touch that Dial!
Tybee Breeze
By Judy O’Neill
Here I am one of many who feel compelled to write
about automated phone systems. I hate them
more and more as I get older and older or, maybe,
busier and busier. They waste my precious time,
try my limited patience, and inspire my anger and
frustration.
Chances are that if I’m making a call to a company
that has an automated phone system, I’m
frustrated or confused about something already.
Getting the “Please listen carefully as our options
have changed” is like hearing fingernails scraping
the chalk board. I don’t care that they’ve changed.
Just hurry up and get on with the trial and error
ordeal you’re going to put me through to get me to a
correct choice in your recently changed system.
Not long ago, I made a call to our “new” Georgia
Power. Now, you get a voice. You don’t get “please
press one.” You don’t get the “our options have
changed.” I think who-hoo! This is going to be
great. And...it’s NOT great. It’s more frustrating
and time consuming. I don’t get to vent by pressing
buttons ‘til my finger hurts and the phone is
damaged. I have to SAY something to the
automated pleased-as-punch and sweet-as-sugar
voice. WHAT!? After I hear her tell me she can
help me and listen to and respond correctly to
several of the voice prompt choices, I realize that
what I really want to say is not lady like and
rhymes with…well, never mind. Why isn’t there
just a choice that says “If you just have a simple
question, please press one”? It took forever to
respond to the choices, say and spell by last
name, the name of my cat, my mother’s mother’s
maiden name, give the last four digits of my social
security number and repeat my account number
no less than four times. Eventually, I got the choice
of “none of the above” and got a REAL person.
By the time I got the live body, I was so beat up by
the “pleasant” experience that I almost couldn’t
remember the ONE SIMPLE QUESTION I needed
to ask. After I managed to ask the ONE SIMPLE
QUESTION, I got one simple answer. Guess what
it was. Yep! The infamous “I don’t really know and
can’t help you with that.” Then she put me on hold,
sent me back to the automated system, and left me
with no answer at all! Click.
The other choice we need in all these systems has
to do with language issues. Let’s say I’m having a
completely stupid moment about my computer or
other device that can out think me. I call the “Help
Line.” After thirty minutes or more, I get a tech
support person who has a name that I can’t
pronounce and may not have any vowels in it as
far as I can tell. I ask my question. From then on, I
hear a language that does not resemble the
English I speak or have ever heard in any way. It’s
the “Bollywood” help line. We need an option that
gives us a person who speaks English “AS A
FIRST LANGUAGE.” I can’t be culture sensitive
and deal with language difficulties on top of
technical difficulties. I was raised a southern girl
and taught NEVER to insult a person or hurt
anyone’s feelings. So that means I’m reluctant to
say to the ESL person on the other end of the line

that I can’t understand a dad-blame word they’re
saying and to puh-lease give me somebody who
speaks English. I’m still surprised when I have to
choose to hear all the choices in English. Press
one to hear English. Press two to hear Spanish.
Press three to make sure the message in English
is given to you by a person you can understand.
And, finally, I get exasperated with not only the live
person on the other end of the line (if I ever manage
to get one) but with myself as well. Especially
when I find myself starting to apologize for needing
help. What’s up with that? Sometimes the Help
Line Person is so rude or so bored sounding that I
don’t press her/him for explanations or answers.
Plus, have you ever noticed that you’re often
asked to enter in your 25-digit account number,
followed by the # sign, and other personal stuff and
when/if you get to talk to somebody, they ask you
for the exact same information again? I think all
that entering in stuff is just to keep us busy and
give us something to do while we’re on hold. Then
there’s the thing about the conversation being
monitored to ensure that I get good service. And
one time, when I got absolutely no help and no
direction to get any help from anywhere in the
entire universe, the woman on the Help Line had
the audacity to ask if I found the service I’d
received satisfactory and if they had solved my
problems. I was speechless. Which, I guess, she
assumed meant I had no complaints.
Please press one if you’ve had similar
experiences. Press two to invent your own menu
options. Press three to have this translated into
another language. Press zero to exit this article
and…. Click!
Tybee Breeze 13

These snippets are based on a large record book kept in a safe at City Hall containing
the handwritten minutes of council meetings and other happenings in the Town of
Tybee from 1887 until 1925. I have tried to find those items that will be of the
greatest interest and amusement to Tybee readers of a century later. I include many
names since it was apparent from the start that a lot of Tybee folks of today will
know, indeed be related to, some of these people of yesteryear.
Random Ramblings from
1890 - 1891 Council Meetings
Property Tax Appeals - At the Town Council
meeting of July 15, 1890, a “Communication was
read from Messrs Bohand Floyd and S. Reynolds
relative to excessive [property] taxes, to which the
Clerk was instructed to reply and inform Messrs
Bohand Floyd and S. Reynolds that the assessment
committee had done what they considered justice to
all parties in making their valuations and that
Council could not consider any appeal for reduction
in their taxation.” I believe this same committee now
works for the Chatham County Board of
Equalization.
All’s Well That Ends Well - The regular council
meeting of August 8, 1890, added two new
committees - one to look into a request from William
B. Stilwell and others to build “street railway”
through certain streets on the island and the other
to determine the cost of fencing in the “Park.”
Following that, the Clerk was instructed to ask the
Tybee Beach Company to remove an obstructive
sign post on the strand placed to advertise the
company’s streets and lots. Then, Councilman Blum
reported that he was unable to “affect the insurance
of the ‘Town Hall.’” There was no indication whether
this was related to hurricane threats. [Hurricanes
were rampant in the 19 th century with the big blow
of 1893 just three years off.] The meeting ended
when “An invitation was read from Councilman Blum
to the Mayor and Councilmen of the Town of Tybee
to accept his hospitality at the ‘Ocean House’ after
the meeting of Council.” His invitation was
“Accepted.”
Liquor Licenses Too High – Recall that at Tybee’s
first council meeting of April 25, 1890 the price of a
liquor license was set at $100 per year. Actually, it
was “the price of a license to sell malt, vinous or
spirituous liquors within the limits of said town.” A
year later, at its meeting of April 10, 1891, council
upped the license fee for “dealers in malt, vinous or
14 Tybee Breeze
Written by Bernie Goode
spirituous liquors” to $150. Other fees set at that
meeting included hotel and boarding house
keepers, keepers of public eating and billiard tables
as well as tables where pool is played - $5 per
table; rifle range - $5; lunch stand, lemonade stand,
soda water stand, lunch counter, eating stand, fruit
stand - $10; amusement show houses, aerial
tramways, restaurants or eating houses, livery
stables - $5; owners of vehicles for hire - $5. With
these bargains, apparently some citizens felt the
liquor license fee was too high. On May 19, 1891,
Messrs Naylor, Graham, Smith, Tosatch, and Ryan
asked Council to reconsider the liquor fee. At its
meeting of June 16, 1891, Council passed a
resolution rolling the fee back to $100: “Whereas
the license fee for selling liquor in the Town of Tybee
for the present fiscal year has been found to be
larger than the business of the town warrants and a
lesser license fee should be established, Be it
resolved that the license fee for selling liquor in the
Town of Tybee for the fiscal year ending May 1 st ,
1892 be placed at the sum of one hundred dollars.”
Engineer Hired, Attorney Fired – July 22, 1891:
“The Mayor reported that the overflow from the
water works was running into the ground of George
Wortham.” [Many of you know Tybee resident
Michael Bart who is George Wortham’s great
grandson. You can read more about Wortham and
his land on the plaque at Memorial Cemetery.] This
led to a resolution authorizing the Committee on
Drainage and Sanitation “to employ an engineer to
ascertain levels and the cost of constructing a
sewer for drainage purposes and to report the
same back to Council.” After considering bids for
the position of Corporation Attorney, Council
selected O’Connor and O’Byrne at an annual salary
of $150. This led to a resolution to terminate the
services of the current attorney: “Resolved that the
Mayor and Councilmen regret on account of the
amount of compensation exacted by Mr. J.R
Saucey, Jr. as Attorney for the Town of Tybee for the
ensuing year they are compelled to decline his
services.”

Breast Cancer
More than 1.2 million women are diagnosed with
breast cancer each year. The American Cancer
Society estimates that over 178,000 new cases of
invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2007
with 41,000 deaths, although the rates have been
dropping since 1990. The incidence increases after
age 30 with 75% of all cases occurring between
ages 40 and 75. Breast cancer is the second
leading cause of death in women, after lung cancer.
Women who have mothers, sisters or daughters
with the disease are at much greater risk. We can
probably all name someone we know who has had
breast cancer. Those who have been cured are
those who discovered their disease early,
therefore early detection is crucial. An increase in
screening accounts for much of the reason that the
rates have been steadily dropping. Another reason
is possibly the later age of women for their first
pregnancy, as well as a decrease in the number of
children. Some studies point to induced abortions
as also increasing the risk.
The five year survival rate for women with breast
cancer is 81-86% if detected early. When breast
cancer is confined to the breast, the rate increases
to 100%. If the cancer has spread, the rate can
decrease to less than 18%. Women detect 90% of
breast lumps themselves and about 50% of these
lumps have already spread beyond the breast. The
cancer usually spreads to the nearby lymph nodes
and from these to other organs of the body.

Fortunately, there
appears to be a long
phase before the
breast lump is
usually felt that the
tumor can be
detected by other
methods. The period
may last for two or
three years and can
be detected by
mammography.
Regular careful self
examination of the
breast is also an effective means of early detection.
The American Cancer Society recommends
monthly self exam supplemented by
mammography...The latter could reduce mortality
from breast cancer by over 30%. Today’s fast film
and improved techniques produce excellent results
with greatly reduced radiation.
The American Cancer Society also recommends
that all women age 40 and older have an annual
clinical breast exam
as well as a
mammogram. The
Society also
advocates that all
women over age 20
have physical
breast exams
periodically and
perform self
examinations
monthly.
The secret to
success in breast
cancer treatment lies in early detection. The best
time for detection is before the woman or her
physician is aware of the lesion. Such cancer is
detectable only with mammography since it is the
ideal way to reach the greatest number of women.
The statistics for this deadly disease are
frightening, but they can be changed. Ask your
doctor about mammography and information on
breast self examination. It could save your life.
“ Welcome to Ty-B. Please obey all laws and rules
of the beach to make TY-B a better place
to visit and live. Have a good day.”
--Chief Jimmy Price
20
Frequent Fliers
We’re always happy to accommodate
criminals who want to get arrested, especially
those who don’t get the message the first time.
On Saturday, March 24, at 4:09 in the
afternoon, Sgt. Fobes responded to the Tybrisa
Pier and Pavilion on the report of a drunk male
causing problems. There he found a white male
from Bloomingdale holding on to the railing of the
ramp leading up to the pier, holding on because “he
Tybee Breeze
...On the beat
with Tybee Police Chief
Jimmy Price & Major Chris Case
couldn’t stand up without” it. Sgt. Fobes arrested
him, patted him down, and found a half-smoked
marijuana joint in his pocket. At the station, after
some drunken ramblings, he was discovered to be
only twenty years old. He was booked for public
intoxication, underage drinking, and marijuana
possession. Several hours later he bonded out
through an agent and was released.
The next day, this time at 4:47, Sgt. Fobes
and Ofc. Valdes went back to the pier on a report of
a fight on the beach. Ofc. Valdes approached the
subjects, who scattered, but not before he got a
good look at them. He
radioed the description,
and Sgt. Fobes cornered
the offender in front of the
Breakfast Club. It was the
white male from Bloomingdale.
Again. He was drunk again, and had
scratches on his face. He was
arrested for the second time in as
many days, this time for underage
drinking, obstruction by fleeing and affray. We
haven’t had to arrest him since then, so maybe he
got the message.
On St. Patrick’s Day, Corporal Saunders
responded to a local motel on a report of a
domestic disturbance. There he found two couples
arguing loudly. All four were somewhat intoxicated.
One of the females stated that she wasn’t going to
get into trouble for the other three just because she
was over twenty-one years of age. With that tip, it
was quickly determined that the other three weren’t
twenty-one years of age. The three were arrested
for underage drinking and taken to the station,
where the female quickly bonded out and was
released.
But the two males took longer to find a
bondsman willing to do business with them, and it
wasn’t until almost midnight before they were
released. A short time later, Officer Powers

spotted the pair on a bicycle on Butler Avenue.
Corporal Heckman was familiar with the situation
and knew they hadn’t had a bicycle when they
were arrested. Saunders and Heckman
approached the pair as they were wheeling the
bike into the motel hallway. Heckman recognized
the bicycle as one he had seen earlier in a
resident’s front yard near the station. The two
males were separated and questioned. Their
stories about where the bike came from didn’t
match, so they were arrested for a second time in
one day. Charged with theft by taking, they were
transported to the Chatham County Jail later that
night. The bicycle was returned to the yard.
Early Summer
Both of the above
incidents occurred in March,
and were just a small part
of a much bigger picture.
It seems this year the
summer season began on
St. Patrick’s Day weekend, at
least for us. On that weekend,
the third weekend in March, TIPD
officers made a total of 41
arrests. On the next weekend,
32 more offenders made the
ride to the station. And on the last weekend of
March, between Friday afternoon and late Sunday
night, a total of 55 assorted criminals were taken
off the streets and locked up. When we closed the
books on March, a total of 139 custodial arrests
were counted, as well as 319 assorted citations for
traffic offenses and local ordinance violations. For
the first time, we began the Beach Patrol and the
Bike Patrol in the month of March. We don’t usually
do that until April or May.
We’ve noticed in the past few years that
the St. Patrick’s Day weekend can bring us a big
jump in activity, as Tybee Island absorbs the
overflow from Savannah’s big parade and street
party. After that weekend, the weather held up as
warm and sunny, and even if the ocean wasn’t
warm enough for swimming, large numbers of daytrippers
and weekend tourists began showing up
on Tybee. Right now we’re just wondering if we’ll
see things slow down a bit before the next big
event—the Beach Bum Parade on May 18.
The Beach Bum Parade
Speaking of which,
it’s almost time for that
memorable annual event
known as the Beach Bum
Parade. We know that
those Tybeeites who read
the Breeze are all well-mannered and totally aware
of the proper Beach Bum rules of conduct, but we’ll
take the time to spell them out again.
1. Not everyone is part of the parade/water fight.
Senior citizens and other unsuspecting drivers
who blunder into the combat zone without realizing
what they’re getting into should be allowed to
proceed on their way with nothing more than a wet
heaving buckets of water inside is not in the spirit
of the parade. People who do so will find
themselves in the backseat of a patrol car, or
possibly our trusty paddy wagon.
happen.
The city will have one of those flashing
information signs on Highway 80 saying
something like: “Water fight ahead. Roll up
windows. Lock doors.” Maybe it will help.
22
Our Hometown Hero...
...this month is Lt. Bob Bryson, our criminal
investigator. While getting warrants signed at the
Tybee Breeze
judge’s office in Savannah, near the end of March,
he spotted wanted car thief Alan Heyward Bland
walking downtown near Drayton and Harris
Streets. His picture had been in the newspaper the
previous week, with stories of his exploits. Bland
had eluded capture for over three years, all the
while managing to steal numerous cars by tricking
sellers into letting him take a “test ride.” But Bryson
also knew Bland from his time on the old Metro
Drug Squad, when the detective used him as an
informant.
Bob detained the fugitive, positively ID’ed
him, and called for backup. Metro patrol units
arrived within a few minutes and took him away,
charging him with multiple felony warrants. A press
release the next day thanked Lt. Bryson for his
assistance.
High Tech Animal Control.
Corporal Heckman attended a five-day
course at the Cobb County Law Enforcement
Academy in north Georgia, early in March. This
course covered all the aspects of modern animal
control operations, including such topics as Wild
and Exotic Animals, State Animal Laws, Cruelty
Investigations, Animal Capture
and Restraint, and Crime
Scene Processing involving
animals.
During the course, Cpl.
Heckman learned of a free offer
for animal microchip scanners.
In case you missed a previous column that dealt
with this subject, here’s what that means. Vets can
now implant a tiny microchip under the skin of
various animals, most often family pets like cats
and dogs. When a special device is waved closely
over the chip, an identifying number is displayed,
linking the animal to its owner. Heckman called the
Bayer Corporation—the same company that
makes the aspirin—and a pair of new universal
scanners arrived in the mail shortly thereafter.
We were donated one scanner in 2006 by
Dr. Patrick Bremer, and we’ve used it ever since.
But it only identifies one certain kind of chip. The
new ones are capable of ID’ing all of the current

microchips made by different manufacturers. We
now use both of the devices, scanning every
Rescue Mission
Reports
April 15, 2007
Mission Type: Normal
Parents concerned about 2 young people who had gone
camping.
With a near gale wind blowing and darkness setting in
two boats left the Crab Shack and met up with a third in
the Back River. Boat four launched from the lazaretto
creek boat landing and all four headed to the location of
the campsite. In route we encountered four vessels
(loaded very heavy) spread out along the way heading
for home. The two missing people were found on one of
these vessels and were fine. We advised them to call
home and give their parents a break. We continued on to
the campsite to offer a ride home to anyone else who
may want one…and found no takers. On the return trip
we stayed with the slowest boat to insure their safety.
Results: Mission successful
After returning four of the responding MRS members
“switched hats” and worked with the Tybee Island Fire
Dept. until almost midnight, as they responded to
numerous calls about power lines down and transformer
explosions.
Confusion…Confusion….Confusion……
Hopefully I can clear some of this up here: The 21 st
We in the media get a lot of messages from a lot of
people. Sometimes it’s tough sifting through the
e-mail, voice-mail, and snail mail trying to decide
just what to use in this column. Several months
ago I received a rather lengthy package from “The
Guys at DPW.” DPW is, of course, The
Department of Public Works. I have edited the
document so as to eliminate any comments that
may be interpreted by some to be sexist in nature.
This was a tough job, by the way. Let’s just jump
right in.
The first line pretty much sums it up: “Men are not
mind readers.” Simple and to the point. I like that.
“Ask for what you want. Let us be clear on this
one. Strong hints do not work. Obvious hints do
not work. Just say it.”
“Anything we said six months ago is inadmissible
in an argument. In fact, all comments become null
and void after seven days.”
26
Tybee Breeze
“If you think you’re fat, you probably are. Don’t ask
us.”
If we ask what’s wrong, and you say nothing, we
will act like nothing is wrong. We know you’re lying
but, it’s not worth the hassle.”
“Crying is blackmail.”
“A headache which lasts for seventeen months is a
medical problem. Please see a doctor.”
“When you have to go somewhere, anything you
wear is fine…really!”
“You can either ask us to do something, or tell us
how you want it done. Not both. Christopher
Columbus didn’t need directions and neither do
we.” (Y’all may have pushed the envelope on that
one.)
And finally, I really didn’t want to add this last one,
but what the heck. “Learn to work the toilet seat.
You’re a big girl. We need it up; you need it down. If
it’s up, put it down. You don’t hear us complaining
about this one.”
And, it’s signed, “The Guys.” Guys, I’d say you
have really stepped in it this time. Thanks for the
advice. (By the way, you fellers didn’t get this off
the internet did you?)
In closing, it looks like Chicago Bob is finally going
to write the story of his life. It should be a great
read. See ya next month.

The City of Tybee Island gives the YMCA the opportunity to breathe
some new Life into the Tybee Gymnasium
At the Tybee City Council meeting Thursday, February 22, 2007, City
council voted in a change of the contract between the YMCA and the
City of Tybee Island. The new contract basically defines a new
direction for the two entities wherein lies a collaboration that should
help in solving some of the problems that have been daunting both
parties for some time now. For the City, this new deal will not only help
to offset some of the financial burden of staffing and maintaining their
somewhat controversial yet beautiful new Solomons/Youmans
Complex, it promises to make better use of the facility to the entire
community. By allowing the YMCA to use the facility, the Gym will be
staffed by YMCA employees and will therefore reflect the same
hours of operation as the YMCA. When the Contract goes into effect
sometime within the next month, the gym will be open to the public
from 5:30 in the morning until 9:00 pm, as opposed to the 10:00am to
6pm weekday hours for the last two years. For the Tybee Island
YMCA, it is a dream finally come true. To finally have the use of a real
indoor sports facility, will make a big difference in what the YMCA will
be able to offer to it’s members and residents. The YMCA will now
have the opportunity to offer more Youth Sports and Seniors
programs than ever before, and for the first time in a safe, and clean,
climate-controlled environment.
Embracing the concept of a special relationship to better the
community and the lives of its citizens is nothing new to the City of
Tybee or to the YMCA of Coastal Georgia. For it was a very unique
and special relationship between the two from the very beginning that
made it possible for the City of Tybee to have the YMCA come in as
a ready-made recreational department for the city. A deal was struck,
and a contract was drawn up that allowed The City of Tybee to help
supplement the cost of bringing a chapter of the YMCA to a
community as small as Tybee Island. By helping to offset the
expenses of what it would cost to bring in the YMCA as the City’s
Recreation Department, the contract laid out a plan where the City
would help supplement the costs associated with such a venture. By
supplying the YMCA with a building, and providing various
community facilities needed for the many programs the YMCA has
Tybee Breeze
to offer, and sharing in the salary of the Director to run the programs,
the City is able to provide the community everything the YMCA has to
offer for a fraction of the cost. For the YMCA of Coastal Georgia, for
whom without the support of the city, they logistically would never had
been able to justify the cost of coming to a community as small as
ours. While on the other hand, it would have cost the City of Tybee a
fortune to supply the many sports, fitness and childcare programs
that the YMCA has been able to provide to the children, families and
seniors of our community.
To create such a unique and beneficial relationship between both the
City of Tybee and the YMCA was a brilliant move from the very
beginning. Many residents are unaware of how fortunate we are to
have had all of the benefits that the YMCA has provided as the
recreational department for the City of Tybee over the past 9 years. A
cost analysis was made a few years ago that calculated what it would
have cost the city of Tybee to have all the programs that the YMCA
has provided since becoming the City’s rec. department, and the
figure to date would be in the millions. It is a staggering figure when you
take into account how much it would have cost to create and run a
community recreation department, fitness center and all of the
childcare programs available to the residents as members of the
Tybee YMCA. The YMCA combined with the city has provided
invaluable programs such as day care, after school Fun Club,
summer camp programs and the teen center for years. The YMCA
hires all their own staff including instructors needed for the many
fitness programs such as yoga, palates, aerobics, senior aerobics,
water aerobics, personal fitness trainers, boot camp instructor, and is
responsible for providing and training the Coaches for all the seasonal
sports programs and camps for basketball, soccer, gymnastics,
basketball, surfing, volleyball, and baseball, as well hiring the swim
instructor, swim team coach, and childcare workers.
It could be said that the brand new contract between the City and the
Tybee YMCA is a direct result of some concerned citizens on the
Board of Directors of the YMCA who voiced their concerns last year
about what they felt was a decline in the relationship between the City
and the YMCA over the past few years. As members of the Board of
Directors before and after the building of the new gym, they had been
involved with the decisions as to what to do with and where to move
many of the YMCA programs when the hopes of using the new gym
fell through and the Y was no longer able to have use of the old
cafeteria. But being residents of Tybee as well, they were also aware
of the burden that was put upon the city to try to make the new facility
as profitable as possible. And like many other citizens, they remained
patient while the City attempted to turn the new facility into a profitable
venture. All the while, with the City busy trying to offset the expenses of
their new facility by hiring a new Director and staff their new gym, and
possibly creating some new community programs while also

attempting to rent out the space for commercial purposes, the YMCA
was somewhat left out in the cold. The support from the City began to
diminish as well as the facilities that were available for the YMCA to
use.
As the President of the Board of Directors of the Tybee YMCA for the
past three years, this writer must admit that it was disappointing there
for a while to witness what felt like a possible “break-up” looming in the
relationship with the City and the YMCA. Feeling sure that with the
help once again from the YMCA, the cost of the new gym would not
be as extensive to the City and the possibilities for many new and
different family and community programs and events would be
endless. So last summer, a letter of proposal was drawn up by
several members of the YMCA Board of Directors addressing the
concerns they had. They presented a copy of the letter to the City of
Tybee Island and one to the corporate heads of the YMCA of Coastal
Georgia and asked for a meeting with both parties so they could
address the concerns detailed in the letter. The Mayor and City
Manager of Tybee and the Corporate Heads at the YMCA were very
receptive to what the committee had to say and assured the
committee that there was no intentional slight from either party
intended and that the City would continue to meet the needs of the
community with the help of the YMCA. Over the past six months, the
powers that be in both offices have taken another look at what could be
done to improve both situations and the result is a the new and
improved contract between the two parties that was passed by the
City council last month. Together they have come up with a way to
make it happen so that the public would still have full time access to the
facility, but would also allow the YMCA to move their offices into the
new gym, supply the staff and have an area for their programs as
well. The answer came with the advent of adding a Curtain that divides
the Gym into two completely separate sections during the day, one
side for YMCA programs and the other side for anyone who wishes
to come in during the YMCA’s hours of operation and enjoy the
community facility as well. Once again, the City of Tybee and The
YMCA have embraced each other for the good of the whole
community.
So, perhaps the next time you are cruising down Butler Avenue on a
warm sunny afternoon and you feel like playing a little basketball or
simply want to see what the YMCA has to offer that day. Come on in
and enjoy our beautiful new Solomons/Youmans Complex, and be
sure to keep an eye out for lots of new YMCA programs and special
community events in the near future. Oh, and by the way, next time
you run into a city council member or the Mayor, or Diane
Shleischer, or Jan Fox or our new Director of the YMCA, Hillary
Brodofsky, (who was also instrumental in helping to draft the new
contract)… give them a hearty thank you.
It’s often been said that people on
Tybee Island are always looking for
an excuse to have a party…
Well, two local Realtors, Betty Lou Futrell and
Melba Judd of Beachside Realty have come up
with just such an excuse…
The idea is to give the local artists a unique
venue in which to show and sell their art. Betty
Lou and Melba have a beautiful marsh front home
listed at 605B 6th Street. An idea to fill it with
local artwork formed and after brainstorming with
several area artists they decided to call the event
a “““““TTTTTyyyyybee bee bee bee bee HH
House HH
ouse ouse ouse ouse pAR pAR pARTTTTTy”. pAR pAR y”. y”. y”. y”.
At least 6 local artists that rarely show on Tybee
will be filling the home with their original works of
art. Everything from stained glass to sculpture to
paintings and more. Currently scheduled to
attend are: Mary Ingalls with stained glass,
Ralph Douglas Jones with metal sculptures,
Denise Vernon and her paintings, Gale Bolton,
Jane Freyermouth and David Strickland. This
event will give residents and tourists alike a
chance to discover the many talents that the
local artists have to offer and to purchase a piece
of original Tybee art for their own home. Both the
artists and the Realtors plan to make this an
ongoing event. There are so many beautiful
homes on Tybee and it just seems like a perfect
match to showcase Tybee homes and Tybee art
together in one venue.
The next scheduled event will be held on
Saturday, May 5th from 10am—6pm and
Sunday, May 6th from 1pm—3pm. Light
refreshments will be provided throughout both
days.
TYBEE NEEDS YOUR HELP!
Tybee Island needs your help in keeping her
streets, parks and beaches clean, especially
during our upcoming summer tourist season. The
Tybee Beautification Association (TBA) has
kicked off a program called “Adopt a
Neighborhood” where we are encouraging
residents and other lovers of Tybee to “adopt” a
section of street or beach in the area where they
live or enjoy spending time. The goal is to pick up
litter in the “adopted” area two or more times per
month. Participants will be provided with a free
litter pickup tool and free bags. This is an informal
program and participants will not be asked to
report on how often they clean their area and will
not be contacted on a regular basis by TBA.
Picking up cigarette butts is optional. Tybee
Beautification has created a large laminated map of
Tybee and is shading in areas of the island as
people “adopt” sections of streets, the beach,
parks, etc. Please help us shade in the entire map
and take pride in helping to keep our beautiful
island clean and free of litter. To volunteer, please
call 786-0203 and we will deliver a free litter pickup
tool and supply of bags directly to your residence.
pictures after the fact.
Slow Down…
The new speed bumps on North Campbell have
slowed traffic as they are designed to do.
Unfortunately, when slowed traffic turns onto
Meddin Drive, they make up for the lost time by
speeding past “the porch” at break-neck speed.
Some neighbors still travel at a speed where they
can greet us and we can wave at them, the rest
are just a blur.
Kayak Croatia…
Want to kayak the Adriatic Sea? A recent guest of
ours, Tammy, has created a kayak company in
Dubrovnik, Croatia, where you can kayak clear,
blue waters. She was on Tybee for a week to
refresh some of her skills at Sea Kayak Georgia.
Micr ochipping
If just $10 meant the
would you spend
the money?
This past Saturday, pet
owners brought 103 pets to Coastal
Pet Rescue’s low-cost microchipping
clinic at Tybee Island.
“The response was overwhelming,” says
Coastal Pet Rescue president and founder, Lisa
Scarbrough. “This was record-breaking for us. We
were worried we wouldn’t have enough chips.”
Of the 83 dogs and 23 cats microchipped,
only 28 were from Tybee. Pet owners drove from
Midway, Guyton, Bluffton, Hilton Head
Island, Pooler, Springfield, Bloomingdale,
Richmond Hill, Garden City, Collins and
Savannah to take advantage of the lowcost
opportunity.
“Microchipping allows pets to be
reunited instead of needlessly
euthanized for lack of identification when
impounded at animal control facilities,”
Wher Where Wher e Ar Art Ar t is is Fun
Fun
When the Irene Sullivan Gallery opened in March
2003, it was overwhelming clear that the gallery
would be something totally different from anything
on Tybee Island. First of all, the space was
amazingly transformed by the vision that only
Irene could see, but she made it happen. Each
wall was given a different color of paint – red for the
back wall, blue, terra cotta, yellow and pale green
on other walls. The floor itself was a work of art
with a Harlequin-type design in colors of rust/brick/
red and cobalt/electric blue. The stage was set
for fun.
The various local artists continued with the fun
theme, but they couldn’t be more different – both in
their personalities and artistic styles. The ages
vary from the 20’s to the 70’s – budding artists
trying to find their artistic way to artists that have
been painting for decades. Throughout the years,
Irene’s gallery has consistently been about fun art
and the unique artists who make the art.
Tybee Breeze
By Janice Bentley
A relatively newcomer to Irene’s gallery is Joni
Woodcock. Many of the islanders know her from
her work as a bartender currently at the Wind Rose
Café or previously at Scandal’s. Joni also is one of
the most talented singers on the island and often is
heard where karaoke is going on. She was in a
band, Wild Irish Rose, for eight years as the lead
singer. The band played primarily in the Statesboro
and Savannah areas. Although born in Savannah,
she moved to the Statesboro area (the little
country, one-traffic-light town of Clito), and went to

Georgia Southern. She came to Tybee ten years
ago for St. Patrick’s Day and never left!
Joni gives the impression of being strictly a “party
girl” (and can be described as the female version of
Tommy Barlow) with only partying and more
partying on her mind; that couldn’t be further from
the truth. Although Joni has dabbled here and
there, off and on, in artistic endeavors, it
apparently hasn’t ever held her attention for very
long. With the encouragement and support of Irene
Sullivan, Joni is on her way to become a “serious”
artist and started showing her work at the gallery
last year. With the pressure of a show later this
month, Joni may prove to be more serious and
committed to her art than anyone ever thought.
Joni works in acrylics from her studio at her Tybee
Island apartment and confesses that she paints in
bed. There she is comfortable and relaxed, and
can concentrate on her work. She admits that she
has paint on “everything”, but that seems to be
pretty common with artists/painters. Her work is
extremely detailed and controlled – something that
may surprise those people who know Joni’s
outgoing (sometimes wild) personality and
seemingly carefree island lifestyle. However, it
remains fun and usually with a story. She often
surprises with off-the-wall framing techniques to
include rope and frames adorned with found items
(broken pottery and pieces of glass). She has
“experimented” with a unique technique, in which
fabric is attached to the painting. It is difficult to
determine where the fabric starts/ends, and where
the painting starts/ends.
Charissa Murray will
also be featured at the
upcoming show at the
Irene Sullivan Gallery.
Charissa grew up in
Savannah, attended
Savannah Arts
Academy, but
ventured off to Atlanta,
Key West and Chicago
before returning to the
area. Although the
only formal training in art was obtained at the arts
academy, Charissa has been an artistic ‘sponge’
throughout her young life. Her father was involved
in portrait painting in oils, which she watched and
learned. In 2002, her roommate in Chicago was an
art student and she started painting again then - a
result of the “creative energy” there. The birth of
her daughter, Meenah, who will be three in
September somewhat de-railed her art pursuits,
but she has starting painting and has many new
paintings in the works for the show.
In viewing her work, the size of her paintings range
from small (10 x 12) to large (36 x 50) and her style
varies as well – all which show a fun and whimsical
view of her world. She admits that she sees things
in “blocks of color” and paints primarily from stuff
“in my head”. The most impressive piece in her
current body of work is a large oil painting of
Chicago. The color is wonderful and her depictions
of the usual and ordinary in Chicago is totally
delightful and fun, and offers some insight into what
is possible as far as her art is concerned. She
admits that she painted this scene after leaving
Chicago and missing being there, which is
somewhat converse to the usual…..Charissa is
hardly usual.
Charissa is working on six new oil paintings, which
are all on wood frames made by her father. She is
working on paintings of people/figures which is
something she never thought she’d be doing, but
she seems pleased with what she has done thus
far. She is still trying to figure it all out, but would
love to make art her career and be able to support
herself and her daughter. To really see how far
Charissa has come in her art, she painted ceiling
tiles in the Wind Rose Café back in 1995; just look
for her name!
In addition to being a great place to enjoy the sun
and surf, Tybee Island beaches are also important
nesting areas for endangered sea turtles. They
return each year to nest from May 1 to October
31. If you are here during these months, we hope
you will help us protect these magnificent
creatures by remembering a few simple things:
- It is against the law to touch or disturb nesting sea
turtles, hatchlings, or their nests. Sea turtles are
protected by the Endangered Species Act.
- Avoid using flashlights or flash photography while
on the beach at night.
- Turn off outside patio lights and shield indoor lights
from shining directly onto the beach at night. Lights
disturb nesting turtles and hatchlings.
- While enjoying the beautiful beaches during the
day, avoid disturbing marked sea turtle nests.
If you see any turtle activity, please call Heather
partially and bring to a boil reduce heat and simmer 30
seconds. Remove from heat, cover, and let stand for 15
Tybee Breeze
By Bob Markwalter
Mr. Ordiway was
daydreaming about a ham
sandwich. He could see its
thick slices of ham topped
with cheese, tomato, and
mustard. He could taste the
juicy flavors as they melded in his mouth. He felt
the way the tomatoes crunched and the ham
crumbled as he bit into the sandwich.
“Oh, no!” he said.
“Oh, no?” said his wife.
“I forgot the lettuce. You
know how I like lettuce on my
ham sandwiches. I’ll have to go
back and make it again, with the
lettuce. Maybe I’ll have mayo this
time, too.”
“You know what the doctor said about salt
Cinco de Mayo
Ingredients:
2 1/2 oz. white Tequila
1 oz. Grenadine
1 oz. lime juice
Instructions:
Shake all ingredients with lots of ice. Strain over
ice in a rocks glass. Garnish with a lime wedge.
If you’ve gotten bored with all the margaritas
you’ve been drinking then you’ll want to try this
classic Mexican recipe as a great way to drink
Tequila on Cinco de Mayo.
This month’s drink submitted by:
Rob “Turtle” McLellan, former bartender & professional drinker.
and fat, which is mainly what ham is about.”
“I’ll bet the doctor had ham for Easter
dinner.”
“I’ll bet he had tofu.”
“Ooooh!”
“And his arteries thanked him.”
“Well my stomach thanked me.”
“You pay too much attention to your
stomach.”
“All right, I’ll make some bean soup. I’ll
imagine I’m boiling the ham bone, watching it fall
apart as it simmers …”
“Don’t get carried away with the thought.”
Mr. Ordiway felt a sense of foreboding. He
said, “Carried away?”
“Edwin,” said Mrs. Ordiway, “we are not
going to have any more ham.”
Mr. Ordiway looked at her as if she
had lost her mind. He said, “I bought a
fifteen-pounder. I couldn’t have eaten
more than two pounds for dinner,
and you hardly ate any.”
“And my arteries thanked
me.”
“Do you converse often with
them?”
“Not as often as you do with your stomach.”
She had him there. He did like to see that he
was well fed. But then, he had been a poor kid, he
had eaten a lot of hot dogs and meatloaf and
bologna. His family had never had ham for Easter
or Christmas. He had vowed to see that his
children would eat well. Alas, he and Edwina had
not had children, so he decided to see that he
would eat well.
“You’re blaming it on the children again.”
“Yes.”
“We should have adopted.”
“Yes, but I always hoped …”
“That’s in the past, Edwin. I love you, and
you love me.”
“Yes.”
“And you love ham. And the doctor says
ham is bad.”
The foreboding returned.
“So I took what was left of the ham and
gave it to the homeless shelter on Whitworth
Street.”
The foreboding became panic.
“What? You did what? You gave away my
ham?”

“I gave our ham to a charitable organization
which will feed unfortunate people with it.”
Mr. Ordiway’s stomach felt very empty. It
began to churn and gurgle. Mrs. Ordiway looked at
his stomach and sighed. Mr. Ordiway felt his mouth
hanging open. Gave away his ham? She gave
away …
“Genocide!” he said.
“What?”
“Genocide. Ham is bad for me, right? Bad
for my arteries. My arteries curse me when I eat
ham. Well if it’s bad for me, it’s bad for the poor
unfortunate homeless bums that clog our streets!
I’ll call the United Nations. I’ll have sanctions. You
will have to get me another ham!”
“I got you some ham flavored tofu at the
health food store yesterday.”
“Ham flavored …”
“Mr. Broughton assured me it is quite tasty.
He and his family eat it all the time.”
“He and his family are squirrels!”
“Calm down, Edwin. Think of your blood
pressure.”
Edwin thought about his blood pressure. It
was all anyone else could think about, Edwina, the
doctor, his lawyer, his life insurance agent. Even
the garbage men asked about his blood pressure.
He was sick of his blood pressure. But maybe …
“A little ham would bring my blood pressure
down, just at this moment, at least. It would calm
my nerves.”
“So would a drink, but you know what the
doctor says …”
“Dammit it, woman, I need a ham
sandwich!”
“You need a tofu ham sandwich! Go to the
kitchen and make it! Put fat free cheese, tomatoes,
lettuce, and fat free mayo on it! And like it!”
“Alright, but I’ll need a bottle of wine to
choke it down.”
“There is a bottle in the fridge. It’s alcohol
free.”
“I think I’ll go out instead. I’ll be at the
homeless shelter.”
MAY
2007
Taurus (20 April - 20 May)
This month is going to be one of those “trials by fire” type
nightmares that happen every so often. I wish I could give you
more details but then you’d have no good reason to return to
work over the coming weeks, would you? Testing times lay
ahead for you if you expect your love life to be without its ups
and downs. You must expect failure or it will become your
legacy.
Gemini (21 May - 21 June)
Believe everything you read in the coming weeks. Your
gullibility may cause you problems later and gambling is
something that may get the better of you, shortly. Remember,
gambling doesn’t always mean forfeiting money but can also
take the form of running an amber light, crossing the road
when it appears to be safe, and not having medical insurance.
These 3 “gambles” may occur to you, and others around you,
simultaneously.
Cancer (22 June - 22 July)
“Hunky-dory” - a beautiful phrase that will sum up the day,
week and month for you. You see, it’s just going to be tip-top
from here-on-in and the smile on your face is going to bug the
living hell out of everyone. A horoscope writer nearby may
suffer from brain-related, spirit-induced, pains over the
coming months. This may cause the odd horoscope to be
imperfect but tantalizing.
Leo (23 July - 22 August)
The thought of you losing your mind is making you lose your
mind. If you ever get out of that hole, the chances are that
you’re still going to be a neurotic plague of badness. The
accuracy of any horoscope you read this month will be directly
related to the number of bad things you do. Watch out for
sweet, sticky, orange stuff. Possibly marmalade or an orange
Jelly. We’re not quite sure what it is, or what it has to do with
you..but it definitely features, that or beans. Yes, it could be
beans.
Virgo (23 August - 22 September)
If you are at all paranoid about webcams being placed around
your room, your best bet is to hire a small specially trained
monkey from your local gadget shop. They’re small, cuddly
and leave only the smallest traces of their own feces spread in
the corners. Some of them make good pets but will swipe your
eyes out without a moment’s hesitation if you attempt to clean
the feces. In horoscope news, now might not be the best time
to hire a spycam finding monkey.
Libra (23 September - 23 October)
The odds are always on your side this month, so don’t be
afraid to experiment. A trip to the doctor should quell any
anxiety you have about being a pair of curtains, although this
diagnosis may be less than helpful. You may think later this
month that your computer has been hacked by some 12
year old American girl. However, you will soon come to
realize that actually a family pet has chewed through the
cord of your mouse. A special someone will furnish you
with a gift this month. All signs point to it being a single
shoe, possibly a brogue. Partner someone in a dance and
you’ll feel fantastic for at least a week.
Scorpio (24 October - 21 November)
A picture frame will feature highly in your life very soon and
will probably make you feel like you’ve never gotten out of
bed. Indeed, you’ll probably end up going back to bed as
soon as this mishap is done with you. Damaging words
reach your ears after a disagreement over a neighbor’s
pet. Damaging “poo” will be flung back across the garden
fence if the issue is not resolved within the next few weeks.
Sagittarius (22 November - 21 December)
Your ideals are starting to shape the way you’re living, so
congratulations. This month will go well, except for the bits
that don’t. And not only will those bits go badly, but they’ll
go REAL BADLY. Attraction to the wrong kinds of people
will increase over the coming weeks, including (but not
limited to) cartoon characters and clowns.
Capricorn (22 December - 19 January)
A tasty beverage will be coming your way soon -
something to look forward to. The best way to undo your
mistakes is to stand up, take a good look around, and then
shout “Sorry chaps! My life has been one almighty messup
and I’m very much to blame. If you need to give anyone
a good kicking, I’m your person. Please form a queue,
there will be no velvet rope so no pushing. Thank you.” You
will overhear gossip this month about your love life whilst
you are sat on the toilet.
Aquarius (20 January - 18 February)
The pain in your foot will lessen as the pain in your hand
grows. You will start to feel animosity towards forms of
public transport and its workers, simultaneously regretting
having your foot injured in a closing door and punching
the driver. If you lose money this month you can be assured
that the nature of human kindness will mean you’ll never
see it again. Robots tend to have more luck than you at
finding love. This month will see no alteration of that sad
fact, however, it is possible that a robot may fall in love with
you.
Pisces (19 February - 20 March)
Your spine is going to feel a tingling sensation later this
month and you’re not going to be able to attribute it to
anything specific. Naturally your instinct will be to find love
in places where people are either inebriated or are known
to be easy. However, you may find that a library or the foyer
of council offices is also a good place to pick up a new love.
Alice in wonderland, now there was a lady who wasn’t big
on being small. Prepare yourself because your life is set
for the biggest change you’ve seen in a long time. Your
love life is ready to flourish, and all because you bought
that wonderful hat the other day. You did buy it didn’t you?
Aries (21 March - 19 April)
Everything will suddenly sound good to you this month.
This may be due to a love that has just entered your life in
the form of someone floating down a river in a large plastic
swan-type boat. Or it may just be because you’ve won a
serious amount of money and people want to be your
friend. Speaking of which - you do look amazing!
