Gone are the Good ‘Ole Days
Story and Cover Artwork
by Debbie Brady Robinson
Veteran ‘cruisers’ today, twenty
years ago my husband Mark and I
enjoyed our very first travel abroad
the high seas - destination point,
Nassau, Grand Bahamas! The
adventure began on board a
Carnival Cruise line vessel (likely
retired by now) the name of which
escapes my memory. Last January,
along with many wonderful Tybee
friends, we once again set sail on a
Carnival cruise aboard the beautiful
ship “Glory”. Looking back, I recall
experiencing a combination of both
thrill and disappointment during both
of our Carnival cruises!
“The Agony and the Ecstasy” (as
they say), I still remember
experiencing both during that first
cruise in 1986. Our stateroom, a
replica of the “Love Boat”, it was not!
Two twin births hinged on the side of
a wall in a room the size of a closet!
Still a young married couple, Mark
and I stored our luggage on the top
birth and managed to snuggle up
each night on the bottom bunk -
physically impossible today! There
was perhaps one positive,
depending on your point of view, it
was perfect for multi-tasking since
the shower hung directly over the
commode - ugh, the Agony! Twenty
years later, however, our stateroom
was wonderful! Large enough for a
Queen size bed, double closets, and
a bathroom with separate shower,
commode and vanity - down right lavish
in comparison!
Stepping off the ship, and setting our
eyes upon Nassau for the first time in
1986, I managed to overcome the
horrors of our stateroom! The ‘Straw
Market’ was one of our first sights, and
what a sight it was! Manned by
wonderfully talented artists - natives as
dark as ebony clad in jewel colored
garments (a vision to behold), hand
crafting each and every ware. Superbly
designed baskets, hats and bags were
stacked and hung as far as the eye
could see! Color, beautiful color
everywhere. A buzz of chatter and
banter, bargains galore, and the hustle
and bustle of free enterprise was
apparent at every glance! And, we the
tourists just couldn’t get enough of it. The
delight, the ecstasy - a wonder to
behold! I still recall the thrill of having my
photograph taken along with the artist
who hand-made and signed the basket I
selected! Sadly, the island has
changed. It is true that the new addition
to the island, the “Atlantis” gambling
casino, is fun, exciting, and
breathtakingly beautiful in all its splendor
- but the quaint little island village that I
recall, is no more. The straw market has
been replaced by high priced (anywhere
U.S.A, etc…) chain stores. The
bargains, the handcrafting, the native
color is all but gone.
Tybee, too, is at risk of losing its color.
Tybee has enjoyed the luxury of being a
sleepy little fishing village for a very long
time. Part of the island’s charm has
always been its eccentricity, and a live
and let live attitude, ‘but the times, they
are a changing‘. Our little island is no
longer a secret! Tybee has been
discovered, or re-discovered, to be
...Continued Page 4
Tybee Breeze 3
more specific! Prior to the BIG
“H”, category three+ storm
that hit the island in the late
1800’s, Tybee was, much like
Jekyll Island, a play ground
resort for the rich and famous.
The masses had no way to
reach the island until the
railroad was completed in 1887.
The train was the standard
mode of transportation on and
off the island until 1932 when
the motor car made it obsolete,
and the cars have been coming
in droves ever since with
nowhere near enough parking
for them all!
Tybee is entering the end of an
Era. Gone are many of the
wonderful old structures of the
20 th Century”. The Old Tybrisa
Pier and Pavilion burned to the
ground in May of 1967. It took
thirty years, but we finally got
4
Tybee Breeze
our new pavilion! It’s different,
maybe not quite as charming
to those of us who feel a
certain nostalgia toward the
old ‘Grand Dame’, but she’s
stronger and a magnificent
structure! The Old DeSoto,
what a treasure she was in her
hay day. Everyone
possessing any history on the
island has a story about the old
DeSoto Beach Club (just ask
us)! The Amusement Park,
the boardwalk, the Triangle
Drive In, Cobb’s Apartments,
the list goes on and on. The
sad fact, buildings, like people
(discounting those of us in
denial), age. Some can be
saved, like the jewels created
by Jane Coslyck, but some
cannot. Everything and
everyone, eventually, grows
old. Now, I have completely
depressed myself!
The question, what’s next? Capt. Chris’ is gone,
and rumors abound - The Breakfast Club, or Chu‘s
Dept Store? Two wonderful beloved Tybee
traditions owned and operated by families with
deep roots on Tybee. The Chu family, hard working
honorable people dedicated to Tybee, has played a
major part of the development and direction of
Tybee since Mr. T. S. Chu opened the department
store in the 1930’s. The Breakfast Club, owned by
Tybee devotees Jodee and Cheryl Sadowski, has
been in business since the 70’s. What would Tybee
do if the Breakfast Club sold? How long will we still
have Chu’s? Those who stay in operation long
enough deserve to, and inevitably do retire. Would
a buyer continue to operate the Breakfast Club as
a restaurant, or would the property be sold for
construction. What a loss that would be for Tybee!
Unfortunately, the scenario does not look good.
There are currently no incentives for owning and
operating a restaurant or retail business on the
island. There is no inducement to stay - the taxes
and overhead continue to skyrocket! Small
business is being forced off of the island one by
one! Is Tybee’s business district destined for the
homogenized look of the high priced (anywhere,
U.S.A, etc) Nassau?
Growth is inevitable. It’s not just Tybee, it’s
happening everywhere! It’s a problem for coastal
cities, towns and villages around the globe. The
dilemma, ninety percent of the population desires
to live in areas encompassing about ten percent of
the world’s land mass. Moreover, those who can
afford it are willing to pay for the privilege - ‘the law
of supply and demand‘! “The masses come lured
by surf, sand, and laid-back lifestyles. Call it the
Jimmy Buffett syndrome... More than half the
nation’s population now lives in coastal counties,
which amount to only 17 percent of the land in the
lower 48., says, Joel K. Bourne, Jr., author of
“America’s coastlines are in danger of being loved
to death“, published in National Geographic.
Look out, here they come! “The first baby
boomers turned 60 last January, the cutting edge of
what will soon be the wealthiest, healthiest, and
largest group of retirees the nation has ever
seen…some 78 million strong. Imagine a tidal wave
of fit, tanned, sixty-somethings crashing on the
nation’s shores every year“
No, we can’t blow up the Lazaretto Creek Bridge as
some would like, (Diane Hosti Ring, for one) they
are coming! Tybee has always had a sort of “don‘t
mess with my island” attitude. When I was growing
up on the island, there were only about five
hundred residents. I recall some of the island’s
elders disliking the “new folks” moving to the island
and making changes. Sometime during the 1960’s
I remember the new stop sign going up at Second
and 9 th . It was a pretty big deal in those days! As
legend has it, Mr. Solomon (the elder and family
patriarch), ran the newly installed stop sign. When
the young police officer asked Mr. Solomon if he
realized that he had run through the intersection
without stopping, the older gentleman indignantly
responded, “well, I didn’t put the *&@#%@!! thing
there! “ Tybee - colorful, quirky, eccentric,
development or not - may her character never
change!
Tybee Breeze 5
6
By Judy O’Neill
Thanks to all of you who sent me some “You might
be on Tybee if…” ideas. It’s always fun to see how
other people see everyday life on this little spot of
dirt. Let’s throw in a few “remember when” thoughts
too. Consider these:
You might live on Tybee if…
…you’ve ever had at least one non-working boat in
your yard for any length of time.
You might live on Tybee if…
…you’ve ever made a REALLY early trip to the
Breakfast Club in your pajamas.
You might live on Tybee if…
…on your recent zip down Jones Ave. (to avoid
tourist traffic on Butler), you had to navigate around
four bicyclists, three joggers, an out of town “let’s
look arounder” doing 15 mph, two squirrels crossing
the road, somebody who’d been out all night and
was trying to walk home, and a utility truck.
Tybee Breeze
(Question: Weren’t all the jogger/walker/biker folks
supposedly directed to the bike path on Second Ave.
or even Lovell? That would be a whole lot safer.)
You might be a long-time resident of Tybee if …
…you still have to remind yourself every year that
the parking decal goes on the front, not back,
windshield,
…you can wave at people from afar because you
know what they drive,
…somebody in your family has some sort of
alternative vehicle, like a scooter.
You might have been here a long time if…
…you remember when the movie Gator was filmed
at the original Ocean Plaza.
You might have been living or visiting here a long
time if you remember...
...changing clothes in the bath house,
…the Brass Rail (no, not the condos),
…Bill’s Grill (I want a corn dog right now!),
…shopping in the mysterious upstairs of Chu’s
Department Store,
…the Dragon Palace,
…the Veranda,
…Shorty’s Turntable,
…the Ladha Motel,
…Poor Pat’s,
…boat races on the north end,
…climbing the tower on the south end,
…watching the pier burn,
…how long it took to get the NEW pier.
You might have been here a long time if you
remember…
…climbing and playing all over the fort,
…jetties and no dune crossovers,
…counting how many blocks you walked by the
number of jetties you went over,
…the crab-filled pools along the jetties,
…Dirty Dan peddling nuts,
…local youngsters selling bags of boiled peanuts on
the beach,
…Sally Pearce,
…Nickie’s Lounge and the Charbroil,
…Strickland’s Market (and their rotisserie chicken).
Keep those cards and emails coming ya’ll. I’ve gotta
go get a hot dog and find some boiled peanuts. All
this talk about the good ole days makes me hungry.

Dear Fran,
There’s been all this publicity about the new
slogan or motto for Savannah. I’ve come up with a
motto to use in publicity for our island that describes
our outlook on things perfectly. This could attract
people by the zillions. TYBEE ISLAND: WE’RE
EASILY AMUSED BUT RARELY IMPRESSED.
I’m running for Mayor!
The Tybee Brain
Dear Brain,
That motto does pretty well sum us up. We like to
have fun and can do it without a lot of planning, and
we really don’t much care about who’s who or what’s
what or what the rest of the world does or thinks. I
don’t know about the zillions though. But then, who
cares, right?
Thanks!
Fran
Dear Fran,
I’ve been reading the BREEZE. Most of the articles
are about drinking, partying, who visited who or did
what where, and babies. This sounds just like my
small town paper up in Greene County. (Except we
don’t admit that we drink.) It’s nice to know that
small towns share some of the same things no
matter where they are.
Dear Lilly,
That’s true. Makes you feel right at home, doesn’t
No Happy Family and egg rolls for you! How about
Dear Fran,
Will living on Tybee make me go bald? I was looking
the island and there ain’t much hair there.
Dear Vy,
Living on Tybee does not contribute to baldness. It
sometimes contributes to strange behavior, like
guys and some gals shaving their heads. But, that’s
just a fashion statement or a convenience issue.
Quit worrying,
Fran
Dear Readers,
Here is a nice email we at the BREEZE received.
And in answer to the questions…I have never found
a shark’s tooth either. My sources tell me that Kathy
Brown, formerly of Fannie’s, is becoming Captain
Kathy.
Fran
Dear Fran or Editors:
I was recently on your island for “Beach Bum.” It
was not my first time on the island but my first beach
bum weekend. What an absolute blast. I have 2
questions for you however. I always walk your
beach looking for my Tybee treasures (no, not the
live sand dollars). I have never found a shark’s
tooth. I would like to know what kind of dental plan
you have your sharks on, or is it that I just need
glasses? It concerns me. Secondly, where is Kathy
Brown? I know she has retired from bartending but
I missed saying hello this trip. Finally, although I did
not find my shark’s tooth, the treasures I did find are
you local Tybee people and your many kindnesses.
Here’s to wishing all of you a great and prosperous
First of all…thanks to everyone who helped look
for Ma Coota Enn Lee Ones. After being ripped
from the Marine Science Center, she was found in
the Marsh on the Spanish Hammock side. Her
injuries were similar to sea turtles that are hit by
boat propellers…however, this was no accident.
The police are addressing the injury and theft and,
with conviction of the arrested perpetrator, that
reward money that you donated so generously will
be paid to the crime busters. Dave Cahill, local
boat builder, volunteered to make the fiberglass
repairs to Ma Cootah, and she should be back on
tour this month. Thanks, Tybee!
Awesome, gorgeous, the flag of the Turtle Empire
will fly over the Tybee Island sign at the entrance to
our island. This “one world” themed turtle is what
we’re all about folks. Titled “A Turtle all Nations Can
Love” by Sandra Kennedy, it will be positioned so
that visitors can get themselves in the photo with
those hatchlings start popping out of their nests.
Thanks Beachside Colony, Trey Clark and Betty
Summer Time Blues
After such a mild winter I had great expectations
for spring and summer fishing. As it turns out I’ve
been singing the blues. Little or no rain at the right
tide has held up the white shrimp crop. It’s just
been tough to get bait. That’s all behind us now
according to George “the night watchman”
Reinters. Joey’s Bait House at Hogans Marina on
Wilmington Island has shrimp 24/7, and that’s good
news!
Now the fish stories: Make no mistake
we’ve been catching fish. It’s just the cooler at the
end of the day that’s disappointing. We have
caught just about every species of fish on the
Ryan “Damn” Johnson
with a nice red!
Tybee Breeze
inside that we target. Trout, lots of them, just an
inch or so short of 13 inches. Reds, lots of them,
10 to 12 inches just short of the 14 to 23 inch slot
limit. Big Reds out the wazoo! Now that’s a good
problem to have! There is no easier way to turn a
meat fisherman into a sport fisherman than to put
him on 20 or so huge reds back to back and make
them say give.
Flounder, we’ve caught ‘um, Black Drum,
we’ve caught ‘um, Sheepshead, caught ‘um,
Whiting, got ‘um, Spanish, got ‘um, Sharks, you
know it,
Ladyfish, boy have we, Tarpon, nope!
Russ Kill with his 10 lb.
plus, Red.
It’s just hard to fill the box with fish during
this heat. Get out at day
break, fish till 10am, or hold
up until the sun starts to set
for a late afternoon bite, and
I’ll see you in the river.
IFA Redfish Tour
Savannah
The 2006 IFA Redfish tour swings
through town on August 12 th . This is a chance for
the weekend angler to mix it up with the pros.
That’s what makes this one day event so exciting.
A lot of the same teams you’ve seen on TV will be
right here, and you can go head to head against
teams from Ranger, Yamaha and Cabela’s to name
a few.
The IFA Redfish tour is a series of one day
events that consist of 6 divisions, Florida East
Coast, Florida West Coast, Georgia, South
Carolina, Louisiana and Texas. Two angler teams
fish artificial lures for the two heaviest Reds within
the states slot limits. This is a catch and release
tournament. Your fish must be kept and released
alive or strict penalties are accessed. Note: The
Georgia DNR will allow the IFA tournament
anglers to keep two Reds between 14 and 27
inches for the Savannah event.
A low entry fee of $400 per team and a $35
IFA membership makes it affordable for most
novice anglers. IFA guaranteed 100% pay back at
the ramp at every event, including a new Ranger
Banshee boat rigged with 1 40 HP, 4 stroke
Yamaha outboard, Power Pole, Minnkota Trolling
Motor and Humming Bird electronics for 1 st place.
Now that’s a $20,000 plus boat folks!
This year’s host venue
will be Hogans Marina on
Wilmington Island. Pre-fish day
will be August 11 th . Registration
starts at 4pm on the 11 th at
Hogans, followed by a captains
meeting at 7pm. Fishing will begin on Saturday
August 12 th at first safe light from Hogans.
I have found the IFA to be a fun bunch of
folks to fish with; however they take their business
serious. If you plan to fish this tournament you
need to go online to www.redfishtour.com and
check out the rules and regulations. Such things
as late entry fees, safety, fishing tackle, fishing
methods, live wells and insurance will be of
interest.
Even if you don’t fish bring the family to
Hogans on Saturday afternoon around 2p, for the
weigh-in. You are guaranteed to see some huge
Hot Tubs and Pregnancy –
Be Careful of Mixing The Two
If you are pregnant, your back probably hurts, your
ankles may be swollen and you just can’t seem to
get comfortable. Even in the first trimester (your
first twelve weeks), you may feel perfectly fine;
you’re not showing yet and it feels like nothing has
really changed. You’re wearing your normal
clothes and with the exception of some minor
morning sickness, you feel great. Either way, you
feel like relaxing in your hot tub. Sounds like a
good way to settle down from the stresses of the
day, right? Maybe, maybe not. Read on to make
sure you are taking care of both you and your baby
before you get in.
You need to know that it is important to use caution
when using a hot tub for relaxation and pain relief.
Hot tubs can cause hyperthermia, which is an
abnormally high body temperature. Using hot tubs,
jacuzzi tubs or very hot baths during pregnancy
when the water
temperature is too hot
may not be safe. The
water temperature in a
hot or spa tub is usually
too warm and can
overheat you and your
baby.
A body temperature of
101º F and above can
raise concerns during pregnancy. The American
College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists
(ACOG) states that becoming overheated in a hot
tub is not recommended during pregnancy. ACOG
also recommends that pregnant women never let
their core body temperature rise above 102.2º F.
Although the specific degree differs from one
woman to another, there is still a concern related to
hot or spa tub use during pregnancy.
Hot tubs are usually programmed to maintain a
water temperature of 104º F. It takes only 10-20
minutes in a hot tub to raise your body temperature
to 102º F or higher.
A hot bath, which is not uncomfortable or scalding,
is a safer way to relax. In a bath much of your upper
body will remain out of the water, making you less
likely to overheat. Additionally, the water in a bath
begins to cool off, as opposed to a hot tub, further
reducing any risk of overheating.
What can you do to reduce the risk if you choose to
use a hot or spa tub:
Although it is not recommended using hot tubs
during pregnancy, here are some ideas for
reducing any risk:
· Re-program your hot or spa tub to maintain a
lower temperature.
· Limit time in a hot tub to 10 minutes or less.
· Monitor the temperature of the water by dipping a
thermometer in the hot tub.
·Monitor your body temperature to avoid
overheating.
· Pay attention to warning signs such as becoming
uncomfortable or if you stop sweating.
Vitamin Remedies
Magnesium
Why You Need It: Aids in muscle contraction,
nerve transmission, blood pressure regulation,
immune function, and bone formation. Might lower
risk of heart disease and diabetes. Helps control
hypertension, headaches, and preeclampsia
during pregnancy. May need to take separately.
How Much? 400 mg
Look For: Magnesium oxide, carbonate, or
hydroxide.
Food Sources: Low fat milk, peanuts, avocados,
bananas, wheat germ, whole grains, cooked dried
beans and peas, leafy greens and oysters.
Tybee Breeze 13
I’m sure that most of you have heard from
time to time the old saying: Don’t believe
everything you read in the paper and see on
the news. I was reminded of this a few
weeks ago when Tybee lost power for three
and a half hours due to the actions of a local
knucklehead taking on a utility pole just
east of Bull River. One television reporter
from the VOD network (voice of doom)
informed viewers that Tybee eateries were
unable to open and serve the many locals and
tourists who were stuck here during the
outage. This was simply not the case. While
most restaurants were closed, at least one
was not affected by the incident. The
Riptide Grill didn’t
miss a beat. Riptide
owner, “Dean-Dean
The Business
Machine,” was
prepared with a
large generator
which was used to
power the soft
drink compressor,
the sound system,
frozen drink
dispensers, a fan
for the hostess and,
most importantly,
the cash register.
The outdoor kitchen
is fueled by gas so
food was not
affected. By the
14
Tybee Breeze
way, I’m kind of surprised that so many of
you still don’t know where the Riptide is.
Some retail businesses were also open,
handling transactions by hand. I’m talking
about using pencil and paper to calculate
the sales tax! Not very many people know
how to do that these days. We have become
far too dependent on computers and
calculators to do our thinking for us. Case
in point: A recent survey/test of high
school graduates showed that a large
percentage of them did not possess the
skills necessary to figure out how much of a
tip to leave at a restaurant. Sad. Things
sure have changed.
Remember when…
Carjacking was something you did prior to
changing a flat tire?
A home invasion was the result of all the
kids in the neighborhood coming over to
your house because your mom was serving
fresh homemade ice cream?
See you next month.

Tybee Fest announces the start of a new island
tradition we hope to continue each Labor Day
weekend. Tybee Fest will present a Luau
Celebration on Sunday, September 3 rd , from 4:00 –
9:00 pm at Memorial Park (event will be held in Gym
if it rains). The Tybee Luau is free and open to the
public and will feature tropical themed live music,
hula hoop contest, limbo contest, luau food, festive
drinks, and more. As a special cultural and
education feature, there will be a group of
Polynesian dancers, “The Children of Polynesia,”
representing the islands of Samoa, Hawaii, and
Tahiti. The dancers perform annually at the
Savannah Asian Festival and at luaus, parties, and
functions. Their interactive show demonstrates
traditional dances and island culture, and best of all,
they encourage audience participation…hula
anyone? The event promises to be a fun filled
afternoon for the entire family!
Even though the Tybee Luau will take place on
Sunday, we invite all Tybee residents, businesses
and visitors to join in the “Aloha Spirit” all
weekend. We are asking Tybee businesses to
participate by creating their own Luau themed
weekend at their businesses. Some ideas would
be to offer Hawaiian themed food or drink
specials, Hawaiian music, leis, or any other island
themed promotion imaginable. We hope all Tybee
residents, guests, and business employees will
wear Hawaiian themed apparel and participate in
the festivities. We have listed below a few
businesses that will participate in the ALOHA
Spirit all weekend (list valid as of Tybee Breeze
press time, more participation expected).
Aloha?
The Aloha Spirit is a well known reference to the
attitude of friendly acceptance, care, and
hospitality for which the Hawaiian Islands are so
famous. In the Hawaiian language, ALOHA
stands for much more than hello or goodbye or
love. Its deeper meaning is the joyful (oha)
sharing (alo) of life energy (ha) in the present
(alo). The Tybee Luau weekend offers our island
the opportunity to embrace this Hawaiian spirit of
Lifeguards Update
The Lifeguard Division recently
underwent its first review from
Starguard, which is a certified
lifeguard education program, similar
to the American Red Cross. Tybee
Island has a partnership with
Starguard which allows us to
organize and train prospective
lifeguards in an open water
environment. Starguard has a minimum
set of guidelines and requirements with
which we have to comply. However, since there is
currently no specification specifically geared
toward ocean lifeguarding, Tybee is a pilot program
of sorts. We are held to a different set of guidelines
than a pool or water park.
The evaluation consists of an unannounced
onsite inspection from an employee of Starguard.
This inspector is from another area and has no
prior knowledge of the program they are assigned
to inspect. They are looking to determine if the
program meets or exceeds the minimum
requirements, and also to make notes of a
program’s willingness to go that extra mile for
beach safety.
The inspector came down on June 12 and
met with Corporal Heckman, who explained how
our program operated. Afterward, the inspector
observed several lifeguards performing their daily
duties, unaware that they were under observation.
Then the inspector took a tour of our operation,
ending with a direct observation test of the
lifeguards in mock rescue situations. When that
was over, he briefed Corporal Heckman on the final
results of the inspection.
...On the beat
with Tybee Police Chief
Jimmy Price & Major Chris Case
Overall the Tybee Island Lifeguards did
extremely well. Out of a possible five stars, we
received a rating as a Four Star Facility. Lifeguard
Josh Janufka won a Five Star Award of Excellence
for his performance on a mock rescue.
Because of our status as a
beachfront operation, we were not
held to several standards, and the
inspector told us that they will come
up with some new standards
specially suited for us.
Starguard was particularly
impressed with the cooperation and
organization of the several
departments that work together to keep our beach
safe. My thanks and congratulations go out to
Corporal Heckman and his staff for a job well done.
The Results Are In
On the 4th of July weekend, that is. For our
purposes, we considered the weekend as
beginning on Friday, June 30, at the morning shift
change at 7:00 AM, and ending on Wednesday,
July 5, at 7:00 in the morning. And what a weekend
it was.
The traffic figures are:
These are the numbers of cars coming on
to the island and passing Breezy Point. The July 3
figures are not a record, with more than 16,000
Tybee Breeze
cars counted on July 3 in both 2005 and 2004. But
it is impressive for a Tuesday. Starting at the 10:00
hour, over a thousand cars each hour poured into
Tybee, until the 8:00 PM hour. That made it eleven
straight hours with over a thousand cars each
hour—and that’s a new record. The total for the five
days comes to 60,045, and we’re not sure—that
could be a record, too.
For the period, we recorded a total of 353
calls for service, with a total of 226 new case
numbers assigned. A total of 45 custodial arrests
were made and 124 various citations were issued.
We counted 9 traffic wrecks and 20 assorted
medical emergencies. The fireworks event on
Monday the 3rd was the busiest time. That day
alone we made 26 arrests. We even added
another court session in July just for that weekend.
The fireworks were great, but we were glad
when the weekend was over.
Attack of the Killer Vegetables
From case number
2007072503 on July 4,
2006:
“Unknown
person(s) threw
onions, peaches,
tomatoes, and a beer
can at the windshield
of the vehicle causing it
to break in several
places. The vehicle
was parked in the city
parking lot the
evening before. The
items looked as if they had been thrown from a
balcony on Strand Avenue. The building has six
rental units with porches facing the vehicle.”
We don’t make this stuff up. Honest.
How Not to Beat a DUI
On the night of June 12, Senior Officer
Mathews watched as three people climbed into a
convertible with the top down. Two of the persons
sat up on the back of the car with their feet in the
back seat, and the driver peeled away north on
Butler Avenue. Officer Mathews lighted them up
with his radar, and watched them reach 68 miles
per hour while still in the 30 mph zone. He caught
up with the car and pulled them over five or six
blocks away.
The driver had all the clues of an impaired
driver, (he admitted to drinking “one beer”), and
was arrested for DUI. At the station, Officer
Mathews set up the intox machine, and the subject
blew into the tube for the required two tests. They
came back as .169 and .189, more than twice the
legal limit. However, state law requires the two
tests to be closer together in number. (The
suspect probably burped in between the first and
second test, causing the second reading to be
much higher.) Now the rules say that the officer
must wait twenty minutes before retesting, so he
left the suspect with the jailer in the booking room
where the intox is kept.
After the mandatory twenty-minute wait,
Officer Mathews returned to retest the suspect.
But something wasn’t right. The intox machine
was completely dead. No display, no lights,
nothing. He checked it out and discovered that a
fuse socket on the back of the machine, within
easy reach of the suspect and clearly labeled
“Fuse”, no longer contained a fuse. He brought a
fuse from his car and put it into the socket, and the
machine immediately powered up. But the damage
was done. The machine had been tampered with,
and in order to get a legal breath test, it would have
to be recertified by the Georgia State Patrol.
The suspect denied any knowledge of the
missing fuse. He was searched completely, his
pockets emptied and his body patted down, and
the entire room was looked over from top to
bottom. The fuse was gone. The suspect could
not be retested on the intox.
But all was not lost. Officer Mathews
reread the suspect the Implied Consent
agreement, and the suspect agreed to be tested.
The officer, who is a certified EMT, then brought
out a syringe and blood kit, and drew a sample of
the suspect’s blood. Then he applied another
charge to the list containing Speeding 68 in a 30,
Reckless Driving, and DUI (Refusal): Interfering
with Government Property. The new charge was a
felony, and would dramatically increase the bond
amount.
The suspect bonded out and we are
awaiting the return of the blood kit from the Crime
Lab. The Intoxilyzer 5000 has had a slight addition
to its back panel—the fuse socket is no longer
accessible.
So what happened to the fuse? Our best
guess is that the suspect swallowed it. He
probably thought it was a good idea at the time.
Welcome back to Sergeant April Smith,
who took a few months off to give birth to a healthy
baby boy and to be a full-time mom for a while. She
That’s all for this month. See you in September.
Tybee Breeze 21
It’s already the 1 st of August and
with just 20 days until the arrival of
“peak” hurricane season, ARE YOU
READY??? Well if ya aint?? It’s your
own fault.
The Citizen’s Hurricane
Preparedness Program recently
presented by the City of Tybee was a most
informative and interesting event. Representatives
from various organizations that would play a key
role before, during and after a hurricane strike were
set up to pass out information and answer
questions. Paul Yuma of the National Weather
Service gave an interesting presentation on
22
Tybee Breeze
With Nancy Anderson
weather science, the role of the National Weather
Service and storm statistics. Despite the fact that
between 1850 and 2005 only 6 major storms have
come within 50 miles of Tybee Island, we are still
extremely vulnerable. Tybee’s shallow ocean
waters and surrounding creeks and marshes
contribute to a higher surge, as you have been
made aware of, by the recently placed signs
around the island, a category 2
storm would have a predicted surge
of at least 11 ft.
Most folks fear the wind, however
flooding is responsible for more
fatalities and costly damage;
likewise is the eye feared. The
weather systems surrounding the
storm are more damaging than the eye of the
storm; it does not need to be a major storm to
create havoc.
Tropical storm
Allison in June of
2001 produced 35+
inches of rain; 22
fatalities and $5
billion in damages.
The heaviest rains
are in the front of the
storm; tornados to
the west.
Who’s in charge? Clayton Scott of Chatham
County Emergency Management briefed the group
on how the shots are called as far monitoring the
storm, keeping municipalities informed and
advising. The CEMA does not issue an evacuation
order, that is left up to the Mayors of the
municipalities.
IT’S COMING! So what do you do? First of all DO
NOT wait until a storm is threatening to begin
preparedness. You should have your plan in place
for any disaster but definitely prior to the June 1 st
start of the hurricane season. CEMA or the
American Red Cross can provide needed
information to help you in creating your plan.
The plan should include: making all family
members including caregivers aware of potential
dangers; choose an Out-of-Town contact and
make sure all members know the number so that
displaced family members can notify the contact of
their well being and whereabouts; plan and know
escape routes or in the event of tornado go to an
interior room or a closet with no windows; advance
preparation for special needs as well as pets.
Make an emergency kit and store in portable
containers.
You can pick up material at Tybee City Hall, or go
online www.fema.gov and www.redcross.org with
helpful information on preparedness.
When to evacuate?? Evacuate when order is
issued. DO NOT take the wait and see attitude.
Clayton stressed that the sooner the better to
avoid the traffic situation resulting from the
hurricane Floyd evacuation several years ago.
What to take? Your emergency kit, as outlined in
the brochure that you are gonna go out and get
TODAY. Clayton stressed the importance of taking
with you important documents especially original
copies, insurance papers and an inventory of
personal property. Photographing each room and
putting on a disk is a very good way to keep an
inventory. Rubbermaid containers are very
suitable for storing what you are taking, but
remember your vehicle will only hold so many!
Although they did
not take the
p o d i u m ,
representatives
from TIPD, TIFD,
Marine Rescue
Squadron,
Chatham County Health Department, Salvation
Army, Red Cross, Coastal Pet, Ferrell Gas, Ga.
Power were all on
hand, set up in
locations around the
complex. The
representatives
passed out helpful
literature, answered
questions and some had goodies to give away!
Delta Omega Sorority served refreshments.
It was off to
Bird of Paradise plants. It was a great time but both
were glad to be back on Tybee!
Doris Hoppi called to gloat over her recent trip to
the Bahamas aboard her son Dale’s yacht. They
sailed from Riviera Beach, Fla. With rough seas
going but smooth sailing coming back. During the
weeklong trip they docked and visited Freeport.
When asked for photos Doris said they were too
busy keeping a watchful eye on her teenage grand
were having a grand time!
Next month is going to be a really big one!
It is going to be Sonny Dixon Day on Tybee,
according to Steve Lee it is going to be
something special with area officials on hand to
honor Sonny’s work with senior citizens. Mayor
Jason is expected to proclaim August 15 th as
Sonny Dixon Day on Tybee!
All seniors regardless of religious affiliation are
invited to participate in this fun loving ministry.
There is no membership requirement and a lunch
is served at every event. Sometimes it is covered
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOEY!
Mark your calander for the September TAPS
production of “Night of Jan. 16 th ”to be performed
September 8 th and 9 th at 8PM and on the 10 th and
11 th at 7PM, in the Old School Cafeteria. Directed
by Tybee’s Carol Ingham it is a 1930’ courtroom
melodrama with an unusual twist: the jury is
selected from each evening’s audience. Don’t
know the cast but do know that Billy Doniel and
Wanda Vitaglino auditioned.
Our sincerest sympathy goes out to Linda Cox
and her family on the loss of her husband Jay. Jay
was a former State Senator, State Court Judge in
Swainsboro. His post retirement career as an artist
brought him great pleasure. I remember the first
time I met Jay, it was when they were still living in
their oceanfront home. He greeted me with that
beautiful trademark smile that he will be most
remembered for! I was there to pick up a donation
for a St. Michael’s Carnival, Jay took me
downstairs on a tour of his studio. The walls were
lined with works of his art at that time mostly
coastal birds and nature and Tybee Lighthouse. Jay
will also be remembered by many folks for his
volunteer work with the Historical Society at the
Lighthouse and service on several City boards.
Jay did not get out and about in recent years due to
declining health but when I think of him I can still
see beautiful smile!
Reid Schaaf is 5 years old
and was diagnosed with
Cystic Fibrosis. Reid is the
son of Walt & Nikki Schaaf,
grandson of Jim & Becky
Heflin, Walter & Joan
Schaaf, Tony & Jean
Agonosski, and nephew of
Tommy & Erika Barlow.
Cystic Fibrosis is a life-
26
Tybee Breeze
threatening disorder that
causes severe lung damage
and nutritional deficiencies.
There is no cure and
respiratory failure is
the most dangerous
consequence of CF.
The Katie Beckett waiver
program acts as supplemental
insurance so families can care
for severely ill and disabled
children at home. The family
was informed in Atlanta that
they would not be eligible for
this Medicaid program. This
due to new and stricter federal
standards the state is using.
“State blindsided on cuts for kids – AJC
Friday, January 20, 2006
Funding was cut and it’s the state’s fault that
hundreds, perhaps thousands of families, will no
longer receive the government assistance they had
come to rely on for therapy and medical expenses.
The department dropped hundreds of families from
the program for disabled and medically fragile
children after it tightened its eligibility rules in
November 2004 to match the federal government’s
requirements. Under new and stricter federal
standards the state is using, some 1,900 children
no longer qualify for assistance. Upset parents
flooded lawmakers and the governor’s office with
complaints, saying their children were suffering
because they couldn’t afford the therapy and
medication that previously had been covered…”
The most important part of Reid’s daily treatment
regimen is clearing mucus from his lungs. In order
to keep his airways clear, a $16,000 piece of
equipment called The Vest Airway Clearance
System was purchased. This consists of an
inflatable vest connected by tubes to an air-pulse
generator. This generator
rapidly inflates and deflates
the vest, gently compressing
and releasing the chest wall,
creating increased airflow
within the lungs. This process
moves mucus toward the
larger airways where it can be
cleared by coughing. Along
with this vest treatment, Reid
takes five prescription
medications. Of these five, the
two most important ones are
Pulmozyme, a mucus-thinning
drug shown to reduce the
number of lung infections and
improve lung function and
TOBI (tobramycin solution for
inhalation) an aerosolized
antibiotic used to treat lung
infections caused by a
bacteria called Pseudomonas.
These two medications alone cost the family over
$900.00. Insurance covers the other portion which
is $3700.00.
Thank You For Your Help!
Because people with CF
need a team approach for
their complex care and
every three months to
“Whoop — Whoop!” Good thing I stopped
drinking this month—‘cuz the “Po-Po” is out in
full force! So, therefore, I really have nothing
to say! I have had no fun! Okay, well maybe
just a little fun…
God must love stupid people, because he made
so many of them; and they are making people
crazy around the island, especially our
bartenders, and according to our ‘experts,’ it
happens more frequently the 3 days before and
after a full moon. I myself do not suffer from
insanity; I enjoy every minute of it, but you’re
just jealous because the voices only talk
to me. No really, don’t worry about
me; I feel good as long as I take my
little blue pill every 15 minutes labeled
“beautiful feeling.” Out of my mind -
The newest BBQ
place on Tybee,
Keith’s BBQ, fits
in well with the
uniqueness of the
island. John Knopf
elaborates that “Local
barbecue business brings spice to Tybee Island.
Keith Smith, a Tybee native, has found the
perfect balance of speed, quantity and quality
to his island barbeque at an affordable price,
with friendly service, and virtually no delay.
Keith delivers his finely honed recipes through
traditional southern cooking. His patient
smoking technique and secret seasoning
produces some of the finest barbeque in the
greater savannah area (and he would know he is
from UGA in Athens where they are known for
their BBQ) serving spare ribs, smoked chicken
and pulled pork. Keith’s menu also boasts a long
list of homemade sides such as baked beans,
Cole slaw, corn on the cob, potato salad, and
perhaps the most impressive is his Mama’s
Brunswick stew, a recipe that his family has
fine-tuned to perfection and made for over 40
years! Keith’s Island Barbecue is opened seven
days a week: Mon.-Thur. 11am-9pm, Fri. & Sat.
11am-10pm, and Sun. 11am-8pm, with free
delivery offered on the island throughout
business hours. Keith’s Island Barbeque is
proud to be one of the most sanitary dining
establishments on the Island, holding a perfect
100 on their health inspection score!”
Hello everyone,
Another month has passed
and by the time this hits the
news stands I will have 8
months left. Time sure has been going by fast!
This past month, temperatures have starting
getting into the 120’s, and dust/sand storms
appear daily now. There have been days that I
couldn’t see 20 feet in front of me at 12 noon, with
scorpions trying to crawl up my pant leg.
Ask Sarge, he’ll tell ya.
He’ll probably call me a “wimp” for
complaining about it! Well
enough of that, on to this past
month’s happenings.
I recently received a text
message on my cell phone from an
unknown number inviting me to an
invitation only party at the American
Embassy on July 4th. Since I was scheduled to
have the day off, and have never turned down an
invitation to a party, I figured there would be no
harm in responding to the text. Several minutes
later, I was called by an aide advising me that I had
been placed on the party list. I thought to myself,
was there another Rich Wolfer working in Kuwait
that had a real important job? Did they confuse me
with this guy? I didn’t argue, and asked her if I
could take a couple of friends, to which she said,
“Yes.” While en route to the Embassy in the taxi, I
informed my driver (Abdullah), that I had been
invited to a party at the Embassy. The first words
out of his mouth were, “Mr. Richard you will be
drinking alcohol?” as he smiled. I couldn’t believe
my ears! I started to sweat! Was he correct? I
hadn’t tasted an ice cold Budweiser in three
months. I hoped he was right! Abdullah then
reminded me that the American Embassy,
although in Kuwait, was considered to be
American soil. Abdullah sure was right. Needless
to say we had a pretty good time, and as always,
after a few, I was able to force myself onto the
Karaoke stage! (Ed Burnsed and Marty would
have been proud)! I guess you could say that I
was a pretty big hit at the embassy that day, and
just for the record, beware; I have some new
material for when I get back!!
On another note, I’ve made several
good friends since I have been here who have
made my time more enjoyable. A retired Kuwaiti
Air Force Chief, Ahmed Habib, my Shri Lanken taxi
driver, Abdullah, and several others. But the best
and closest friends that I have made since I have
arrived are all former police officers from Kansas
City, MO., Birmingham, AL., and Billings, MT. We
all have come here for different reasons, some for
financial, some overcoming personal hardship,
and some to support our U.S. Military in the Middle
East. I guess you could say I came for all three!
We all have bonded and supported each other, just
like my former compadres at T.I.P.D. did. I sure do
miss “the guys and gals” from the dept., and my
friends that I made on the island, in my three
years there. I hope that everyone remains
safe and has a great summer. Till next
month.
Miss Y’all,
TIMSC Sea
Turtle
Project
Coordinator
Tybee Island, along with the entire Georgia coast, is
having a record year for sea turtle nesting. The
Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR)
has been monitoring the number of nests on Tybee
since 1989. The average over the past 16 years is
5 loggerhead nests per season. As of July 21,
Tybee has 8 nests! This will be the fourth year on
record that Tybee has had 8 or more nests. It is
possible that we will have even more by the time
nesting ends in August.
After reviewing the number of nests at the
end of June, Mark Dodd, Sea Turtle Coordinator for
the Georgia DNR, is expecting a record year for the
entire Georgia coast. With a total of 837 nests half
way through the season, DNR is predicting a total
between 1,400-1,500 nests in 2006, significantly
higher than the 17-year average of 1,002 nests.
The following table shows how many nests each
island had at the end of June.
Island Loggerhead Nests:
Tybee 6, Little Tybee 4, Wassaw 78, Ossabaw 115,
St. Catherines 66, Blackbeard 143, Sapelo 40,
L. St. Simons 39, Sea 46, St. Simons 0, Jekyll 97,
L. Cumberland 16, Cumberland 187, Total 837
Tybee’s first nest hatched on June 17
around 11:30 pm. Two of our sea turtle volunteers,
Cricket Hulsey and Ed Walton were diligently
watching over the nest when an estimated 106
hatchlings emerged. They described the event as
the perfect scenario for the turtles to hatch: the tide
was high, lights were out, and the moon had just
risen over the horizon lighting the way for the turtles
to find the ocean. Good job Tybee on keeping the
lights out for sea turtles!
With 8 or more nests on Tybee, we could
have over 800 hatchlings this year. I challenge
Tybee residents and visitors to adopt and name
each and every one of our loggerhead hatchlings.
Tybee Remembers
Blake Heichelbech
I lost my son on May
30 th , 2006. Blake was
18 years old. I thank
you Tybee for your love, compassion and
strength from that day until the present.
As Isaiah wrote in 40:6, we are merely grass,
and we last no longer than wildflowers.
I am so proud of my son. He was the
most loving person I have ever met. He worked
so hard in college and at his job. He had such
strong plans for his future. God took him early and I
eternally thank Him for the gift of having Blake as my
son.
You were there for me when I needed
strength. It continues to be an overwhelming
experience to accept so much kindness and be the
recipient of so much heart-warming love. You have
touched my heart and I feel so blessed to have you
all in my life.
Many of you remember Blake as a
young teenager playing chess at the laundry mat.
Or, you saw him volunteering at the
Marine Science Center. It was Blake for sure eating
pizza with his musician friends at Huc-A-Poos. He
had been in college for the last 2 years at North
Central State College, (COLLEGE NOW-
Engineering Program) and at Ohio State University.
Friends and islanders took care of all of
the funeral arrangements. It was the most beautiful
vigil service and funeral that I have ever known.
Father Jim Costigan of St. Michael’s is a true man of
God. He touched every person there, especially
me. Youth Pastor Joe Strange reached out to the
teenagers and young adults.
Everyone made sure that it was the
perfect final resting for Blake. His flowers were
arranged with bold tye-dyed colors featuring daisies
for innocence and butterflies for angels. His clothes
were bought with his favorite music band logo. His
rosary was placed in his hand. A friend even made
him a hippie necklace to wear. There were donated
guitar picks and an old Donovan album. Some of
Blake’s favorite music was played in the
background. In a fitting touch, the funeral directors
placed his guitar in his casket.
I thank you Tybee for providing the
Pavilion behind the YMCA for BLAKE’S
GATHERING after the funeral. The generous food,
flowers, gifts, the beautiful picture collages, the
signing of Blake’s guitar case, all, to me were so
precious. I am sure that Blake was looking down
from heaven, smiling.
Special thanks to KURTIS SCHUMM
and his brother, Kody, for coming to BLAKE’S
GATHERING to play music and honor my son by
performing for his audience of loved ones.
Previously, Kurtis had plans to meet with Blake to
play guitar. Since that did not happen, Kurtis and his
family came to the GATHERING. That was such
an amazing gift and I will always be grateful.
Tybee cares. Bless you. Bless all of you
that cared for me in June and since then.
Everyday, you hold my hand, hug me or
smile. Tybee provides me with work and gives me
a wonderful place to live my life.
Thank you, Tybee.
God Bless You.
Heat Stress
Heat Stress is likely to affect people
everywhere during our hot summer months.
Although beautiful Tybee Island has its wonderful
ocean breezes and we are so lucky to be here, we
are in the hot zone and the effects of the heat can
lead to life-threatening illnesses such as heat
stroke. Heat stress can be caused not only by
temperature but also humidity, air movement,
clothing and physical activity. High temperatures
cause increased blood flow to the skin, which allows
release of heat. Blood is diverted to the muscles
during physical activity, resulting in a lower release
of heat through the skin. Heat stress causes
increased sweating, and depleting the body’s fluids.
Other signs of heat stress include tiredness,
irritability, inattention and muscular cramps.
People who are medically unfit, on certain
medications, are overweight, suffer from heart
disease or abuse alcohol are at a greater risk for
heat stress. Some are less heat tolerant than
others.
You can avoid heat stress by reducing fluid
loss (drink more water, juices, and non-alcoholic
drinks). Drinking 6-8 oz. of water at frequent
intervals will be enough to reduce fluid loss in
sweating. Have rest pauses in a cool place.
Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Use sunscreens
liberally. Wear light colored protective clothing. If
you suspect heat stress, rest in the coolest place
available, drink cool but not cold fluids and contact a
doctor if you don’t improve rapidly.
Salt tablets are not recommended. Usually
sufficient salt is absorbed from food. However, in
cases of extreme sweating, extra salt may be added
to food.
There are
different degrees of
heat stress leading
up to heat stroke,
which can be fatal.
My 45 year old
brother almost died
after suffering a
heat stroke from
running in August of last year during the final phase
of his preparation for a black belt in kick boxing. His
body temperature reached 108 degrees and he was
in a coma. He miraculously recovered and admitted
to me that he was so anxious to complete his run
that he forgot to drink enough liquids. Heat stroke
is, thankfully, less common than heat stress. A
person will stop sweating, body temps will be high,
skin will be hot and dry and confusion and loss of
consciousness may occur.
The person should be treated by a doctor
until medical help is available, cool the. person down
as quickly as possible, such as by soaking the
victim’s clothing in cold water, giving cool fluids if the
person is conscious, and increasing air movement
by fanning.
A view from the porch of the Lighthouse Inn – Yes there is life on
the North end of the Island and we will try to let everyone know
what is happening with this end of the island from “the porch”
and from our wonderful guests.
Big June... Wow – the island was packed in June
and we were too. We, like everyone else in the
hospitality business, were at maximum occupancy.
Each year it appears that more people are
discovering Tybee and all it has to offer.
Harley Bride... Leo and Kevvi arrived on their
Harley from Atlanta after an extended road-trip
through Florida. They were married the next day at
sunrise on the beach. They were wonderful and
enjoyed the island and the beach for their entire
stay.
Email from Canada... Adam Freeman, Program
Director for Star96 FM, Ontario, Canada, sent us a
message that he was sorry about the death of our
friend Kitty. He was a guest here and had met her
on “the porch” two years ago and has subscribed to
“The Breeze” since then to keep up with what was
happening on Tybee. He will be back this year for
his Tybee-fix.
Comments:
Where do we start? We enjoyed ourselves
immensely. I believe there is a reason why we
ended up on Tybee Island and the Lighthouse Inn.
We felt like it was our home away from home and
exactly what the doctor ordered. We enjoyed our
afternoons on “the porch” and meeting the locals
like Mayor Jason, his wife Jody and Maria Rose,
Suni and John Weathers and of course hearing
Stuart greet all the people passing with “afternoon.”
These made our trip unforgettable. Leaving our
stressful moments back in Chicago, I will think
back to our restful and relaxing days on Tybee. We
learned about Susie’s accomplishments with
FOTT (Friends of the Tybee Theater) and learned of
a new organization, of which we are members –
“LGE” – Longest Guests Ever. We hope we didn’t
overstay our welcome. Thanks for your hospitality
and we feel you are part of our extended family.
We truly will miss you both, the cats, Boomer and
The Biscuits.
Love, Ellian and Ilya,
Glenview, IL (Formerly U.S.S.R)
It is with deep regret that we return our keys to the
Lighthouse Inn. You have mastered the art of
turning a short contact into a feeling of warmth and
friendship. We could not have chosen a more
perfect setting for our wedding than that provided
by the comfort of your inn and the tranquility of
Tybee Island. Great companionship – Great food –
Great house.
Thank you,
Leo and Kevvi, Atlanta, GA
I have been coming to Tybee all of my life.
Tybee itself is a treasure, but your Bed & Breakfast
has given me a new set of memories to treasure. It
was wonderful. Thank you for sharing your
delicious breakfasts and super comfortable beds.
Ken and Robin,
Greenwood, SC
We have also become members of the
“LGE” club. As you can probably tell we absolutely
loved our stay. Thank you very much for the lovely
breakfasts, the wine on “the porch”, the (many)
beers, but most of all your warmth and hospitality.
Tybee Breeze
By Bob Markwalter
“Are we there yet?”
“Moron.”
“Clarissa!”
“Everybody shut
up.”
The Mortons were on the
road to Florida. They were in South Georgia
several miles north of an overturned tractortrailer
that had turned the Interstate into a
parking lot. Billy, a first grader, was looking
forward to meeting Mickey Mouse. Clarissa,
his 15-year-old sister, was mortified at the
thought of being seen with Mickey and made
no secret of her eagerness to reach Cocoa
Beach, where young males rode surfboards.
Their mother, Connie, regretted having
given birth. She had spent most of the trip
reminding Clarissa to talk nicely to her brother
and telling little Billy no, they were not there
yet.
Jim Morton had watched the
temperature gauge in the car’s dashboard inch
up ever steadily with each passing mile, as did
his credit card debt. He alternated these
pursuits with telling everyone to shut up.
“Are we there yet?”
“Moron.”
“Clarissa!”
“Everybody shut up.”
Clarissa reminded her parents often
that they had not taken her to see Minnie when
she was Billy’s age. Connie smiled wistfully
when she remembered Clarissa at Billy’s age.
She had been such a sweet little girl, always
hugging and kissing. Connie paled, banished
the thought of the hugging and kissing her
daughter might be doing now, and looked
down the Interstate through the waves of hot
air above the car tops.
Billy smiled at Clarissa, who stuck out
her tongue. Jim saw this in the rear view mirror,
ignored it, and turned the car key to check the
temperature gauge. It had not gone down, even
though the engine had been off for nearly an
hour.
“Are we there yet?”
“Moron.”
“Clarissa!”
“Everybody shut
up.”
The sun beat
down. His last answer
to the question, “Why
can’t we have the air
conditioner on?
Everybody else does,”
had put a stop to the
question. He would not
really have done that to
anyone, let alone to one of his own
children…then again.
Connie knew he would not
have done it, but she admitted to
herself that she had considered it.
Billy could be persistent and
Clarissa…difficult. Difficult was a
good word for a 15-year-old girl. It
saved you thinking of the nastier ways
to describe things. When had she turned on
them? It was early, by the time she was 11,
maybe even 10.
Clarissa hated her parents. They should
not have been surprised at this turn of events,
because Clarissa hated nearly everything not
connected with boys, fashion, and giggling.
She had perfected the eye roll and hair flip, had
her drive-Daddy-crazy hip wiggle nearly in top
form, and put a cell phone to her ear when her
parents entered a room whether she was
actually talking to someone or not.
Billy was eager to see Mickey. He was
especially eager to see Mickey’s fingers
because they were so big. He was going to ask
Mickey about them. And now this. Mom had
said someone in a big truck had an accident. It
never took that long to clean up Billy’s
accidents, except for the time he had put the
cat in the microwave. They still had not
replaced Fluffy and he was beginning to think
they might not, or not until he was older.
“Are we there yet?”
“Moron.”
“Clarissa!”
“Everybody shut up.”
Jim closed his eyes and imagined
Cocoa Beach. Beautiful girls were sunning
themselves and he was watching them
from under the brim of his big hat. One of
the girls got up and walked over to him.
Jim’s eyes snapped open. He glanced
at Connie, who was staring at the traffic.
Jim closed his eyes. The beautiful girls
were gone. They had been replaced by several
boys, about 18 years old, carrying surfboards.
The boys were talking to a girl who wore an
exceptionally revealing bikini. She
occasionally wiggled her hips in a familiar …
Jim looked into the rear view mirror.
Clarissa was sticking out her
tongue. Had she frozen in that
pose? His reminders that she
might always brought a worldclass
eye roll.
Traffic began to inch
forward. Jim decided the
radiator was out of his hands,
started the car, said a silent
prayer, and began to move. He
smiled and said, “Let’s do it
backwards. Everybody shut
up.”
Connie laughed and
said, “Clarissa!”
Never one to pass a
real opportunity, Clarissa said,
“Moron.”
They waited, but Billy
was silent. Connie looked to
find that he was asleep. He
was so precious like that.
Jim glanced over his
shoulder. Traffic halted. Jim did
not.
The air bags did not deploy but the
radiator gave up and gushed steam that
billowed from under the hood. Horns honked.
Drivers inched by, detailing Jim’s ancestry.
Connie sobbed. In the mirror, Jim saw an eye
roll that topped anything to date.
“Are we there yet?”
AUGUST
2006
Leo (July 23 - August 22)
The way you feel this month is not necessary
limited to what you eat and drink. You may also
want to go for walks and conduct yourself
properly at the table.
Virgo (August 23 - September 22)
Prepare yourself because your life is set for
the biggest change you’ve seen in a long time.
Your love life is ready to flourish, and all
because you bought that wonderful hat the
other day.
Libra (September 23 - October 22)
Ignoring your personal hygiene is a forfeit that
you really shouldn’t have made. Did you
happen to see a film called “Creepy Creatures
of The Night”? It wasn’t a good film. This month
is your own personal “Creepy Creatures of
The Night”. Oil and water are to you what Fish
and Gin are to a drunken fisherman.
Scorpio (October 23 - November 21)
Paper can cut, and words can hurt. Which is
why you should burn any mail that comes
through the letterbox - preferably whilst still in
the postman/woman’s hands. Chocolate
desserts are your friend this month. The
legend of the baked bean may trouble you as
last night’s meal tries to catch up with last
week’s.
Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)
Everything you feel about yourself will be
confirmed this month as you’re put through the
mill and emerge victorious. You’re single. So
what are you doing reading this when you
could be out there having fun? Go let your hair
down.
Tybee Breeze
Capricorn (December 22 - January 20)
You need to stop accepting responsibility for
your own life. Everything is actually the fault of
that darned liberal media, you know. You’d be
nearly perfect, or at least much thinner, if it
wasn’t for them.
Aquarius (January 21 - February 18)
“Headlice!” is not something to be screamed in
terror at the local bus stop. Your bed is made,
lie in it. Fall asleep for a while. Spoon the
pillows. Yes, that’s it. Relax.
Pisces (February 19 - March 20)
Time to look for a new job. You should be able
to find work as a surgical assistant. And stop
worrying so much! Everyone else lies about
their background, too.
Aries (March 21 - April 19)
Someone you don’t like will make repeated
attempts to talk to you this month. The best way
to handle this is to stuff extremely crunchy food
in your mouth during each attempt, and then
mumble “What?” while looking at something
slightly over their left shoulder.
Taurus (April 20 - May 20)
I would estimate that at least 50% of your
efforts this month will go, not only unrewarded,
but also unnoticed. Life is like that this month
and just when you start to get used to it you’ll
suddenly receive a big pick-me-up.
Gemini (May 21 - June 20)
You are finally ready to face the world as
yourself this month, so don’t be afraid of
anything. Be wary of emails claiming to be from
PayPal or eBay - they are almost certainly your
“most like a junky” friends trying to get a rise out
of you.
Cancer (June 21 - July 22)
Love is a wonderful thing that can truly change
your life for the better. However, the chances of
this happening to you anytime soon are so
remote that you might as well quit pretending
that you’re well liked, go home and eat icecream
until your brain freezes.
