Summer Time Blues
After such a mild winter I had great expectations
for spring and summer fishing. As it turns out I’ve
been singing the blues. Little or no rain at the right
tide has held up the white shrimp crop. It’s just
been tough to get bait. That’s all behind us now
according to George “the night watchman”
Reinters. Joey’s Bait House at Hogans Marina on
Wilmington Island has shrimp 24/7, and that’s good
news!
Now the fish stories: Make no mistake
we’ve been catching fish. It’s just the cooler at the
end of the day that’s disappointing. We have
caught just about every species of fish on the

with a nice red!
Tybee Breeze
inside that we target. Trout, lots of them, just an
inch or so short of 13 inches. Reds, lots of them,
10 to 12 inches just short of the 14 to 23 inch slot
limit. Big Reds out the wazoo! Now that’s a good
problem to have! There is no easier way to turn a
meat fisherman into a sport fisherman than to put
him on 20 or so huge reds back to back and make
them say give.
Flounder, we’ve caught ‘um, Black Drum,
we’ve caught ‘um, Sheepshead, caught ‘um,
Whiting, got ‘um, Spanish, got ‘um, Sharks, you
know it,
Ladyfish, boy have we, Tarpon, nope!

plus, Red.
It’s just hard to fill the box with fish during
this heat. Get out at day
break, fish till 10am, or hold
up until the sun starts to set
for a late afternoon bite, and
I’ll see you in the river.
