more specific! Prior to the BIG
“H”, category three+ storm
that hit the island in the late
1800’s, Tybee was, much like
Jekyll Island, a play ground
resort for the rich and famous.
The masses had no way to
reach the island until the
railroad was completed in 1887.
The train was the standard
mode of transportation on and
off the island until 1932 when
the motor car made it obsolete,
and the cars have been coming
in droves ever since with
nowhere near enough parking
for them all!
Tybee is entering the end of an
Era. Gone are many of the
wonderful old structures of the
20 th Century”. The Old Tybrisa
Pier and Pavilion burned to the
ground in May of 1967. It took
thirty years, but we finally got
4
Tybee Breeze
our new pavilion! It’s different,
maybe not quite as charming
to those of us who feel a
certain nostalgia toward the
old ‘Grand Dame’, but she’s
stronger and a magnificent
structure! The Old DeSoto,
what a treasure she was in her
hay day. Everyone
possessing any history on the
island has a story about the old
DeSoto Beach Club (just ask
us)! The Amusement Park,
the boardwalk, the Triangle
Drive In, Cobb’s Apartments,
the list goes on and on. The
sad fact, buildings, like people
(discounting those of us in
denial), age. Some can be
saved, like the jewels created
by Jane Coslyck, but some
cannot. Everything and
everyone, eventually, grows
old. Now, I have completely
depressed myself!
