Q4. What are the mechanisms put in place to ensure the community owns the project? The starting point towards achieving this is the element of participation. The project design begs much of it success with the active participation of the public as means of them owning and determining the success of the project. The stakeholder workshop that we are holding today was an open invitation one through our local media to ensure that all participate unlike closed invitation meetings. As we proceed you will also appreciate the role that community is expected to play for you shall develop a monitoring plan. Q5. How would it be ensured that the most vulnerable groups such as the orphans and the child headed households adopt the cook stoves owing to its cost? This can take a two way approach. As mentioned earlier we are starting with a pilot phase that shall cover a limited geographic area and only 1500 cook stoves will be constructed. The purpose of this pilot phase is to help us develop a solid lesson base to inform our operation for the next 7 years. In this phase we anticipate to roll out more of ‘affirmative’ action models to cater for such groups and keenly monitor how well that works. Secondly we shall greatly depend on the partnership that shall be developed between community, administration and other community serving groups to generate the list of such families and jointly discuss on how they can be supported. It is however important to note that we don’t anticipate to offer free cook stoves, that is why we have integrated the loaning and saving elements to this projects to avail cook stoves to desiring community members on flexible terms. Q6. Will the integration of the group saving and loaning also include the people living with HIV/AIDS in the support groups? At the moment we have not developed a specific program to address this. The projects stands to offer its benefits to all members of community without discrimination on gender or HIV/AIDS status, we hope to work well with support groups in ensuring that their members all benefit. The idea of considering support groups as some of the loaning groups that is possible once we get into that phase. Q7. What is the statistics on the targeted households? In the pilot phase we target to 1500 households, then starting next year we want to target 7200 households per year for seven years. Blind sustainable development exercise The participants were taken through the sustainable development indicators by a facilitator. The session aimed at enhancing their understanding on the selected sustainable development indicators as provided for by the gold standard tool kits. The mode of presentation was by use of charts and group discussion. The participants were taken through the blind sustainable development matrix, and then groups were formed. The groups were to discuss the indicators, score them and discuss mitigation measures depending on score. After the group works the participants presented their findings in a plenary session. The views were consolidated to make their matrix. Discussion on monitoring sustainable development The participants were taken through the project details to help them develop a monitoring plan. The method of presentation included charts and plenary. The stakeholders developed a framework for monitoring the project. We anticipate learning during the pilot phase how well we can incorporate this families into savings and loaning programme that will help them acquire the efficient cook stoves. Yes Climate change is caused by two processes, natural processes and man-made processes. Over time it has been observed that climate change is happening at faster rate than before. The concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has increased with time. The gases are attributed to increased fossil fuel use, deforestation, land use changes and other activities. Various bodies like the intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) and other research bodies have concluded that reducing greenhouse gas emissions holds the key to slowing the rate of climate change.
