The first modern sugar
refinery in China
BMA will supply the key equipment for the sugar
house of the first modern sugar refinery in China.
BMA has held its own against severe international
competition and has secured the order for the
following machinery and equipment:
Evaporators
Batch-type pans
Batch-type centrifugals
Continuous centrifugals
Drum dryer
Fluidized-bed cooler
Various other items of equipment and services
The refinery will have a capacity of 1,500 tons of
raw sugar/day, and it will produce refined sugar
that meets international quality standards.
Some of the equipment, such as the centrifugals,
will be supplied by BMA alone. The supply
of items that would prove rather difficult to ship
to China, because of their dimensions, has been
split up. Components that play a critical role for
plant operation will come from Germany, whereas
bulky components, in particular, will be manufactured
locally. Minor plant items will be supplied
entirely by local manufacturers on the basis of
BMA’s specifications. This procedure, which has
proven successful in a number of previous orders,
is a good compromise between technological
requirements and cost efficiency.
Criteria that made the customer decide in
favour of BMA include BMA’s vast experience
with projects of this kind and a long list of references,
and above all the quality and performance
of its equipment. BMA’s batch-type vacuum
pans, for instance, have stainless-steel calandrias
in which the tubes are welded in place. Distinctive
features are a maximum of heating surface
and also a maximum of useful volume. This, in
conjunction with a perfectly adjusted stirrer, provides
for the production of a very homogeneous
massecuite of a high dry matter content.

The evaporators are falling-film evaporators of
the successful and reliable “Beta” type. Thanks
to their high k-values, the heating steam can be
utilized in an optimum manner.
BMA not only supplies various items of equipment,
but has also been put in charge of the
basic and part of the detailed engineering (see
BMA Information 42/2004). Altogether this is an
excellent basis for a modern refinery concept,
promising high yields and efficient use of energy
and process materials.
