Letters charged at half the rate<br />
<strong>of</strong> Packet Postage.<br />
Ship Letters are forwarded through the London Post Office, to the<br />
Cape <strong>of</strong> Good Hope, Isle <strong>of</strong> France, Bombay, Ceylon, Madras,<br />
- Bengal, Bencoolen, Prince <strong>of</strong> Wales Island, on paying the inland<br />
postage to the port where the ship may be, and Twopence sea<br />
postage additional, for every letter under three ounces weight,<br />
and One Shilling per ounce, for every ounce above that weight.<br />
But Ship Letters yVoOT the Cape <strong>of</strong> Good Hope, and places before-mentioned,<br />
are liable to the full inland rates, and a sea postage<br />
<strong>of</strong> Fourpence for every letter under three ounces v/eight, and<br />
One Shilling jjer ounce, for every ounce above that weight.<br />
All letters from other places abroad are liable to a sea postage <strong>of</strong><br />
Eightpence single, and One Shilling and Fourpence for double<br />
letters, and so on, over and above all inland rates whatever.<br />
Newspapers and Prices Current that have paid stamp duty, if<br />
made up open at the ends, and Letters containing patterns, provided<br />
ho writing is contained in the letter except the prices <strong>of</strong> the<br />
patterns, and the address <strong>of</strong> the sender, are forwarded througti<br />
the Post Office, at One Penny per ounce. But Letters, Newspapers,<br />
Prices Current, &c. to the Coast <strong>of</strong> Africa, St. Helena,<br />
Batavia, New South Wales, Surinam, Havanna, Hayti, Honduras,<br />
and all places where there are no packets, are charged one-half<br />
<strong>of</strong> the highest rate <strong>of</strong> postage.—Seamen and Soldiers can send<br />
and receive single Letters, (on their own private concerns only,)<br />
to and from any part <strong>of</strong> His Majesty's dominions, where there are<br />
regular Mails, on paying One Fenny at the time <strong>of</strong> ingiving. Letters<br />
from a Seaman or Soldier must be signed on the back by the<br />
Officer in command <strong>of</strong> the Ship, Regiment or Corps to which he<br />
belongs, specifying the class <strong>of</strong> the person, as the case may be.<br />

Surgeon—Thomas Ferguson and James Burns, Surveyors.<br />
This Establishment has 3 Constables— 18 Ward Officers—<br />
House Officers—6 Criminal Officers— 12 Patrolemen—James<br />
Black, Superintendent <strong>of</strong> Fire Engines—Farquhar M'Donald, Superintendent<br />
<strong>of</strong> City Lamps— 15 Lamp Lighters— 100 Watchmen<br />
and 20 Scavengers (doubled in winter) and Superintendent.
