Understanding the Vessel: Structure and Fabric Original Construction Cutty Sark Conservation Plan vol.3: Significance Cutty Sark is classed as an extreme clipper — a fast sailing ship with exceptionally fine hull lines. She is of composite construction — i.e. wooden planks attached to iron framework with diagonal tie plates let into the planking, with an iron box keelson. The planks were sheathed below the waterline with yellow metal to prevent fouling. The advantages of composite construction were that the iron frames took up less space than wooden frames (increasing cargo capacity) and anti-fouling treatments for iron-plated hulls at the time were inadequate. Of 65 clippers built between 1853 and 1870, 33 were wooden, 27 composite and 5 iron. Two other composite construction vessels survive in the UK — City of Adelaide (1864), an emigrant ship now lying at Irvine and the gunboat HMS Gannet (1878), at Chatham. She was built under ‘Special Survey’ which meant regular inspections by Surveyors of Lloyd’s Register during construction and she was assigned the highest classification for her hull and equipment, i.e. 16A1, meaning that she should be subject to a special survey after 16 years. 25 of 107
