be capable <strong>of</strong> supplying tbe wants <strong>of</strong> twenty-five thousand<br />
people. Ano<strong>the</strong>r set <strong>of</strong> waterworks is being constructed for<br />
<strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> supplying <strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> Klang and <strong>the</strong><br />
harbour at Port Swettenham.<br />
Railways. There are 97 miles <strong>of</strong> open railway line, and 29 miles<br />
under construction. The open system connects with Perak<br />
at Tanjong Malim on <strong>the</strong> Bernam Piver, and passing southwards<br />
through Kuala Lumpur, terminates at present at<br />
Kajang, whence 29 miles <strong>of</strong> extension are now being constructed<br />
to Seremban, <strong>the</strong> capital town <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Negri Sembilan.<br />
A branch line 27 miles in length connects Kuala Lumpur<br />
with Port Swettenham.<br />
The depot and goods sheds at Kuala Lumpur are large<br />
and commodious, and are lighted throughout with electrie<br />
light.<br />
Education. Selangor possesses 41 vernacular schools and five English<br />
schools, <strong>the</strong> chief <strong>of</strong> which is <strong>the</strong> Victoria Institution at Kuala<br />
Lumpur with a daily attendance <strong>of</strong> 400 boys. The Institu-<br />
tion, possessing a staff <strong>of</strong> qualified English Masters, <strong>of</strong>fers<br />
every opportunity for acquiring a sound commercial education.<br />
It is supported by an annual Grovernment Grant and a<br />
contribution from <strong>the</strong> rates.<br />
There are two English girls' schools in Kuala Lumpur<br />
founded by <strong>the</strong> enterprise <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Roman Catholic and<br />
Methodist Missions. No charge is made at <strong>the</strong> Vernacular<br />
Schools, but attendance is compulsory for any boy living<br />
within two miles. At <strong>the</strong> English Schools a small monthly<br />
fee is charged.<br />
A Settlement exclusively for <strong>Malay</strong>s has been started in<br />
Kuala Lumpur, with <strong>the</strong> object <strong>of</strong> collecting in one place an<br />
exclusively <strong>Malay</strong> population and to provide technical education<br />
in wood-carving, silver work, weaving, tailoring and<br />
agriculture.<br />
There are now about 50 families, to each <strong>of</strong> which a free<br />
grant <strong>of</strong> half an acre has been given, but no o<strong>the</strong>r assistance.<br />
The Settlement has a large recreation ground, a mosque,<br />
houses for <strong>the</strong> technical education classes and a boarding<br />
house for <strong>Malay</strong> boys attending <strong>the</strong> Victoria Institution.<br />
Vernacular Schools for boys and girls are in course <strong>of</strong><br />
construction within <strong>the</strong> grounds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Settlement.
