<strong>the</strong> plains. Upon <strong>the</strong> range <strong>of</strong> mountains which overlooks<br />

Taiping <strong>the</strong>re are situated two bungalows known as "Maxwell's<br />

Hill " and " The Tea Grardens," at approximate elevations <strong>of</strong><br />

4,000 feet and 3,000 feet respectively. These buildings are<br />

<strong>the</strong> property <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Grovernment and are maintained for <strong>the</strong><br />

accommodation <strong>of</strong> Europeans for prescribed periods at<br />

reasonable charges. Accommodation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same description<br />

is provided for <strong>the</strong> community <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

State upon Grunong Kledang, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> range <strong>of</strong> hills which<br />

divides <strong>the</strong> valleys <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Perak and Kinta rivers. These<br />

Sanitaria are all approached by good bridle paths, constructed<br />

at convenient gradients and very efficiently upkept, which<br />

permit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> riding horses, or <strong>of</strong> chairs carried<br />

by coolies for <strong>the</strong> benefit <strong>of</strong> those for whom active exercise is<br />

undesirable. In addition to <strong>the</strong> above-mentioned buildings,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Resident-Greneral and <strong>the</strong> British Resident <strong>of</strong> Perak have<br />

private bungalows provided for <strong>the</strong>ir use by Grovernment,<br />

upon <strong>the</strong> Taiping Hills, but <strong>the</strong>se are, <strong>of</strong> course, not available<br />

for o<strong>the</strong>r persons.<br />

The conservancy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> towns and villages in <strong>the</strong> State is Conservancy.<br />

entrusted to Sanitary Boards, <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> which are<br />

nominated by <strong>the</strong> Grovernment. A certain number are<br />

Grovernment <strong>of</strong>ficers, and <strong>the</strong> remainder are selected from<br />

among <strong>the</strong> principal members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> European and native<br />

communities.<br />

The prisons <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State are constructed upon <strong>the</strong> most Prisons.<br />

modern lines, with separate cell accommodation for a large<br />

number <strong>of</strong> convicts, and are administered in accordance with<br />

<strong>the</strong> most efficient rules <strong>of</strong> prison discipline by an experienced<br />

staff <strong>of</strong> European gaolers and warders, assisted by a body <strong>of</strong><br />

native assistant warders. Many useful forms <strong>of</strong> industrial<br />

work are undertaken in <strong>the</strong> prisons. The articles manufactured<br />

are <strong>of</strong> uniformly excellent quality, and command a<br />

ready sale to <strong>the</strong> public at remunerative prices.<br />

Escapes from <strong>the</strong> prisons <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State are <strong>of</strong> comparatively<br />

rare occurrence.<br />

All <strong>the</strong> principal industrial and social centres <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State Districts and<br />

are now approachable by good roads, and in most instances also Towns.<br />

by railway, and whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> traveller chooses to enter Perak<br />

by way <strong>of</strong> Penang from <strong>the</strong> north, Teluk Anson from <strong>the</strong><br />

south, or Port Weld in <strong>the</strong> centre, he will find facilities for<br />

passing rapidly and easily to almost any part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State<br />

which he may desire to visit. Communication between<br />

Penang and <strong>the</strong> Perak ports is maintained by daily trips <strong>of</strong><br />
