connected by railway with <strong>the</strong> principal towns <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> States<br />
in which <strong>the</strong>y are situated.<br />
Religion. The Ohurch <strong>of</strong> England, <strong>the</strong> Eoman Catholic Church, and<br />
various denominations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Methodist Church, principal<br />
among which is <strong>the</strong> Methodist Episcopal Mission, are all<br />
represented in <strong>the</strong> Federated States.<br />
There is an English chaplain at headquarters in Perak and<br />
Selangor, and <strong>the</strong> States are annually visited by <strong>the</strong> Lord<br />
Bishop <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Diocese.<br />
Eoman Catholic churches in charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> priests <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
French mission are established in <strong>the</strong> principal towns in<br />
Perak, Selangor, and Negri Sembilan.<br />
Education. In addition to <strong>the</strong> numerous G-overnment vernacular schools<br />
which are to be found in almost every town and village <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Federated States, English schools both for boys and<br />
girls are maintained in Perak, Selangor, and Negri Sembilan,<br />
in some <strong>of</strong> which, particularly <strong>the</strong> Yictoria Institution in<br />
Selangor, <strong>the</strong> Central School at Taiping, Perak, and <strong>the</strong><br />
Anglo-Chinese School at Ipoh, Perak, a staff <strong>of</strong> qualified<br />
Enghsh masters <strong>of</strong>fers every opportunity for acquiring a<br />
sound education in all <strong>the</strong> subjects usually taught in English<br />
schools.<br />
A comprehensive education code is in force in <strong>the</strong> States,<br />
and all schools are ei<strong>the</strong>r entirely maintained by Government<br />
or assisted by grants-in-aid.<br />
Hospitals. The Government has devoted much care to <strong>the</strong> estabhshment<br />
<strong>of</strong> efficient hospitals in all districts, and to <strong>the</strong> engagement<br />
<strong>of</strong> a full staff <strong>of</strong> qualified medical men from <strong>the</strong> United<br />
Kingdom, all <strong>of</strong> whom are in Government employ and are<br />
also permitted to undertake private practice. Their number<br />
at present is fourteen.<br />
Comfortable wards for <strong>the</strong> reception <strong>of</strong> European patients<br />
are attached to <strong>the</strong> hospitals in <strong>the</strong> larger towns. Patients<br />
are <strong>the</strong>re attended by a resident medical <strong>of</strong>ficer and <strong>the</strong><br />
Government nurse matron.<br />
A nursing association has been established in Perak and<br />
Selangor, which employs qualified English nurses to attend<br />
on patients in <strong>the</strong>ir own homes.<br />
Inland com- Means <strong>of</strong> inland communication throughout <strong>the</strong> three<br />
mmications. Western States is already very good, and it is being yet<br />
fur<strong>the</strong>r improved. Travelling both by railway and road has<br />
been made as easy as <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country and <strong>the</strong>
