22. Three years ago standards <strong>in</strong> read<strong>in</strong>g and writ<strong>in</strong>g at Clifton Green Primary<br />

School were broadly average. S<strong>in</strong>ce then, provision has improved rapidly and<br />

recent results at the end <strong>of</strong> Key Stage 2 have been either above average or<br />

average. Pupils’ progress has been very high over the past three years and<br />

boys have made even more progress than girls. The headteacher describes the<br />

school’s steps towards excellence as:<br />

a curriculum driven by what children need, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a particular focus on<br />

speak<strong>in</strong>g and listen<strong>in</strong>g, and read<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a menu <strong>of</strong> different activities to give <strong>English</strong> purpose and enjoyment,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g visits by authors, ‘star writer <strong>of</strong> the week’, World Book Day,<br />

spell<strong>in</strong>g championships, per<strong>for</strong>mance poetry and competitions<br />

everyone knows what everybody does and discussions about children’s<br />

progress take place constantly<br />

monitor<strong>in</strong>g and evaluation are thorough and take many different <strong>for</strong>ms<br />

the success <strong>of</strong> the school has been achieved through a very effective,<br />

collaborative relationship with the parents and governors.<br />

23. The headteacher has assembled a strong team <strong>of</strong> leaders with a range <strong>of</strong><br />

expertise <strong>in</strong> <strong>English</strong>. These subject leaders have helped to <strong>in</strong>spire enthusiasm<br />

among their colleagues <strong>for</strong> children’s literature, early read<strong>in</strong>g, drama and the<br />

use <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation and communication technology <strong>in</strong> <strong>English</strong>. A librarian and<br />

the literacy governor are also <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> plann<strong>in</strong>g. Regular <strong>English</strong> updates to<br />

staff provide guidance on aspects <strong>of</strong> the <strong>English</strong> curriculum.<br />
