IT'S AN ILL WIND BLOWS NOBODY G.OOD.<br />

But while the two in deadly fight,<br />

Half blind <strong>with</strong> rage, bark, tear <strong>and</strong> bite,<br />

More bent each other's flefh to wound<br />

Than heed the bone upon the ground ;<br />

Up comes a third, attracted by<br />

The brawl, <strong>and</strong>, quick the caufe t' efpy,<br />

Snaps up the bone <strong>with</strong>out ado,<br />

And <strong>with</strong> it difappears from view.<br />

The combatants, wh<strong>of</strong>e kindled bile<br />

Had fomewhat fettled down the while,<br />

Exhaufted alm<strong>of</strong>t <strong>with</strong> the fight,<br />

At once both mifs the bone from fight !<br />

And quick as thought, <strong>with</strong> one confent,<br />

They ceafe the fray, <strong>and</strong>, both intent<br />

To find the prize for which they fought,<br />

With eager hafte the bone is fought :<br />

But <strong>all</strong> in vain, no bone is there,<br />

But foam <strong>and</strong> bloodftains everywhere,<br />

Mingled <strong>with</strong> clotted flakes <strong>of</strong> hair.<br />

At length away the dogs depart,<br />

In pain <strong>and</strong> discontent <strong>of</strong> heart,<br />

That they, who fought the prize to gain,<br />

Should doubly l<strong>of</strong>ers thus remain ;<br />

While fome one, who no rifle had run,<br />

The " bone <strong>of</strong> their contention " won.<br />

Such things <strong>and</strong> like refults are feen<br />

T' occur full <strong>of</strong>t young folks between ;<br />

Among the People <strong>of</strong>t'ner ftill,<br />

And Princes, where there's want <strong>of</strong> {kill.<br />

But while I'm on this fubject now,<br />

'An inftance I'll relate to you,<br />

Of which I've known before to-day<br />

Full many end the felf-fame way.<br />

Two fuitors woo'd a Burgher maid,<br />

With dow'ry rich, <strong>and</strong> each afraid<br />

His rival mould <strong>with</strong> her prevail,<br />

him <strong>all</strong> he could t'aflail<br />

Bethought<br />

And prejudice<br />

the other's name,<br />
