Drop out!!!
Sheriff Paul babeu
Sharing the thoughts and
opinions of Maricopans
InMaricopa News asked Facebook followers for their thoughts on the controversy swirling around Pinal County Sheriff
Paul Babeu and an ex-lover who is said to be a Mexican national and who Babeu is accused of threatening to deport if he
revealed the relationship.
Babeu, long tough on illegal immigration, is running in the District 4 Congressional race.
We asked: Do you support him? Could the situation be handled differently? Should he step down from being sheriff?
Should he drop out of the District 4 Congressional race? Does it matter if he’s gay? Does it matter if an ex-lover is an illegal
immigrant? Did Babeu misuse his office? Is Babeu getting a raw deal? What does this mean for his political future?
(This is a sampling of comments. Find us at Facebook.com/InMaricopa)
Kimmi Pettrey
no it does not matter his sexual orientation! there are more pressing
issues in this area such as drugs , and gangs that the tax payer dollars
should be going towards. If all the people in office let their skeletons
out of the closet there would no goverment! Our own past presidents
and politicians had had affairs and prostitutes and there were never
asked to step down. If the man is doing his job correctly which alot
of people feel he is , leave it alone , what goes on in his private life his
own buisness.
GrumpyJoe Treadway
Public Opinion? Just ask “What’s Changed?” Nothing! If there is any criticism,
it will be the bigots that always make noise about the difference
in people, not the acceptance of all people being different.
Jose Linares
I dont think that his personal relationship should have anything to do
with his job as sheriff. I fully support him and if it comes out that he
did threaten his ex-lover with deportation then he should pay for that
and that only. I commend him for being honest about himself and I
look forward in continuing my support for Sheriff Babue. I also dont
think he should drop out of the race, what politician in this day in age
doesnt have skeletons in their closet? No one is perfect.
Maryann Spaulding
I agree with the three above me, Kimmi, GrumpyJoe and Jose. Who
cares about his personal life. There are much more important things
to focus on. There is no reason for him to step down or stop pressing
forward with his career.
Beverly Ernest Freitag
I still support him, his sexual orientation should have nothing to do
with him being Sheriff or running for Dist. 4 Congressional race. I believe
that these people who are making such a big issue out of this are
probably illegal and would love to see Sheriff Babeu leave office. He
has done nothing wrong and we need someone like him to either stay
Facebook readers look at his record and
job performance, not his personal life.
Sheriff of Pinal County or make changes in Washington. What about
a person’s constitutional rights. Oh yea forgot the President doesn’t
follow the Constitutional Rights.
Vincent Manfredi
Response time cut in half, and a budget in good shape, but some
people want to talk about his sexual orientation, which is pathetic.
Tom Candelaria
All I know is that he is a libertarian-leaning sheriff who refused to
deploy speed cameras in this county because he believed they were
unconstitutional and respresented a safety concern. He’s also one of
the only people in government taking the “Fast and Furious” scandal
seriously... I support him.
Anthony Lopo
Some of the questions cannot be answered until all the facts are out.
Let’s see what the investigation finds before making any judgments.
For now, I still support him. Being he is in law enforcement and in the
position of Sheriff, he should have know better then to be involved
with a person that is here illegally. Poor judgment on that part.
Thomas DeGraphenreed II
This society has not gotten to the place where we over look a public
country was built on the principals from The Bible, and what those
who hold office should be held to, after all, he swore on A Bible to
Jodi Baldwin Rocha
He has proven himself to be a VERY good public servant! Sexual orientation
means NOTHING! I fully support him!!!!!
Jessica Lynne Richards
I just found a picture of him and his gay lover... wow people, leave the
poor guy alone.
Jan DeHart
I think he’s doing a great job, agree with the above, leave him alone!
MUSD to blend high-tech learning
with traditional teaching methods
BY CHRISTIA GIBBONS
Ninety sixth-, seventh- and eighth-
graders will get a crack at a new kind
of classroom in the Maricopa Unified
School District this fall.
Students from both middle schools
— 30 in each grade — will pilot a
program at Maricopa Wells Middle
School in what educators call blended
learning.
To the students, it means using
the technology with a safety valve: a
teacher.
While a software-learning program
will direct them through lessons at
their own pace, a classroom teacher
will monitor their progress through
computer analytics. At the drop of a
hat, that the teacher can pull a student
— or group of students — away from
the computer and present a lesson a
different way.
The teacher will supplement
learning with more traditional methods
such as field trips, group discussions,
and projects throughout the school day.
“It’s almost a very free, organic
education,” said Desert Wind Middle
School Principal Joseph Veres, who is
shepherding the new program. “Our
kids want technology, they want to
have control of their education, and
they want to go at their own pace.”
Veres is working on his Ph.D. and
is researching blended learning and
teacher effectiveness.
Deputy Superintendent Ember
Conley called him a “forward thinker.
He is the expert.”
“I’m never satisfied with the status
quo,” she said. “This is the right thing
for kids so they can learn, grow and
expand using technology as a tool.”
Blended learning is still in its
early stages of development and has
its critics. Opponents say it’s too
socially isolating for students, higher
achievement isn’t guaranteed, and
some software programs don’t meet
educational needs.
John Huppenthal, Arizona’s
superintendent of public instruction,
favors blended learning, and the state
is working with a math program in the
Yuma Elementary School District.
“We’re testing the environment
ourselves to see the academic gains,”
Huppenthal said.
The right software is vital in this
evolving field, he said. “We would love
to work with (MUSD) on the selection
of the software … and how they’ll be
tracking achievement.”
William Lange, social studies and
broadcast media teacher at DWMS and
a blended-learning proponent, said
the new program “is the best of all
things from home schooling to online
schooling, and the best of brick and
mortar blended into one space.”
The program also will use the
existing Maricopa Online classes,
which include 30 languages and
agricultural courses.
The program will be housed at
Maricopa Wells Middle School because
the school is under a state mandate
to restructure. The blended-learning
program is one step.
“We’re in a school improvement
situation, and we’re in an important
mode,” Maricopa Wells Principal Rick
Abel said.
Some people are concerned the
new program will only be for the high
achieving students, or, conversely, the
behavior-problem kids.
A system through which students
apply to the program and then are
chosen by lottery evens the playing
field, Abel said.
“This won’t be an alternative school
for behavior problems, although that
“(Blended learning)
is the best of all
things from home
schooling to online
schooling, and the
best of brick and
mortar blended into
one space.”
– Desert Wind Middle School
teacher William Lange
would not keep a kid like that from
being included if this could be a better
way for them to learn,” he said. “We’re
all about the opportunity for kids.”
Conley, the deputy superintendent,
said: “It’s our hope and goal to add
more kids and a grade each year, so
we’ll have fifth graders in 2013.”
Veres said by having the program
part of the bigger campus, all activities
from band to athletics to school clubs
are available to the blended-learning
student. Transportation logistics are
being addressed.
To market and promote the new
program, Veres is working with the
Career/Technical Education students
at Maricopa High School to come up
with a plan to get the word out to the
community.
The program has been named
MUSD20+1 to represent the district
moving into the 21 st century.
“I met with them and these kids are
incredible. They were just spinning
ideas and were talking about an iPod
application for students, among other
things,” Veres said.
A model of the fall program may
be available to incoming sixth graders
in a four-week, tuition-based summer
school math program at DWMS, Veres
said. The details are being worked
out in conjunction through a youth
development partnership with the city
of Maricopa.
As district administrators and
faculty continue to ready the program
for fall, Veres said, “We want to offer
the best to our students, but the best
is different. Some will excel with
traditional learning, some will grab
the technology. We want to have all the
options.”

Getting to know
Chief Steven Stahl
BY TIM HOWSARE
InMaricopa News sat down with Steven Stahl, Maricopa’s new chief of police,
to find out what makes him tick not only as a law enforcement professional,
but as a citizen, father and husband.
Stahl, who lives with his wife Liz in Gilbert, likes to play and watch golf,
exercise and read. He has two adult daughters, Nicole and Katlynn, who live
in the Valley.
Stahl, 51, was raised on a farm in Redfield, N.D., and is the oldest of four
children.
He was hired as interim chief in October through an intergovernmental
with the Mesa Police Department, where he had risen through the ranks to
commander over a 25-year career there. He was sworn in as the permanent
chief at the Feb. 21 Maricopa City Council meeting.
We asked the chief questions about his job as police chief and his professional
background, and about his personal life.
What are three top challenges facing the
Qdepartment?
I think it goes without saying one
of the challenges was the morale of the
police department when I came here.
Morale was pretty low, and I know
there were officers with applications
in at other jurisdictions. I responded
by making myself available to all staff
and inviting all stakeholders into supervisors’
meetings, along with the two
police labor organizations (Fraternal
Order of Police and City of Maricopa
Police Association).
The second challenge is to attack every
piece of the Citygate audit that was
presented at the (Feb. 21) city council
meeting and begin working immediately
on remedies to all those situations
and make the Maricopa Police Department
even better. (Citygate Associates
LLC is a California-based company
specializing in evaluations of management
practices for city departments
and police departments.)
The third is the budget. Every budget
is extremely limited, and we can
never go back to the way police departments
had it five years ago when we got
everything in the way of resources and
people. Now we have to be smart in the
way we use resources.
What are the main safety concerns for
Maricopa residents?
The top public safety concern is for
neighbors to get to know their neighbors.
Criminals are taking advantage that
people might see something suspicious
and not get involved. Even if you are a
seasonal visitor, there are things you
can put in place along with the police
department to help you watch out for
your neighborhood. In Maricopa we
are very good with crimes against persons
and violent crimes, but we have a
lot of work to do with property crimes.
We as a society need to get back to
knowing our neighbors. You are there
24 hours a day, but police can’t be there
24 hours a day.
We want to host block-watch gettogethers
and HOA meetings. We live
in Arizona and it’s beautiful outside;
I’m from the Midwest and that’s what
we did.
How close is the department with hiring
two commanders?
We have extended an offer to one
of the candidates and he has accepted
the offer. He has some things to tie up
before he leaves his other job sometime
in March.
With the second one we are still in
the interview process. This is a very
vital position in the city of Maricopa
and all candidates who have applied
have been extremely qualified. There’s
no question they could do the job, but
whomever I select as the second commander
has to fit with the community
officers and not just myself.
What is your philosophy on law enforce
ment?
My philosophy is very simple. Officers
need to treat every call, everything
they do, as if they are protecting their
own community.
They need to be talking to people.
Not just talking to people who look like
bad people, but talking to good people
in the community. The more you get to
know people in the community the better
policing you can do.
I expect us to ask all kinds of questions
to get to the core of the issues.

eckhardt to have closed Merit
board hearing March 8
A Merit Board hearing for Maricopa
Police Lt. Larry Eckhardt is scheduled
for March 8.
Eckhardt was placed on paid
administrative leave July 22 and then
sent back to work in the Criminal
Investigations Division by then-
Interim Police Chief Steven Stahl in
November.
Stahl said in November it was a
better use of taxpayer dollars to have
Eckhardt at work than sitting at home.
City spokeswoman LaTricia Woods
said Eckhardt has requested a closed
hearing, so it will not be open to the
public.
McDonald loses
civil suit against city
Former Community Services
Director Marty McDonald’s civil
lawsuit against the city ended Feb. 28
in favor of the city. McDonald claimed
negligence, malicious prosecution
and intentional infliction of emotional
distress.
A Pinal County
Superior Court
judge granted the
city’s motion for a
directed verdict,
which means after
hearing all evidence
presented
Marty McDonald
by McDonald, he failed to bring forth
enough evidence to establish a claim.
McDonald was placed on
administrative leave in May 2009,
one day before being indicted on
two felony charges stemming from
the alleged misuse of a city FedEx
shipping discount. He was terminated
in August 2009.
Those charges were dropped when
McDonald produced an email showing
he requested his personal FedEx
account be removed from the city’s
prior to placing his shipping order.
Judge sends Stant
firing back to Merit board
A Pinal County Superior Court
judge ruled in February the city
may have violated former Maricopa
Police Sgt. Aki Stant’s constitutional
right to have representation during
interviews with Internal Affairs
Investigator Mike Burns, and Stant’s
termination should be remanded to
the Merit Board before the court can
proceed with his $1.5 million lawsuit
against the city.
Stant was fired by the city in June
2010 for failing to answer questions
during an internal investigation. His
termination was upheld by the Merit
Board and then-City Manager Kevin
Evans.
Stant and his attorney, James
Cool, claimed Stant’s due process
rights were violated when he failed to
comply with an investigation into the
actions of one of his subordinates.
Then-Police Chief Kirk Fitch said
at Stant’s Merit Board hearing Stant’s
failure to comply was grounds for
termination.
Cool asserted that during Stant’s
second interview with Burns, the
investigation had turned into one
against his client for failure to answer
questions, but Stant was not made
aware his job was in jeopardy or
permitted to have a representative.

wyatt, 6, and Sandy bruce are gathering stuffed animals to be prizes at the March 24 carnival at
Sequoia Pathway academy.
From mechanical bull to cake walk,
carnival offers food, fun
BY CHRISTIA GIBBONS
A mechanical bull, laser tag, vendor
village and lots of stuffed animals. Oh,
and a 12-foot alligator. A real one.
That’s what Sandy Bruce has in
store for the third Sequoia Pathway
Academy carnival 2-6 p.m. March 24
at 19265 N. Porter Road.
Bruce is this year’s chairwoman
and said she’s working hard to come
up with new and fresh ideas for the
carnival.
“I’m just a mom who works here a
lot,” Bruce said. “I love doing this kind
of thing. I love making things happen.”
Cost is $9 for kids and $1 for adults.
Pony rides, the dunk tank, a hoopsshoot
contest and food are extra.
For a little added excitement, one
of the teachers will be riding the
mechanical bull because students are
filling up jars with money in a Make
Your Teacher Ride the Bull contest.
Each classroom is coming up with
its own carnival games, and members
of the Parent-Teacher Organization
will have some of their own. Each class
also is putting together a gift basket to
be sold in a silent auction. A golf gift
basket already has more than $600
worth of golf and other items in it.
There also will be an old-fashioned
cake walk.
The Phoenix Herpetological Society
will be on hand with some of it large
reptiles for the kids to see and pet.
And AZ K-9 services will give several
demonstrations, including a carjacking
scenario.
Bruce is dropping clues around the
school and around town giving the
public a chance to win a certificate
good for the admittance of two kids
and two adults, four hotdog meals,
four snow cones, four bags of popcorn,
four hoop-shot tickets, four dunk-tank
tickets, and 12 raffle tickets. There are
five clues in all.
Proceeds for the fundraiser help
fund a playground.
“We desperately need one; we don’t
have much out there,” Bruce said.
Back up your words with you own good name
BY WAYNE BLOCK
You will notice my name appears at the
top of this column. That is not by coincidence.
This is my version of a letter to the
editor, or a comment at the end of an
online news story. The fact that my
name is attached is as it should be.
When InMaricopa.com first announced
in December it would require
posters to news stories to prove their
identity, and have their real names be
available on their posts, there was heated
debate.
The majority seemed to feel if you
had an opinion you wished to express
publically, you should be required to
identify yourself. Others claimed that
requiring posters to be identified would
be a violation of their First Amendment
right to free speech and it would silence
critics and whistle-blowers who might
fear retribution.
I did a very unscientific survey of
the 111 comments attached to Publisher
Scott Bartle’s story announcing
the decision and outlining
the reasons for it. By my
count 23 posters felt it was
a good idea and 12 were opposed.
There were four others
for which I couldn’t determine
a position.
Count me firmly in the proidentification
column.
First, let me explain as I have in
the past, that I am not an employee
of InMaricopa. I am an independent
contractor. My columns are merely
Welcome back our Canadian friends!
WAYNE BLOCK
for other work I do for the company’s
various publications. My columns will
not be censored.
Sure, this one is firmly in favor
of the InMaricopa policy. Others, in
the future may not be quite as
friendly.
I have been reading InMaricop.com
for about three years,
two of them before moving here
last May.
Virtually every major newspaper
in the country requires
letters to the editor be signed
with the writer’s real name. In
fact, almost all newspapers will then
verify that the name signed actually belongs
to the writer.
And yet, newspapers have no shortage
of readers wishing to express their
opinions on a daily basis.
It is only in the online world where
anonymity of opinion took hold.
The cries about limitation of freedom
of speech, to me, hold no water.
InMaricopa.com, and other outlets
that are beginning to require some
form of personal responsibility for
written words, do not prohibit anyone
from expressing their views. The sole
exception is the often quoted “shouting
fire in a crowded theater,” as noted by
Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., in
the Supreme Court case of Schenck vs.
United States in 1919.
Claims the requirement of accountability
inhibits whistle-blowing also fall
deaf on my ears.
Sure, it can be difficult for someone
to stand up to authority, whether it be
an employer or government, however if
a cause is important enough, the courage
can be found. Like-minded people
can get together and protest is certainly
not unheard of in this country.
There instances in which fear of retribution
is a legitimate worry. However,
much of the inanity that has passed
for “discussion” on many of the boards
I have read over the years is actually
prompted by the cloak of anonymity.
It becomes far too easy to hurl unwar-
ranted comments when nobody knows
your name.
Comments on news stories are now
far more reasoned, if fewer in number.
However, the basic idea of requiring
people to take responsibility for their
words is still sound.
I recently spoke with Maricopa’s
new Chief of Police Steve Stahl, who
publically thanked InMaricopa for instituting
the policy at a recent Chamber
of Commerce meeting.
“The public is entitled to state their
comments,” Stahl said. “Everybody
has the first amendment right to free
speech and I respect that and I truly
believe in it.
“In Mesa, we had the same problem.
When we met with the media we said
some of this blogging gets very hateful
and very spiteful and encourages
spiteful and angry comments back and
forth. They encourage arguing on line,
but they can do it anonymously and
that’s where I find it dangerous ground
on the First Amendment right, where
if you encourage and are promoting
anger and spite toward individuals or
entities, I no longer believe that you
should be able to do it anonymously.
I think you should be required to state
who you are.”
Stahl noted that the level of news
`story comments has become more
civil since the requirement took effect.
“The City of Maricopa has great people.
They want the best for their community,
they want the best for America,”
he added. But people get emotional
over topics and sometimes they let that
emotion encourage them to say things
they wish, later on, that they probably
hadn’t said in that way.”
It has become common in America
these days for people not wanting to
take responsibility for their own actions.
It’s always someone else’s fault.
It’s time to bring responsibility
back.
YOUR HOME BUSINESS
Is your website
working for or
against you? DEBRA
BY DEBRA PLUNKETT
For most small businesses, particularly
home-based ones, an effective website
is your storefront. It’s your face to the
world and only chance to make a first
impression.
It needs to be working for you, not
against you.
Every single piece of website traffic
a small business attracts is crucial.
Just getting people to visit your site is
enough of a challenge, but once they’re
there you want to do everything in
your power to ensure they take action
toward becoming a client.
You have a few options. There are
brochure sites, which essentially are
an online version of a flier or
physical brochure you would
hand out. They are informative
and may include a call to action,
but they’re not interactive and
don’t include an e-commerce
component.
If you have products to sell
and want to include a shopping
cart, you need a more complex
site.
Whichever type of site fits your
business best, there is more to a good
site than simply being aesthetically
pleasing. It needs to be functional. It
needs to accomplish the goal of closing
business.
Tiny, nearly imperceptible elements
of a page can have a big impact on how
visitors interact with it. For example,
PLUNKETT
changing the color on a “buy now” button
can markedly improve how many
times it’s clicked; rearranging photos
or changing fonts can do the same.
Making these types of
changes in a disciplined way is
what marketers call A/B testing
(because it compares version A
to version B).
Many more fascinating
examples can be viewed on
sites like www.whichtestwon.
com — and from them, lessons
can be learned.
In a recent example, a long
headline for an offer was tested
against a shorter, punchier headline
with a sub-headline (both containing
essentially the same information,
arranged visually differently) with the
winning, shorter, headline increasing
the desired result by 38 percent. How
much more profitable could your
business be if you were nearly 40
March 2012 InMaricopa.com BUSINESS 13
percent more effective at closing sales?
To conduct A/B tests on your own,
you don’t have to be an expert Web
developer. Such tools as Google Web
Optimizer (www.google.com/websiteoptimizer)
make it easier for business
owners to run tests on their sites. However,
it does require a bit of technological
savvy. Before diving in, there are a
few tips:
Test one thing at a time – if you
change the layout and the button color,
it may be difficult to assess which item
had the greater impact.
If your rate of conversion (the number
of visitors taking a desired action)
is consistently low, consider your call
to action. Not being clear about what
you’re hoping people will do on your
site is one of the most common pitfalls.
Let them know what you want from
them:
• Click here for a free report
• Download our 7 tips for success
here
If your site is an e-commerce site,
a successful conversion probably is an
actual sale.
If you’re in a service industry, perhaps
the goal for your website is a business
lead, getting people to call or book
an appointment.
Remember that conversion, when it
comes to A/B testing and making your
website efficient, is about taking your
prospects to the next step. Whether it
is a direct sale, an additional inquiry
or a visit to another page for more information,
you want website visitors to
continue on the path you’ve identified
to a successful sale.
It may take a lot of trial and error
and continual tweaking, but the bottom
line is you can’t ignore the impact
your website can have on the growth
and prosperity of your business.
Glennwildegroves couple
craft one-of-a-kind wares
BY JOSH SKALNIAK
Mastering a craft takes time and
discipline. And if there are two people
who know that to be true, it’s Steve and
Cynthia Portrey.
The couple opened their business,
Wood & Weaving, in Maricopa in 2008.
Steve specializes in woodworking,
creating one-of-a kind segmented
bowls. Cynthia makes shawls, blankets
and table runners, but says she most
enjoys making one-of-a-kind scarves.
The couple creates and sells
their crafts out of their home in the
Glennwildegroves subdivision.
“We really like it here,” Cynthia
said. “Everything we do is handmade
from an artisan. You wouldn’t find
anything like this in a mall. We sell out
of our house so we can sell it 30 percent
cheaper than through a store.”
Steve creates bowls by layering rings
of wood on top of each other. Once the
layering is complete, he turns the bowl
on a lathe to smooth the edges.
“I’ve been turning bowls since
1998,” Steve said. “It’s never out of the
same wood. It’s never the same shape,
and never the same size.”
Each bowl takes Steve 50 to 60
hours to complete with an average of
400 pieces of wood per bowl.
“There is nothing dyed,” he said. “If
John Deere fl exible
fi nancing options for all
your landscaping needs.
(on approved credit)
I want purple or black, then I have to go
in and buy that exotic wood the color
that I want.”
He uses many types of wood
including maple, cherry, walnut and
oak. He spends about $100 on wood
for each bowl.
Steve said he once had a woman
from Baltimore ask him to build her an
urn from black walnut for her dead dog
because the dog used to always pee on
her black walnut trees.
“That’s what she picked out for her
dog,” Steve said.
Steve also builds bookshelves, cabinets,
wall units and television stands.
Though Cynthia said she has had
an interest in weaving since 1990, she
did not seriously start refining her craft
until 1998.
She uses tencel, alpaca, wool,
mohair, cotton, linen and rayon.
“My specialty is I like putting
ribbon in the scarves,” Cynthia said. “I
like using lots of color versus plain.”
Cynthia buys all her fabrics
wholesale so she can keep her prices
down, she said, and uses such exotic
fibers as bamboo.
“Fibers can get pretty expensive,”
she said.
It takes her about eight hours to
make a scarf, but most of that time is
spent setting up the loom, or, as Cyn-
joking about how long it takes her to
Although Cynthia takes requests
from customers on specific designs, she
likes to create her own.
“If they like it, fine. If they don’t,
there is Walmart,” she said.
Steve said he first learned his craft
from his father, and then dabbled in it
for about 15 years until he got into an
artisan co-op in Berkley Springs, W.Va.
“I get my designs from traveling
around,” he said, “seeing the
outdoor walls in around Phoenix and
incorporating those designs. I also like
the Casa Grande Ruins, Pueblo Indian
designs and petroglyphs.”
on her own and then took classes
for a couple years from a woman in
Walkersville, Md., about 60 miles from
Washington, D.C.
The couple started selling their art
in 2003 after participating in an artisan
studio tour called Over the Mountain
Studio Tour in Jefferson County, W.Va.
The couple showcased their art
in Maricopa last year at the annual
Province Arts and Crafts Show.
“We hope to continue with (such
shows),” Cynthia said. “It was relatively
profitable for us.”
of the clever nature of infections these
days.
In the past, malware authors were
proud they infected you and made it a
point to let you know that they “gotcha.”
Today, malware code is specifically written
to be silent and lurk in the background so
as to go undetected.
Even if you are diligent in keeping all
your software updated, all it takes is one
bad decision (clicking on a fake link, opening
an infected email attachment, downloading
files from file-sharing networks,
etc.) to have a silent thief slip into
your computer.
The whole idea is to find a way
to gain access to your computer
in a way allowing a remote hacker
to silently run programs on your
computer. It used to be Windows
was the primary target, but today
virtually everything you use on
the Internet (browsers, PDF readers,
Flash players, email programs,
etc.) is being targeted as a way into your
precious hard drive.
So, before you jump into doing your
taxes on your computer, take a few minutes
and do some spot checks for signs of silent
intruders.
A common sign of malicious programs
is a computer taking an extraordinarily
long time to start up.
Windows users should check the task
manager (ctrl-alt-del) to see how many processes
are running on the computer (look
in the bottom left corner). Make sure you
do this spot check right after restarting the
computer so nothing is running yet.
When we perform our overhaul cleanup
service, we strive to get the running
processes on Windows XP systems in the
30 to 40 range (laptops tend to require
more processes) and Windows 7 and Vista
systems in the 35 to 45 range.
If you have 60, 70 or 80-plus processes
running, you want to make sure none of
those excess processes are hidden malware
programs.
While you have the task manager open,
KEN COLBURN
click onto the performance tab and check
the CPU usage and history. On a clean machine,
your system should be idling, which
means the CPU usage should be very low
and stable (4 percent to 8 percent) and the
graph showing the CPU usage
history should be fairly low on the
graph.
If your CPU usage is jumping
up and down, or is running at a
much higher number and the history
graph shows wild swings up
and down, something is running
in the background of the computer
and should be identified.
Have someone you trust do an
inspection of the various startup areas in
Windows to see if there are obvious signs
of malware (blank entries in MSConfig,
strange keys in the registry, etc.)
Even if you aren’t infected with malware,
getting these indicators back to
normal levels will rejuvenate your computer
and make everything run faster and
smoother for everything you do, not just
your tax return.
Another danger for households with
teenagers (or anyone who tends to engage
in file-sharing networks) is the accidental
sharing of your tax records or other sensitive
files on your hard drive.
Many file-sharing programs automatically
share certain folders on the hard drive
with the rest of the file-sharing universe,
so make sure you check your installed programs
to see if any strange programs have
been installed before you get started.
March 2012 InMaricopa.com HEALTH 17
STD rates highest in
those younger than 25
BY DARREL JOHNSON
Part of the public health mission, according
to state law, is to track and
prevent the spread of infectious disease
within the county’s population. Sexually
transmitted infections are serious
problems we need to address
to protect the health and welfare
of the public.
Infection rates among people
younger than 25 are the
highest, not only in the United
States, but right here in Pinal
County. The most current data
states Pinal County had more
than 950 reported cases of
chlamydia in 2010.
Many of those cases were diagnosed
when a pregnancy test was done.
The rate of gonorrhea infection
nearly doubled in Pinal County from
2010 to 2011.
Investigation and interviewing
those infected with sexually transmitted
infections can be highly personal in
nature, but it is important people potentially
exposed to or infected are given
the chance to be tested and treated.
There are many arguments against
being tested or using protective
measures.
For example, “If I have not had intercourse
recently, why do I need to be
tested?”
Many infected people do not have
any symptoms and the only way to
know is to be tested. In the case of the
high chlamydia rates, nearly 80 percent
of those infected have no symptoms, so
most go undiagnosed and untreated.
The Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention estimated that one in four
sexually active Americans have a sexually
transmitted infection. While most
are younger than 25, the CDC also is
noting an increase of infections among
older adults and retirees as many are
living longer and staying healthier and
DARREL JOHNSON
sexually active well into retirement.
Education on the infection,
methods to stay healthy, and providing
access to health services are critical
in the prevention of the spread of
communicable disease.
Some people delay or avoid discussing
sexually transmitted infections
because they fear it will
encourage young people to experiment
with sex instead of
abstaining from sexual activity,
but the topic of sexually transmitted
infection should be a
regular part of ones’ health and
wellness discussion with your
health-care provider, spouse
or significant other, and any other intimate
partner.
No one is immune and safer sex
practices should be used by everyone
who is not in a mutually monogamous,
long-term relationship.
We recommend all sexually active
persons be tested annually for chlamydia,
gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV.
Pinal County Public Health District
just opened a clinic in Maricopa and
offers a number of services to enable
our community to be informed and stay
healthy.
Other services include well-woman
screenings, family planning services,
immunizations for adults and children
including several that prevent sexually
transmitted infections such as hepatitis
B and human papillomavirus which can
lead to cervical and oral cancers, and
women, infants and children services.
Darrel Johnson is a community health
specialist/STD surveillance with Pinal
County investigating and interviewing
treatment has been given.
When buying or
selling, don’t forget
the ‘sizzle’ factor
BY CHRISTIA GIBBONS
Whether buying or selling a house, the
“sizzle” factor can make the difference.
Maybe it’s being able to see out to a
bench in a shady spot in the backyard
as one enters the front door. Maybe it’s
an arrangement of candles drawing the
eye to a tiled back splash in the kitchen,
or a glass jar filled with clothing pins in
an otherwise bare laundry room.
A hint of possibilities. A touch of,
well, sizzle.
Suzie Rotter of Clear Skies Realty
said the key to buying or selling a house
is whether “someone can picture their
own stuff in it.”
She recommends decluttering and
depersonalizing a house – but don’t denude
it. “Use little things that create a
difference.”
And leave the premises. Sure it’s
your house, but buyers feel uncomfortable
assessing a future home when the
present owners are there, Rotter said.
“People want to wander freely,” she
said.
Beyond the decorative simple
touches, there are bigger items buyers
seem to especially like right now, Rotter
said: granite counter tops, double
sinks, walk-in pantries and water softeners.
Rotter said she has great hopes for
the housing market in Maricopa.
“I know some people are concerned
we’re turning into a town of rentals, but
I just don’t see it. People are still looking
for a small town and a good-priced
home to raise their family.”
She added: “We’re done with the
exodus of people caught up in the sub
prime problems; now we’re building a
foundation.”

Is your real estate
agent a sales rep
or consultant?
BY PAT LAIRSON
One Saturday morning I was at my real
estate brokerage office for floor duty.
This is when an agent commits to being
in the office for a certain amount of
time for the purpose of answering calls
or servicing people who might walk in
and have questions about a property.
The phone rang and I picked it up,
“Pat Lairson, Coldwell Banker.” On
the other end I hear a woman,
probably out on her morning
walk, asking, “Can you tell me
the price of the property on …”
and gave me the address.
I looked up the property on
the Multiple Listing Service
and in the meantime struck up
a conversation with the woman
to build rapport and find
out more about who I was talking with.
Then I feel it. Freeze mode, the
wall, a line of defense drawn.
In other words, the caller wanted
information only and put up the
do-not-sell-me-something shield of
protection. Yes, real estate agents are
sales agents because they help you
buy or sell a property, but real estate
agents really are consultants.
Our job as a Realtor is to present you
with the most up-to-date information
about the market, the property you are
interested in buying or selling, give
you the facts and then let you make the
decision best for you and your family.
As a Realtor, we are mandated to
act in your best interest at hand and to
be loyal and confidential. Much like a
counselor, we walk with you through
the physical, financial and emotional
PAT LAIRSON
real estate process.
We have seen prices sky rocket
and then fall with an earth shaking
plop leaving clouds of foreclosures,
bankruptcies, short sales and an
investor heaven. We currently are
seeing prices go up and many homes
listed getting multiple offers.
Where do you fit into all of this?
There are people who went through
a short sale early on who think they
may never be able to get back in
the real estate market so they
continue to rent. Some people
want to sell their home, but
are holding out because they
think the market has not gone
up enough to make a profit.
Some people are still waiting
for prices to drop lower before
buying.
Everyone has a different story and
what is best for you may not be best for
your neighbor.
As a Realtor, the best way to help
you is to consult with you. To listen
to your situation, present all the
available options and data, refer you to
appropriate resources as needed, and
then you will be prepared to make an
informed decision to sell or buy your
property.
Find a Realtor who does this and
you will be working with a real estate
consultant, not just a salesperson.
MuSD trains on the concept of
backward Design
Maricopa Unified School District
held a two-day workshop and training
session recently for nearly 50 employees
on the concept of Backward Design
in education, which analyzes the 12th
requirements for each grade.
“Professional development is a key
initiative for our district this year and
training on such analytical methods to
define the scope of work per grade levels
allows our staff to set expectations
for students in a different manner than
that which they may be accustomed,”
Two Maricopa High School Digital
a state competition March 27 and 28.
They received invitations to the 2012
SkillsUSA Arizona Championship at
the Phoenix Convention Center after
wins in the Pinal County Regional
Competition.
Mariel Manuel and Collette Olsen
placed second and third, respectively,
in the Arizona Region 3 Skills USA
competition in January.
The two competed against students
from Casa Grande’s Vista Grande High
School. Five students from each school
were tested on numerous photographic
skills, along with a timed photo shoot.
Others on the MHS team placed fifth,
sixth and seventh.
“I was surprised to finish so high;
it was a good experience,” Mariel said.
“It’s not your ordinary egg pho-
Marie ManueL
tograph,” Mariel said of her work. “I
didn’t want to portray a typical interpretation
of an egg. Although the main
focus of the photograph is the eggs, I
added interest by drawing the Avenged
Sevenfold skeletons onto them to guide
the eye to follow around the picture,
not only capturing the skeletons, but
also the curve of the eggs.”
Colette said she appreciated meeting
other students in the regional contest
who share “my love for photography,
and I’m excited to study and prepare
for the state competition.”
“In this particular shot, the contrast
is what inspired me to take this
image,” Colette said. “The brightness
of the sun’s reflection, the darkness
of the shadows, and the smoothness
of the sand create a visually striking
photograph.”
Spring cleaning for the soul
BY REV. ERIC BROWN
Have you noticed we all tend to accumulate
bad habits? Good habits are
hard to accumulate, but bad habits
tend to pile up with no problem.
Let’s say you have a scoop of ice
cream one night before you go to bed.
You enjoy that ice cream and consider
it a harmless indulgence. And since it
was so nice, the next night, you do the
same. Maybe you do it the next night
and then again the next night.
Pretty soon, you have made a habit
of ice cream before bed. Before long,
you notice this habit accumulating on
your hips and see the habit when you
weigh yourself on the bathroom scale.
Bad habits sneak up on us and accumulate.
I have a suggestion for you and your
bad habits: Spring cleaning for the soul.
I suggest you set aside 40 days to work
on eliminating a bad habit, or two.
You know what spring cleaning is,
right? Spring cleaning is when we clean
the closets, dust the shelves and give
the house a thorough scrubbing. Your
soul needs the same sort of cleaning.
Over the years, our souls get
burdened with dirty, messy, dusty
habits. We yell at the kids, say rude
words to our spouse, insist on going
first at the stop sign, treat the cashier
at the grocery store unkindly, eat the
wrong foods, smoke too much, drink
too much, and the like.
All these bad habits damage our
souls. Our souls are the interior, eternal
part of who we are, and they can be
damaged, just as our exterior, physical
self gets damaged.
I suggest you set aside the month
of March and first 10 days of April for
spring soul-cleaning.
You do it by choosing a bad habit
(just one, or maybe two — no more)
and choosing to stop the bad habit for
this short time. Do not try to stop the
habit forever, just for 40 days.
If, for example, the problem is that
scoop of ice cream before bed, get all of
the ice cream out of the house and keep
it out of the house for 40 days. Or, if the
problem is yelling at the kids, involve
them in your soul cleaning. Ask them
to politely note when you have raised
your voice. Have them give you a ticket
or a yellow card (like in soccer) if you
are too loud. Try this for 40 days.
4 th
Annual
Maricopa
You can do anything for just 40 days.
Forty days is a long time, but not too
long. Forty days is not forever. I suspect
that, after those first 40 days, you
will notice something amazing: You did
not need that bad habit after all.
After 40 days of not yelling, you find
other ways to communicate. After 40
days without ice cream, you find you do
not need the ice cream. The habit will
be broken and you will find other blessings,
too. Your relationships will be
better without the yelling. Your health
will be better without the ice cream.
This practice of giving up and the
length of time I suggest may sound
familiar to you. For 1,500 years or
so, the Christian church has invited
the faithful to celebrate the season of
Lent. Lent is 40 days devoted to prayer
and fasting, and is the 40 days before
Easter. This year, Easter is celebrated
on April 8.
During Lent, Christians give
something up (we call it “fasting”)
and spend time in introspection,
considering the bad habits that have
accumulated. For Christians, the
season of Lent began Feb. 22.
Even if you are not a Christian, or
if you are part of a Christian tradition
that does not celebrate Lent, try 40
days of habit breaking. Even non-
Christians accumulate bad habits,
sins, and wrong choices. Give it a try
— clean out your soul.
STUDENT ATHLETE SPOTLIgHT
Running back Randel
Barber makes the grade
BY WAYNE BLOCK
It was obvious throughout the football
season that Maricopa High School
running back Randel Barber was a
special talent and had a great chance of
earning a college scholarship.
The only real question was whether
he could qualify academically.
What he accomplished in the
classroom during the first semester
of his senior year, lifting his grades to
the point where he eventually signed
a scholarship to attend Minot (N.D.)
State, is the reason he has been chosen
the InMaricopa Spotlight Athlete .
Barber’s 1,384 rushing yards and
23 touchdowns were well documented
and witnessed by thousands of fans.
It is effort in the classroom, though,
that determines an athlete’s true future,
and Barber, while he may have learned
the lesson later than most, rose to his
full potential last semester.
For athletes to qualify for a
scholarship at an NCAA Division I or
II school they must be certified by the
NCAA Clearinghouse.
That group examines each athlete’s
academic record, trying to predict
whether he or she will be able to handle
college-level work and remain eligible.
Barber seemed on the verge of
not receiving certification by the
Pete HerZog
randel barber’s work in the classroom lifted him
to scholarship-eligible status.
clearinghouse.
Knowing his college future was on
the line, he went to work.
“I’ve seen him grow so much as a
person and as an athlete and a leader of
our program,” Cory Nenaber, Maricopa
head football coach, said.
“He took four online classes last
semester, on top of a full load in school,
to be able to raise his GPA. It’s such a
tribute to him, the work that he did on
his own and to get it done by Christmas,
which was his goal,” Nenaber said.
Barber registered for the online
classes in the middle of September,
completed his work before the holidays
and had a 3.5 GPA.
“That showed what he really
wanted, and how badly he wanted it,”
Nenaber said.
The soft-spoken Barber
understands the opportunity that his
hard academic work has given him,
and he seems ready for the challenge of
being a student athlete at the collegiate
level.
“At first I didn’t think I would be
able to do it,” he said. “I’m just grateful
that I had the chance, and was able to
pull it off.”
He said he knows college will be
more difficult than high school, but he
is ready.
“I think so. I just have to work hard
and do the assignments,” he said.
He plans to major in criminal
justice and work in the juvenile justice
system.

The boys
of spring
BY TOM GIBBONS
Ron Hudson and his neighbor, Ed
Wardzala, were attending a spring
training game a few years ago when
they realized working at a ballpark each
spring might have advantages.
“We wouldn’t have to pay $20 every
time we wanted to see a ballgame,’’
Hudson said.
Hudson, a retired principal and
teacher, and his Province neighbor are
enjoying their fourth season working at
Tempe Diablo Stadium, spring home of
the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
The Angels are one of 15 Major
League Baseball teams calling Arizona
home for spring training and playing
exhibition games through March in the
Cactus League. The games are played
in 10 ballparks, all within 60 miles of
Maricopa.
The Angels’ home park is closest
and features the top draw in the Cactus
League this season — first baseman Albert
Pujols. Pujols, considered the best
hitter in baseball for several years, led
the St. Louis Cardinals to the World
Series last fall, then signed a $254 million,
10-year contract with the Angels.
Hudson, whose duties have ranged
from watching the clubhouse while
players work out to helping keep the
beer plaza safe and sane, said Pujols
has been accommodating to fans
and autograph-seekers, particularly
youngsters.
“He’s a classy guy,’’ Hudson said,
adding many fans have traveled from
the Los Angeles area.
About 60 percent of fans who attend
Cactus League games are from out of
the area, said Brad Curtis, president of
the Diablos, a Tempe civic group, and
the Cactus League Association.
Attendance dropped from an
average of 7,436 per game in 2008 to
6,418 in 2009 after the recession hit.
It rose the past two seasons and the
league averaged 6,848 a game in 2011.
Ticket sales for Angels games were
running about 20 percent ahead of last
year’s pace, Curtis said before the first
game.
“There’s an uptick in most places,’’
he said.
For some, spring training offers a
little taste of what used to be home.
Michael Winer, 27, works in the city’s
Economic Development Department
and lived in Milwaukee most of his
life. He spent a year in Oklahoma and
moved to Maricopa in September.
He said he planned to go to Maryvale
to catch some Milwaukee Brewers
games. “I am really glad to get a chance
to do this,’’ he said.
Rudy Lopez, who works in the
Development Department Planning
Division, has worked for the city for
five years after going to school at ASU.
He grew up in San Francisco and as a
college student appreciated that his
hometown Giants played in nearby
Scottsdale.
“It felt good knowing they were just
down the road,’’ he said.
He plans to take in a few spring
training games.
“It only takes about 30 minutes
from Maricopa,’’ he said.
