Fructifications white, often spotted with pale yellow, be-<br />

coming subfuscous, very firm; peridium. 150-200 f thick, fibrous<br />

without, pseudoparenchymatous within; gleba at first white,<br />

becoming violaceous mixed with fuscous at maturity, cavities<br />

very small; spores hyaline, becoming golden <strong>and</strong> fuscous at<br />

maturity, 1-several-guttulate, ellipsoid, attenuate at each end;<br />

mucro free when young, becoming involved in the exospore<br />

which becomes almost round, 20-30 x 12-18 ,u, without sculpture,<br />

19-25 x 7-10 U.<br />

10. HYMENOGASTER pyriformis Zeller & Dodge, sp. nov.<br />

Fructificationes gregariae vel caespitosae, 1-2 cm. diametro metientes, pyriformes<br />

vel subglobosae, -albae, hypogeae, luteae vel bruunneae emersae, tactu caerules-<br />

centes, "drab" vel "olive-brown" siccatae, superficie laevi vel tomentulosa; basis<br />

sterilis prominens, inferne conica; caro fracta sectave caerulescens; peridium<br />

crassum in lateribus, tenuius superne, 200-400 a crassitudine, prosenchymaticum,<br />

superficie hyphis paucis magnis laxis; gleba grisea, caerulescens secta, fusca siccata,<br />

locellis parvis, irregularibus, e basi sterili radiantibus; septa 18-30 a crassitudine<br />

siccata prosenchymatica; basidia cylindrica, uni- vel bispora, sterigmatibus 4-8 x<br />

1.8-2 a; sporae magnitudine variabiles, 12-23 x 9-11 a, ellipsoideae vel obovoideae,<br />

rotundatae, rugis parvis, irregulariter longitudinalibus anastomosantibus, obscure<br />

brunneae. Odor terreus.<br />

Type: in Dodge <strong>and</strong> Zeller Herbaria.<br />

Fructifications gregarious to cespitose, 1-2 cm. in diameter,<br />

pyriform to subglobose, emersed or wholly hypogeous, white<br />

while hypogeous, yellowish-brown where exposed, turning blue<br />

when touched or bruised, drying drab to olive-brown, surface
