Frmetifications subspherical, 2-3 cm. in diameter, white,<br />

turning yellowish to light. buff, drying yellow-ochre or ochraceoaus-buff,<br />

surface innate-fibrous, drying rtgose; peridium<br />

thin, 18-30 l thick, hyaline, the outer part composed of loosely<br />

applied, yellowish hyphaei, the inner portion of more compact,<br />

stupose hyphae; gleba becoming fragile, Sudan brown to Argus<br />

brown, cavities irregular; septa thin, fragile, 12-25 P thick,<br />

composed of hyaline, thin-walled, parallel hyphae; basidia 2-<br />

spored, broad-eylindric, 11-13 x 15-18 ,a, sterigmata. short,<br />

about 2-3 JA long;' spores ellipsoid-citriform, apiculate, roughened<br />

by an evenly applied, alveolate utricie which extends to<br />

the base of the apiculus, dark brown (the young spores smooth,<br />

ellipsoid), 9.6-11.1 x 14.5-17 ,/f, including utricle.<br />

Common in the southern hemisphere, also in California <strong>and</strong><br />

Oregon. Under Quercuqs. October, in Oregon.<br />

The young spores, where no utricle is developed, are smooth,<br />

ellipsoid, with no apiculus but usually with a pedicel attached.<br />

In some apparently semi-mature spores the utricle is less<br />

closely applied above, having a flaring tendency.<br />
