Type: location unknown to us.<br />
Fructifications the size of a pea or smaller, reniform, amberyellow,<br />
smooth above; peridium scarcely a line thick, composed<br />
of very slender, gelified hyphae; gleba somewhat fleshy <strong>and</strong><br />
yellowish, cavities small but visible to the naked eye; septa<br />
yellow, composed of thin-walled, slender hyphae; basidia narrow,<br />
2-spored, not projecting much beyond the paraphyses;<br />
spores 16-20 x 8-10,ff, with a short, blunt apiculus, appendiculus<br />
1 x 1 L, exospore wrinkled, dark yellow.<br />
In s<strong>and</strong>y soil under Fagus. Hessen-Nassau, Germany.<br />
August to October.<br />
IThe spores are near those of H. lilacinus' Tul. but are narrower,<br />
-<strong>and</strong> the appendiculus is thinner.<br />
39. HYMENOGASTER occidentalis Zeller & Dodge, sp. nov.<br />
Fructificationes laeves, 1-2 cm. diametro metientes, subsphericae, rugosae vel sul-<br />
catae, "pale tan" rubro-maculatae recens, "pinkish buff" vel "clay color" sicca-<br />
tae; peridium byssoideum, stuposum, fibrillosum, hyalinum, 50-100 ,u crassitudine;<br />
gleba grisea, "snuff-brown " siccata, locellis magnis; septa fragilia, tenuia, 15-19 ,u<br />
(ad 74 /A hymeniis inclusis) crassitudine, prosenchymatica, sublutea siccata; basidia<br />
cylindrica, angusta, 30-34 x 4-5 A, 2- vel 4-spora; sporae ellipsoideae, sublatae, apic-<br />
ulatae vel rotundatae in aliquantulis sporis maturis, pedicello brevi, utriculo laevi,<br />
episporio verrucoso, 20-26 x 12-15 A; odor terreus.<br />
Type: in Zeller <strong>and</strong> Dodge Herbaria.<br />
Fructifications smooth to silky, 1-2 cm. in diameter, sulcate-<br />
rugose to subglobose, pale tan, flecked with small patches of<br />
pink, or red, drying pinkish-buff to clay-colored; peridium of<br />
a byssoid, stupose, or meshy fibrillose texture, hyaline, 50-100 u<br />
thick; gleba grayish, drying snuff-brown, cavities relatively<br />
large; septa brittle, thin, papery, 15-19 ,f thick (74 ,t including<br />
hymenia), prosenchymatous, hyaline to yellowish when dry;<br />
basidia cylindrical, narrow, 30-34 x 4-5 ,/, 2- or 4-spored; spores<br />
mostly ellipsoid, slightly broad-apiculate, sometimes maturing<br />
with a broad rounded tip, pedicel notched, short, surface warted<br />
(warts mostly retrorse) <strong>and</strong> covered by a smooth utricle,<br />
20-26 x 12-15 u. Odor earthy.
