Type collected in sandy soil in mixed woods near Auburn, Alabama, January 1, 1901, Mrs. F. S.<br />

Earle.<br />

HABITAT: In sandy soil in oak woods or mixed woods.<br />

DISTRIBUTION: Alabama.<br />

Pileus depressed, gregarious, 5-9 cm. broad; surface dry, glabrous, fumoso-avellaneous,<br />

margin often irregular; context white, brittle, having a sweet, nutty taste, but no odor;<br />

lamellae sinuate, narrow, crowded, uneven, brittle, white to pallid; spores ellipsoid, smooth,<br />

hyaline, 7-9X5-6.5 it; stipe subconcolorous, dry, glabrous, fleshy, stuffed or hollow, larger at<br />

the base, 4 cm. long, 0.75-2 cm. thick.<br />

TYPE LOCALITY: France.<br />

HABITAT: On the ground among weeds or in woods.<br />

DISTRIBUTION: <strong>North</strong>eastern United States; also in Europe.<br />

65. Melanoleuca <strong>Vol</strong>kertii Murrill, sp. nov.<br />

Pileus convex to plane, at length depressed, somewhat irregular, thin, fragile, gregarious,<br />

reaching 7 cm. broad; surface smooth, glabrous, dry, avellaneous at the center, fading out to<br />

nearly white at the margin, the cuticle sometimes splitting radially; margin thin, entire or<br />

lobed, at first incurved, at length expanded; lamellae sinuate, rather crowded, of medium<br />

breadth, fragile, whitish, becoming subfulvous on drying; spores ellipsoid, smooth, hyaline,<br />

4-6 X 3-4 p ; stipe usually short and thick, equal, smooth, glabrous, pallid or pale-avellaneous,<br />

spongy-stuffed, 3-4 cm. long, 1-2.5 cm. thick.<br />

Type collected on the ground in woods east of the New York Botanical Garden, New York<br />

City, October 8, 1911, W. A. Murrill &• E. C. <strong>Vol</strong>kert.<br />

DISTRIBUTION: Known only from the type locality.<br />

Pileus rather thin, firm, dry, convex, obtuse or subumbonate, 4-7 cm. broad; surface<br />

virgate with innate brownish fibrils, varying in color from grayish-brown to blackish-brown,<br />

sometimes with greenish or yellowish tints, often a little darker in the center; context<br />

white or whitish, taste acrid; lamellae broad, close, rounded behind, adnexed, whitish or<br />

yellowish; spores ellipsoid, 6-7X5 ¡u; stipe generally short, equal, solid, silky, slightly mealy or<br />

pruinose at the top, white or slightly tinged with yellow, 5-7 cm. long, 6-12 mm. thick.<br />

TYPE LOCALITY: Massachusetts.<br />

HABITAT: On the ground in woods.<br />

DISTRIBUTION: Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania.<br />

Pileus thin, expanded, the center depressed or subumbilicate, 12-24 mm. broad; surface<br />

dry, blackish-brown, glabrous, margin deflexed or involute; lamellae emarginate, close, whitish<br />

tinged with blue, edges often dentate; spores broadly ellipsoid or subglobose, uninucleate, 4•5<br />

X4M; stipe short, slightly thickened at the base, brown, tomentose below, solid, 1.5-2.5 cm.<br />

long, 4-6 mm. thick.<br />

TYPE LOCALITY: Rooks County, Kansas.<br />

HABITAT: On old grass roots in a sandy prairie pasture.<br />

DISTRIBUTION: Kansas.<br />

68. Melanoleuca praecox Murrill, sp. nov.<br />

Pileus becoming plane and at length depressed, solitary, 4 cm. broad; surface dry, avel-<br />

laneous, shining, minutely imbricate, margin irregular or somewhat lobed; context whitish,<br />

mild, pleasant to the taste; lamellae sinuate, broad, nearly plane, rather crowded, several
