73. Melanoleuca angustifolia Murrill, sp. nov.<br />

Pileus fleshy, rather thin, conic-convex to plane with a broad, conic umbo, subcespitose,<br />

reaching 9 cm. broad; surface slimy-viscid when wet, smooth, glabrous, brownish-yellow with a<br />

lilac tint at the center, fading out to a broad, white, marginal zone; cuticle separable, margin<br />

thin, white, entire, indexed, especially on drying; context firm, white, rather thin, with pleasant<br />

odor and nutty flavor; lamellae plane in mass, very narrow and much crowded, sinuate, several<br />

times inserted, white, slightly yellowish when seen at some angles; spores ellipsoid, smooth,<br />

hyaline, granular, 6-7 X 3-4/¿; stipe equal or nearly so, smooth, dry, slightly pruinose, milk-<br />

white, reaching 9 cm. long and 1.5 cm. thick.<br />

Type collected on the ground in woods on the bank of the Bronx River in the New York Botan-<br />

ca Garden, August 30, 1911, W. A. Murrill.<br />

DISTRIBUTION: Known only from the type locality.<br />

Pileus thin, campanulate, obtuse, 5-7.5 cm. broad; surface glabrous, slightly viscid when<br />

moist, greenish-yellow; context white; lamellae crowded, free or slightly adnexed, white; spores<br />

broadly ellipsoid, 5X4/*; stipe equal, firm, glabrous, white, 2.5-5 cm. long, 6-<strong>10</strong> mm. thick.<br />

TYPE LOCALITY : Catskill Mountains, New York.<br />

HABITAT: Woods.<br />

DISTRIBUTION: Known only from the type locality.<br />

Pileus broadly convex or. nearly plane, 7.5-<strong>10</strong> cm. broad; surface glabrous, viscid, pale-<br />

alutaceous, generally soiled with adhering particles of earth carried up in its growth, margin<br />

irregular, often wavy; context white, with no decided odor; lamellae thin, crowded, slightly<br />

adnexed, white, not spotted or changeable; spores minute, subglobose, 3 ¡i long; stipe equal,<br />

short, solid, white, floccose-squamulose at the apex, 2.5-4 cm. long, 12-16 mm. thick.<br />

TYPS LOCALITY: Catskill Mountains, New York.<br />

HABITAT: Thin woods.<br />

DISTRIBUTION: Known only from the type locality.<br />

Pileus fleshy, convex, becoming plane or centrally depressed, obtuse, solitary or sub-<br />

cespitose, 7.5-12.5 cm. broad; surface viscid when moist, smooth or dotted with granular<br />

squamules on the disk, pale-pink or rose-red suffused at times with yellowish stains, margin<br />

usually paler, involute and minutely downy in the young plant; context white, sometimes tinged<br />

with red, taste mild; lamellae subdistant, rounded behind or subdecurrent, white, often be-<br />

coming red-spotted with age; spores ellipsoid, 6-7.5 X4M; stipe solid, firm, dry, white, often<br />

reddish below, squamulose at the apex, 2.5-5 cm. long, 12-16 mm. thick.<br />

TYPE LOCALITY: Carniola.<br />

HABITAT: On the ground under oaks or in mixed woods.<br />

DISTRIBUTION: <strong>North</strong>eastern United States; also in Europe.<br />

Pileus convex to expanded', gregarious, reaching 4-8 cm. broad; surface smooth, viscid,<br />

light-pinkish-brown when shaded, becoming dark-brown where fully exposed, margin at length<br />

slightly sulcate; context whitish, unchanging, mild; lamellae crowded, rather narrow, sinuate,<br />

white stained with reddish, becoming darker with age; spores ellipsoid, smooth, hyaline, 6-7 X
