EXPLANATION OF THE LASIX PROGRAM
After careful study and consultation with Ontario Horsemen’s groups, racetrack operators and veterinarians, Agriculture Canada and the
Ontario Racing Commission passed legislation allowing the controlled (or supervised) administration of furosemide, more commonly called
“Lasix”. “Lasix” is used to alleviate the symptoms of exercise induced pulmonary hemorrhaging in racing horses.
Horses will undergo an endoscopic examination of the trachea by a veterinarian licensed by the Ontario Racing Commission and endorsed
by an official veterinarian before being allowed on the medication list. Once qualified, horses will be treated with “Lasix” within four hours
plus or minus 15 minutes of a scheduled race in a secure retention area under the supervision of racing officials.
All horses on “Lasix” must remain on the program for a minimum of 100 days while racing in this jurisdiction.
