The 2012-2013 Fire Prevention Poster Contest is sponsored jointly by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs Division of Fire Safety and the Miguel Silva, first grade, Burling School. Keyonna Bowles, second grade, Roosevelt School. Keyonna’s poster was chosen to compete at the county level. Jazcenya Gonzalez, fourth grade, Burling School. January 2013 ALL AROUND PENNSAUKEN Page 21 Barr 2012 Recipient Of Nicgorski Memorial Award Pennsauken resident Robin Barr is the 2012 recipient of the annual Walt “Wodgie” Nicgorski Memorial Award. According its inscription, the award goes to an individual “who has demonstrated untiring dedication and unselfishness for the betterment of PYAA soccer.” “Robin has made significant contributions to PYAA soccer for many years, serving as both a coach and the sports pro - gram’s president,” explained Walt Nicgorski, son of the late Wodgie Nicgorski, who passed away in 1987. “His tireless work with the children of our community is a testament to the impact PYAA and its volunteers have has on our young people and is a fitting tribute to my father’s legacy.” The Walt “Wodgie” Nicgorski Memorial Award has been given out to PYAA soccer volunteers for over 24 years. Nicgorski, a longtime resident of Pennsauken, was a staunch and dedicated PYAA volunteer, assisting with both the soccer and baseball programs. The sports complex on Powell and Collins avenues is also named in his memory. Support For Sandy Hook Elementary continued from page 1 “As always, we continue to work closely with the Township’s emergency responders to carefully review, revise, and practice our safety plans,” explained Martinez in her letter to parents. “During the summer, we created a Safety and Security Task Force. Together, we have been closely monitoring our security procedures and preparedness in responding to emergencies.” Martinez also stated that schools regularly practice a variety of emergency drills during the school day and that the public schools throughout Pennsauken have camera monitors and buzzers for visiting procedures. Helping To Deal With Tragedy In addition to a message on school security, the Pennsauken School District offered tips from the Traumatic Loss Coalitions for Youth to help some of Pennsauken’s younger residents regain a sense of safety and security. Such guidelines included: • Monitoring the amount of children’s exposure to the media coverage of the event • Providing children with accurate, age-appropriate information about the event to avoid rumors or misinformation • Taking the concerns of your children Coming to Historic Merchantville February 2013 DECOTIQUE seriously, as they oftentimes feel more vulnerable than adults • Explaining the importance of safety, while reassuring them that they are safe in school • Keeping a regular routine to help provide a sense of security • Spending time together as a family and connecting with friends to provide a safety net for children • Allowing some time for extra comforting, while children deal with upsetting circumstances A Closing Thought On The Tragedy At the time that this article was written, the community of Newtown, CT began to say goodbye to precious members of their families and the educators who sacrificed their very lives to keep students safe. As the dialog about the underlying reasons behind this tragedy begins to be discussed by federal officials and communities throughout the nation, the one thing that everyone can truly take from this horrible event is this: that life is precious and fragile. We should take this opportunity to hug our loved ones a little tighter, to appreciate our time together and to make each moment count. For tomorrow is never promise, only a possibility.
