An Interview With Cross Country Runners: Eric Butler and Briana Roberts
By Billy Wright, PHS Athletic Director
BW: Eric, first of all congratulations on
qualifying for the state cross country
championships.
E:Thank you.
BW: Do you realize that you are the
first PHS cross country runner to advance
to the states since 1983?
E: I knew it had been a while but not
that long. Almost 30 years, wow!
BW: You are the school record holder
in the 800 meters in spring track. Cross
country is 3.1 miles and a far cry from
the half. What do you attest that wide
range of skill to?
E: Hard work, dedication and a lot of
support from my coach and teammates.
BW: Briana, unfortunately, you missed
qualifying for the states by one place
with your 11th place finish at the sectionals.
I know you worked hard for this;
disappointed I guess?
B: In the beginning I was, but my teammates
reminded me I have three more
years and a very bright future.
BW: Do you know that a female has
never qualified for states at PHS?
B: Yes, Coach Zimmerman told me
that and I am even more determined to
make it the next three years.
BW: This sport demands an enormous
amount of self discipline and a lot of
miles run. How many miles a week do
you average?
B: 35 to 40 miles.
E: 50 to 55 miles.
BW:What is the longest you’ve ever run?
E:Two and a half hours!
B:An hour and a half!
BW:Guys, talk for a moment about the
team camaraderie in an individual sport.
E: For it to be an individual sport, the
team and the coaches are like a family.
While the boys and girls are separate, we
do a lot together and that makes it a lot
of fun.
B: We are a family. The coaches push
you hard but they make you enjoy it.
BW: Most people don’t find running
