Pennsauken Grieves, Shows Support For Sandy Hook Elementary Look!
By Frank Sinatra, AAP Editor
On Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, the unthinkable
happened. Twenty young students
and a half dozen educators in Newtown,
CT lost their lives during an event so tragic,
mere words cannot reflect the horror and
sadness an entire nation feels. One hundred
and sixty-six miles away, the
Pennsauken community shares in this sorrow,
offering prayers and signs of support.
As a way to facilitate the communal
grieving process, and to provide a symbol
of hope for the future where tragedies like
this no longer occur, the evergreen tree
outside of the Pennsauken Township
Building was turned into a memorial for
those who lost their lives during the
tragedy in Connecticut. The tree was decorated
with 20 angels and six Christmas
bells for the students and teachers lost at
Sandy Hook Elementary.
“This tree is just one small gesture to
those currently dealing with this tragedy in
Connecticut,” says Township Committeeman
John Kneib, who served as the town’s
mayor during 2012. “In Pennsauken and
communities like ours all across the region,
our hearts go out to all those affected
by this tragic loss of life.”
Many residents took an opportunity to
visit the tree and expressed their thoughts
on the memorial. “The tree looks beautiful
[with] the angels and the bells with green
bows, [which are] Sandy Hook’s school colors,”
says Pennsauken Resident Donna
Zuber. “When I was there, I heard a clang
from a bell. It brought to mind the line from
‘It’s A Wonderful Life,’ and angels receiving
their wings. The heavens have 26 more
angels with wings to watch over us.”
The memorial tree remained decorated
throughout the holidays. During that time,
Pennsauken residents were encouraged to
use the tree as a way to not only pay their
respects, but also leave behind a note of
support or a memento to express their
Goodwill Hosts Holiday Party For Disabled Clients Pennsauken BIG Council
Launches 2013 Membership Drive
Goodwill’s Sheltered Workshop/Out -
sourcing Center employs a workforce
of local residents with severe disabilities
who perform light industrial outsourcing
tasks for companies like
Comcast and Subaru. This provides
them with the opportunity to learn,
to work and to earn a paycheck.
Since many come from families struggling
to make ends meet or live in
group homes, Goodwill hosted a festive
holiday celebration for them with
supporters “adopting clients” for the
day at Camden County Boathouse in Pennsauken. This year, 150 clients joined the celebration
and received a gift from Santa Claus himself! In addition, the event featured a traditional holiday
feast, dee-jay, dancing and the spreading of plenty of goodwill. To see a video of this heartwarming
event, visit All Around Pennsauken’s Facebook page.
Commitment to Safety
In a message sent home
with all students, Pennsauken
School Superintendent Marilyn
commitment to keeping
both students and staff safe.
Not resting on the laurels of the accomplishments
of 2012, the Business, Industry,
and Government Council of Pennsauken
Township has launched its 2013 membership
drive. The goal: increasing both the
size of the organization and its impact on
the local community.
Last year, the B.I.G. Council experienced
record involvement from local
companies and organizations, increasing
paid memberships by over 50 percent
from 2011. With the start of the New Year,
“We’re excited about how quickly our
still ask ourselves, ‘How can we do more?’
By continuing to grow our organization,
E D I T O R ’ S
D
ESK
By Frank Sinatra,
AAP Editor
The Mayans
were wrong. The
world did not
spin off its axis
and hurtle into
Frank Sinatra
the Sun; giant
space aliens took a wrong turn at the Van
Allen Belt and missed invading our
planet by a few parsecs; and the zombie
invasion got postponed until summer, because
the mindless horde craving human
flesh was just dead tired. Regardless of
your world-ending catastrophe of choice,
Dec. 21 came and went, we all counted
down to midnight on New Year’s Eve,
and we find ourselves faced with another
365 days of opportunity.
Opportunity; it’s what we all think
A Word From The Editor: New Opportunities For 2013
about this time of year. You can’t help but
look back at 2012, take stock of what
you’ve done, and see how 2013 can be better.
We do it personally. We do it professionally.
And if we’re lucky, 50 percent of
what we plan to do actually sticks. So with
a little bit of regret, I have to admit I may
have ruined the bell curve on this one.
My first year as editor of All Around
Pennsauken has been even better than
I expected. Writing about my home
town is really an awesome job. I’ve had
some really great experiences, interviewing
professional baseball players at the
first-ever Bailey Bowl; getting a front
row seat to listen to pop-culture icon
Stan Lee; and talking with students from
Pennsauken High School as they
prepped an experiment headed to the
International Space Station. There were
also some stories that really made your
heart heavy with sadness, like talking
with the grieving parents of Michael
Hagan; the loss of AAP volunteer photographer
Marie Giebel; and saying
goodbye to education pioneer Howard
M. Phifer.
If you’ve noticed, the one thing in
common with these stories, other than
their geography, is that people are the
focus of each one. It’s the people in our
community, their trials and tribulations,
which not only make the stories interesting,
but also highlight how great our
town is. Having the opportunity to share
these stories with you is a very special
gift, and I look forward to another year
of writing about the people that make
Pennsauken what it is today.
Speaking of people, I have an oppor-
HOME BUYER’S SEMINAR – Saturdays at 10:00am
paper has wonderful contributors who
share a true passion for our town. We try
to offer a little something for everyone
in our paper. These talented men and
women make it look easy. I also wanted
to single out All Around Pennsauken’s
great publishing staff. There have been
some late nights shared in order to get
the newspaper to the printer on time,
and there’s not a better bunch to burn
the midnight oil with.
For 2013, we at All Around Penn -
sauken look forward to making the most
of our opportunity to share the stories,
both happy and sad, that you find in
Pennsauken every day. We encourage
you to continue to share your story ideas
at aap@twp.pennsauken.nj.us. E-mail us
your wedding announcements, anniver-
saries, special accomplishments, and upcoming
events; anything you can’t wait
to shout from the rooftops. We also love
to hear about former Pennsauken residents
who have gone out into the world
and made a name for themselves. Who
knows? We just might be able to use it
for the next edition. Also, be sure to follow
us on Facebook; there’s only so
much you can fit on newspaper print,
and you’ll learn about many other things
happening in town and our surrounding
community on a daily basis.
In closing, my New Year’s wish to my
fellow Pennsauken residents and Merchantville
neighbors is that you and your
loved ones find all the great opportunities
that await you in 2013. It’s going to
be a very exciting time; I can’t wait to
share it with you.
Pennsauken’s Historic Houses Offer Glimpse Into Town’s Past
By Alan Gibson, AAP Contributor
Pennsauken’s historic houses, the
Griffith Morgan House and Burrough-
Dover House, recently opened their
doors to show visitors what colonial life
was like in Pennsauken.
The Burrough-Dover House was built
in 1710 and named for both its original
owners, Samuel and Hannah Burrough,
and its final owner, William Dover. The
house was occupied until 1960, then purchased
by the Pennsauken Historical Society
in 1964.
Members of the Historical Society
were on hand to explain the history of
the Burrough-Dover House, as well as
serve refreshments. The basement contains
a small museum, showing artifacts
from the history of Pennsauken.
The Griffith Morgan House was built
in about 1693, named for its first owner,
Griffith Morgan. Morgan, a sailor, built
his house on the Pennsauken Creek and
Delaware River.
Costumed reenactors were on hand to
give tours of the house. The museum on
the third floor showed artifacts from
house, as well as other items of
Pennsauken history.
Christine MacDonald Schum was on
hand to demonstrate colonial cooking.
Using the building’s hearth, she served visitors
a typical colonial meal of ham pottage,
a soup of ham, Swiss chard, and potatoes.
She also made flat bread and fried apples
in honey, butter, and cinnamon.
How The Past Is
Present In Pennsauken
By Robert Fisher-Hughes, AAP Columnist
and Amateur Historian
The story of a town is the story of its
people, past and present. And if, as it has
been observed since Socrates, an unexamined
life is not worth living, then a
town must preserve a sense of its history
to be worthy of its citizenry. How we do
that in Pennsauken is my subject.
The continuing project to give meaningful
expression to Pennsauken Township’s
history began in earnest a little
more than 50 years ago, during the
statewide preparations to celebrate the
300th anniversary of the founding of
New Jersey as a British colony. Throughout
the state, local residents began to
look about their towns to find the linkages
on their landscape and in their
records between their municipal story
and the story of New Jersey, and by extension,
to the story of America.
In Pennsauken, a small number of early
structures that preserved their historic
character in their very architecture, as well
as in local memory, became a rallying
point for all kinds of townspeople who
wanted Pennsauken to claim its heritage.
Support from the statewide campaign to
mark the tercentenary and similar efforts
in surrounding towns helped recruit many
talented people of good will, from the
Township Committee to teachers, lawyers
to school children. Volunteer time, small
but numerous financial contributions, talent
and expertise were exerted with enthusiasm
in the project of local history.
Sometimes their enthusiasm outpaced
their historical skill, but they started something
that continues to this day.
Their first focus was on the colonial
farmhouse known as the Burrough-
Dover House. To continue the effort beyond
1964, the year of the tercentenary,
an organization was formed to carry on
the work at the old house and throughout
the town: The Pennsauken Historical
Society. Two committed members of the
movement began to apply their particular
talents to produce a written and illustrated
history of Pennsauken Township.
They were school teachers Jack Fichter
and Edmund Halber.
Other ambitions for local history were
soon identified, some successful and others
not. The badly battered and abandoned
Griffith Morgan House was made
the objective of another historical organization,
the Griffith Morgan Committee,
and restoration based on existing records
and best practices began. Efforts to find
LOOKING BACK
IN HISTORY
remnants of other historical buildings
such as the J. Dunbar Hylton home on Mt.
Pleasant were less successful, as were projects
to locate the site of an early English
fort said to have existed near Pennsauken
Creek. Efforts to save one of the earliest
schools in the Township and to establish a
small, dedicated museum of local history
were also not successful.
However, the organized efforts to preserve
local history and share it with the
community went on, bolstered by the
new recruitments of volunteers, energized
by the visible progress at the historic
houses, and by the potential
promised by other ambitious projects.
Our community’s history was again
highlighted when we celebrated our municipal
centenary in 1992, and when a photographic
history of Pennsauken, edited by
Kathleen J. Crane, was published in 1997.
Encouraged by state legislation to do
so, Pennsauken included a “historic
preservation element” in its master plan,
which is intended to guide the long-range
development of the Township. To fulfill
its stated commitment, the Township
continued to provide help in various
forms to the Pennsauken Historical Society
and the Griffith Morgan Committee
after the transfer of the respective
properties. Assistance with maintaining
the historic properties and their grounds,
with publicity for community events at
the houses, shuttle transportation between
the houses during events, and visits
by Township officials as well as county
and state-level officials are all contributions
to the value of historic preservation
in Pennsauken Township. The support of
the Township and the county, as well as
the local business community from the
earliest days to today, have been crucial
to the stability and vitality of the work of
local historical preservation.
If thanks and appreciation are due to
the Township administration, however,
the members of the community who volunteer
and support the historical organizations
of the Township, whether by
their membership or by their participation,
are the organizations themselves.
Both the Pennsauken Historical Society
and the Griffith Morgan Committee
have always been and continue to be allvolunteer
organizations: a labor of love
and of community spirit.
WAGSWORLD The Road Paved With New Year’s Resolutions
By Bob Wagner
AAP Columnist
Faced with the daunting task of
documenting my New Year’s resolutions,
I have once again retreated to the
safety of my garage. It is quiet here, and
dark. It is dark because my son’s New
Year’s resolution of 2002, to put up nice
shiny new lights in my garage, is still
unresolved. But I dare not complain.
Because, as I look around me, I see piles
and clumps of stuff. Projects and collections
of a thousand promises to the good
wife to clean up, fix, or organize, made over
years and years, with all good intentions.
Grandmom Ethel, now long de-
ceased, was fond of telling me that “the
road to hell is paved with good intentions.”
She was, of course, correct.
At the time of the writing of this article,
I should be out Christmas shopping. But
I am caught up in the clutter of my personal
version of “flat surface syndrome.”
Every spare flat surface holds treasure.
And since the recent opening of that
huge men’s toy store, known to some as
Harbor Freight, and to others as “the first
step on the stairs to hell,” I keep finding
bags of tools, unopened. I could give my
wife a few of these trinkets for her stocking.
The electric tester is cute, and in a nice
holiday red. Add a tape measure, new
screw drivers, a block and tackle with 30
feet of rope, and a high speed, multi angle,
For a second year, a group of knitters
from the Evening Membership Department
of the Woman’s Club of Merchantville,
aka the “Knit Wits,” are
making items to donate to people in
need. This year, the recipients are the
homeless, jobless and working poor who
visit the Cathedral Kitchen, the
renowned non-profit that has been serving
meals to the poor of Camden since
1976 and is the largest emergency food
provider in the city. Three hundred and
nineteen scarves, 28 hats, 35 headbands,
and 40 pairs of gloves were already
dropped off in time for the holidays. The
“Knit Wits” are in need of yarn to continue
their knitting projects. If anyone
Community
involvement is vital
to sustaining local commerce and small
businesses in today’s economic climate
Ellis also explained that growing
B.I.G. Council membership increases the
opportunity to network with a wide variety
of different business types.
“We’ve always been a diverse organization.
Our members come from so
many industries: from real estate to
banking and health care to auto repair.
It really creates an environment conducive
to business partnerships. We’ve
always said, if you need to find something
for your business, you can find it
right here in our community.”
While the membership drive lasts all
Building On Past Successes
In the past three years, the B.I.G.
has a substantial body of
work to build from.
“Every success our organization has allows
us to do even more in our community,”
says Ellis. “With everything that
Avoid Falls, Injury Due To Snow And Ice By Being Cautious, Prepared
Winter has arrived, and the cold,
snowy and icy weather that goes with it
is soon to follow. Falls account for more
than one million injuries in the U.S. annually.
The most common type of fall is
known as the “slip and fall,” which often
happens when a surface is not cleared of
snow or ice.
“Every winter the hazards of driving
in snow and icy conditions are noted, but
rarely is walking on snow and ice addressed,”
said Martin B. Tirado, CAE, executive
director of the Snow & Ice
Management Association. “Slipping and
falling while walking accounts for a large
number of winter-related injuries and
can have an impact on the quality of life
for the injured person.”
SIMA, the national nonprofit organization
representing the snow removal industry,
has some tips on safe winter
walking.
TIP #1: Wear proper footwear. Proper
footwear should place the entire foot
on the surface of the ground and have
visible treads. Avoid a smooth sole and
opt for a heavy treaded shoe with a flat
bottom.
TIP #2: Accessorize to see and be seen.
Wear sunglasses so that you can see in
the reflective light of the snow. Also, wear
a bright coat or scarf so that drivers can
easily see you.
TIP #3: Plan ahead. While walking on
snow or ice on sidewalks or in parking
lots, walk consciously. Instead of looking
down, look up and see where your feet
will move next to anticipate ice or an uneven
surface. Occasionally scan from left
to right to ensure you are not in the way
of vehicles or other hazards.
TIP #4: Make sure you can hear. While
seeing the environment is important, you
also want to be sure you can hear approaching
traffic and other noises. Avoid
listening to music or engaging in conversation
that may prevent you from hearing
oncoming traffic or snow removal
equipment.
TIP #5: Anticipate ice. Be wary of thin
sheets of ice that may appear as wet
pavement (black ice). Often ice will appear
in the morning, in shady spots or
where the sun shines during the day and
melted snow refreezes at night.
TIP #6:Walk steps slowly. When walking
Redefine Your Beauty
Tai Couture Salon is a haven of sophistication, beauty,
and elegance. Our goal is to integrate a relaxing
salon experience while considering the needs of our
guest through culture, imagination, and innovation.
down steps, be sure to grip handrails
firmly and plant your feet securely on
each step.
TIP #7: Enter a building carefully. When
you get to your destination such as
school, work, shopping center, etc., be
sure to look at the floor as you enter the
building. The floor may be wet with
melted snow and ice.
TIP #8: Be careful when you shift your
weight. When stepping off a curb or getting
into a car, be careful since shifting
your weight may cause an imbalance and
result in a fall.
TIP #9: Avoid taking shortcuts. Shortcuts
are a good idea if you are in a hurry, but
may be a bad idea if there is snow and ice
on the ground. A shortcut path may be
treacherous because it is likely to be located
where snow and ice removal is not
possible.
TIP #10:Look up. Be careful about what
you walk under. Injuries also can result
from falling snow/ice as it blows, melts, or
breaks away from awnings, buildings, etc.
Following these tips will help ensure
that you survive the snow and ice season
safely. For more snow and ice removal
How The Past Is Present In Pennsauken
continued from page 6
Today the involvement of the community,
you and your neighbors, is more
important than ever, and can take many
forms. Simply attending scheduled
events, becoming a dues-paying member,
playing historically-appropriate music or
teaching children how our ancestors
lived their lives, even helping to with the
upkeep of the old houses; all these help
the continuing project of preserving our
local history. Planning new projects, writing
for newsletters, sealing envelopes or
writing grant proposals are all ways to
contribute, as are becoming an officer to
guide the future of our history.
You can find out more about the
Pennsauken Historical Society and Griffith
Morgan Committee if you attend
their meetings. The Pennsauken Historical
Society meets the third Tuesday of
the month, and the Griffith Morgan
month. You can also find announcements
In little over a year, the fiftieth anniversary
of the local history movement
in Pennsauken Township, part of a larger
movement throughout the state of New
Jersey, will be here. Preparations to celebrate
will be made throughout the coming
months. Other events that will shape
and be shaped by our local historical organizations
are coming as well; such as
the expected opening of the new
Pennsauken transit station on Derousse
Avenue, with historical themes and images
incorporated into the design; the ongoing
project to include historical as well
as natural interpretation in the transformation
of Petty’s Island into a publically
accessible refuge; an anniversary of a
uniquely American entertainment institution
that was pioneered here in
Pennsauken; the progress of the movement
to have Pennsauken Township nationally
recognized for its monument to
the founder of the national Labor Day
holiday; and new, regional initiatives underway
to present a broader picture of our
local history throughout the entire county.
Gifts Of The Heart Are True
Hallmarks Of The Season
As December was drawing
to a close and the deadline
for my January column was
upon me, I was hoping to be
inspired by something other
than New Year’s resolutions.
And so, in almost a magical
way, I was. All it took was a
short drive around the corner
to Bethel Ave. and Rogers.
To get the full impact of
this story we have to turn the
clocks back to Oct. 29, 2012, the day Hurricane
Sandy struck our fair city.
For most of us it was an inconvenience;
power outages went on for a few
days and that was about it. Others less
fortunate had their homes destroyed as
trees fell randomly, and families were displaced,
and heartsick.
In our home, on the eve of the storm,
we heard a not-so-far-away HUGE
crash. Although I was curious to see what
it was, I was urged by my less curious, and
much smarter, husband to stay inside the
house and remain safe.
The following day, when the storm
had died down considerably, we took a
walk around the neighborhood and
there, right around the corner from us,
was the reason for that huge crash. A
tremendously large tree, by all appearances
at least 100 years old, totally uprooted,
right there in the middle of
Bethel Ave. A police car was guarding
the area, cones and caution tape were in
place, and all we could do was look in
amazement at what Mother Nature can
do when she’s all riled up.
Days passed, and the cones and tape
remained. A few days after that, workers
began to remove the debris from Bethel
Ave. Two weeks after the storm, all that
was left on the side of the street was this
rather large stump, still surrounded by
cones and caution tape.
Traffic soon resumed in a normal pattern
down Bethel, but I noticed it was a
slower one. As I drove down the street,
the cars ahead of me would almost come
to a halt in front of the old stump. I even
saw some people walking by and stopping,
just standing there.
As a writer, I always wonder why people
do what they do and what they could
be thinking. And by the looks on many
of those faces, I imagined they were coming
to grips with what just happened,
stopping to look and say a prayer for
those less fortunate, or maybe they were
By Judith Kristen
AAP Columnist
Pennsauken’s “Hurricane Sandy Tree,” a symbol of
joy and hope for the holidays and for the New Year.
just curious to see what was on the business
end of a hundred-year-old tree.
My own focus immediately turned to
our dear friends in Staten Island, Lorraine
and Des, who lost everything. There is
nothing left for them but memories.
Many of us in Pennsauken are very connected
to people in both the northern end
of our state and in New York; we know
people who are still without a place to call
their own. Many lives were lost, and animals
were left injured and homeless.
And every time I saw that old tree
stump there on the corner of Bethel and
Rogers, a new place in my heart was
touched.
Another week went by, and soon
Thanksgiving was upon us. On Black Friday,
as I drove down Bethel Ave., I noticed
something was different. The
caution tape that surrounded the
“Sandy” tree stump was now draped
over it like Christmas garland, complete
with a big, full bow, there for all to see in
its stunning yellow and black glory.
As I rode by it the next day, I noticed
there were a few more ornaments on it.
Then I rode by again later that evening
and there were a few more. So in the spirit
of things, I drove home and got some of
that green and silver garland we had, and
draped it over what was left of the tree.
This isn’t a gorgeous pine tree like the
one in Washington or the one that graces
Rockefeller Center, this is a real symbol
of hope!
Sadly, to some people I’m sure it will
mean nothing as they drive by. They
might even think, “Who’s crazy enough
to bother to decorate that funky old tree
stump?” But to me and many others in
our fair neighborhood, it’s a genuinely
beautiful and joy-filled Christmas tree.
The eyes of love and hope will always
make the difference!
And then in the days that followed
there were even more decorations, Santa
Pennsauken Schools Make Grand Entrance In Holiday Parade
Families lined the streets of
From Pennsauken to outer space and
back again; the experiment created by
two Pennsauken High School students
as part of a special program designed to
inspire the next generation of scientists
has returned from the International
Space Station. Michelle Wan and Lacy
Smith, the PHS seniors who developed
the experiment, were eager to see and
record the results of their hard work.
The two students created an experiment
using chicken bones designed to
test the effect of uric acid on the human
body in space. Wan and Smith painstakingly
removed both the test and control
samples, recorded their observations and
weighed the samples. The initial results:
the test tube sample that spent time in
space deteriorated at a faster rate than
the control sample, confirming Lacy’s
thoughts on the experiment.
“I thought [the decay] would be faster
in space,” explained Smith. “Something
just told me that’s what was going to
happen.”
Both students expressed hope that
the data from the experiment might not
only help the astronauts during long-
Nov. 24. Pennsauken Schools were
proud to be a part of this event. Each
school was represented and carried a
Superintendent Martinez with students
and faculty from Baldwin
School before the parade.
The students of Fine School enjoyed
participating in the parade.
term missions in space, but also be used
The PHS project was made possible
through the Student Spaceflight Experiments
Program, a U.S. national science,
school banner provided by the
Pennsauken Alliance Against Substance
Abuse (PASA).
Burling School students and staff
were dressed for the “Night Before
Christmas” as they walked along
with their mascot.
These smiling faces show what a
wonderful time everyone had walking
in the holiday parade.
Pennsauken High School Experiment Headed To
Michelle Han and Lacy Smith, two Pennsauken High School seniors, record the
data from their science experiment that just returned from the International
Space Station. PHS Teacher Peter Woodcock helps supervise the process.
gives typically 300 to 1,000 students the
ability to design and propose real experiments
Space Station.
Phifer Middle School News
Congratulations to Mrs. Fishers’ eighth grade science students from
Phifer Middle School, who are finalists in the Student Spaceflight Experiments
Program (SSEP) Mission 3 to the International Space Station.
These students will be testing to see if microgravity has an effect on
the rate at which egg shells decompose when placed in an acid. The
students will be conducting the experiment on Earth at the same time
as in space.
Delair School Receives Visit From Author
On Nov. 14, the students of Delair
School were treated to a visit from a children’s
author courtesy of the PTA.
Author Chrysa Smith, came to Delair
to talk about her career as an author, and
to let the students know about her new
book, “The Well Bred Book,” an adventure
about Groundhog Day.
This book is the fourth of a series of
self-published books under the series:
“The Adventures of the Poodle Posse.”
The first book contains two tales: The
Case of the Missing Steak Bone and
Who Let the Dogs Out? That book won
a Mom’s Choice Award for excellence in
Juvenile Fiction. Her next two books in
the series were, “The Princess and the
reading this series is grade two and up.
The students also had the opportunity
to purchase any of Smith’s books and
have them signed by the author.
This was a wonderful experience for
everyone.
As Seen In The Penndian: What’s An NTA?
By Alice Cooper, Class of 2013
From time to time, All Around Penn -
sauken will reprint articles seen in the
Penndian, PHS’ student newspaper. This
article is from the paper’s fall edition.
You may have seen them in the morning
before homeroom, in between
classes, or in the cafeteria, walking
pompously through the school hallways,
walkie-talkies in hand, effectively telling
students where to be or giving vital information
to teachers. Mr. Jones and Ms.
Tapp diligently function as Pennsauken
High School’s very own NTAs, professionally
known as nonteaching assistants.
Although they do not teach in the classrooms,
their everyday roles in the school
remain important to the regulations of
both the staff and student body.
Primarily, a brief description of the
NTA is to assist school administrators in
enforcing the school laws throughout the
building. The majority of the students at
Pennsauken High School do an excellent
job in adhering to our school policies.
Likewise, throughout the school, Mr.
Jones and Ms. Tapp do their part in maintaining
security issues, controlling student
attendance, administering to behavioral
issues, and implementing the ever-important
uniform policy. In addition to enforcing
school laws, our NTAs have a great
deal of power and influence within the
school as well. They are able to investigate
suspicious behavior, chaperone
school functions, and directly work with
Pennsauken’s police enforcement as
needed. It is amazing to consider that all
of this responsibility is placed upon two
single individuals! To continue, although
the NTAs may come off as intimidating,
please realize that they are very open-
Focusing On Higher Levels
Of Learning For The New Year
By Marilyn Martinez, Superintendent, Pennsauken School District
Welcome back to school! I hope that
everyone enjoyed the Winter Break and
look forward to the New Year of 2013.
The start of a new year always gives you
time to reflect on the year before and to
make new and challenging plans. Our
focus for the new year is to establish
higher levels of teaching and learning.
We are proud of our many accomplishments
during the beginning of this
school year. All elementary schools have
Both former Pennsauken graduates
themselves, Mr. Jones and
Ms. Tapp admire the diversity which
Pennsauken High School has to offer
and are fully aware of the potential
which the students possess. As NTAs,
they view their jobs as great opportunities
to give back towards the community
and guide students with their own life lessons.
Furthermore, if you see Mr. Jones
or Ms. Tapp in the hallways doing their
jobs, do not fear their prowess; instead,
thank them for the significant contributions
which they give daily to this institution.
PHS is able to function as a
PEOPLEINTHENEWS
By Judith Kristen, AAP Columnist
If ever anyone has managed to do 100
years of living on this planet justice, it is
William Henry O’Donnell.
And as far as I’m concerned, “Bill” is
the platinum standard we should all
aspire to.
I was most fortunate to meet up with
Mr. O’Donnell, his beautiful family, and
wonderful friends at The Collins House
in Merchantville, where the birthday boy
received full honors and lots of love from
his many admirers, which included all
five of his children.
Bill, formerly of Pennsauken for
many, many years, is now a resident of
Gibbstown, NJ, where he lives with his
oldest daughter and her husband.
And a happier man than Mr. O’Donnell
you’d be hard-pressed to find.
Born in humble beginnings on Dec.
14, 1912, in Blackwood, NJ, Mr. O’Donnell
has seen a lot of living. And it’s not
just because he’s lived 100 years. It’s because
he lived a full life, all of his life.
Bill is still a man who has a happy reason
to wake up every day. And he looks
back with much joy for the life he was
given and how he loved and valued his
work, Agnes, his beloved wife of 56 years,
his children, his family, as well as his community.
And he also looks forward to a
lot more living!
When I remarked to Bill that I was
also planning on being 100 years old in
about another three decades, he smiled
at me. Then I asked him if he’d be at my
birthday party when I hit the century
mark. Bill smiled again and said, “Sure, I
will! I’m looking forward to it!” Now
that’s my kinda guy!
And Bill’s children are certainly chips
off the old block. I met them all and we
chatted about their father. You could see
the love in their eyes and hear the happiness
in the tone of their voices when
they recalled the time spent with the
lovely man they were most fortunate to
call Dad.
Daughter Marge, age 68, cares for her
father in the home she shares with her
husband, Fred. Her memories of yesteryear
were crystal clear and joy-filled. “He
was always there for us,” Margie recalled.
“He was and still is a wonderful, wonderful
man.”
Son Michael, age 67, also had nothing
but kind words for his father. “He gave
all of us a sense of purpose and community.
Everybody loved Dad.”
Son Bill, age 63, was all smiles as he
talked to me about his father. “Dad
taught us to value the things that last.
Family was very important to him. He
was also a great communicator. Dad was
always there to help us, or anyone, in any
way he could. He’s still someone we all
look up to and respect and love.”
Son Tom, age 58, agreed with his siblings,
“We all had jobs early on. We
mowed lawns, shoveled snow. There
were no idle hands in our house. We
were raised to value our family, to have
dreams, to be productive, but best of all
we were raised in real love.”
Daughter Mary, age 51, and the baby
of the family, also recalls much happiness
when she thinks of her father. “Dad
showed me how to live life to the fullest.
He and Mom were wonderful examples
of love and family. I still remember all
the great times we spent together when
he would read to me. I was so lucky to
have him for my father.”
So what more can I add to this story
other than to say I wish I had known Mr.
O’Donnell sixty-four years ago.
As I was ready to leave I wanted one
final quote from Bill, a summation of
sorts, a word or two to share about what
he has learned over the course of his life
that he would like to pass on as his legacy.
Bill O’Donnell, a Pennsauken resident of many years, celebrated his 100th
birthday with family and friends. O’Donnell is pictured here with his children
Michael, Bill, Tom, Margie, and Mary.
Longtime Pennsauken Resident Celebrates 100th Birthday
With that famous O’Donnell smile he
answered, “Live a full life. Live every
day with purpose. Love and laugh a
lot. Be compassionate. Give back. Help
others. Live a good life and lead by that
example.”
after
christmas
sale
After I finished writing in the little
tablet I brought with me and took a few
more photos of Bill and his family, I was
just so overjoyed by the happiness I felt,
I asked Mr. O’Donnell for a hug, and of
course I got one. Then as I was leaving,
$50
Dehumidifiers
he turned toward me and said, “Judy!
Don’t forget to send me an invitation to
your 100th birthday party!”
I smiled all the way home.
January 2013
Effective January 1, 2013,
the MPWC will be adjusting
water rates to achieve a nominal
3 percent increase in revenues.
For the average
customer who owns and resides
in a single-family home,
this will amount to less than
50 cents per month!
Since 1926, the MPWC has
proudly adhered to their mission
of providing the highest
quality of water at the least
possible cost to its rate payers.
With changing treatment
technologies, increased regulations
for compliance, and
certain infrastructure components
nearing 100 years old,
we have managed to maintain
a rate structure that is affordable
and yet allows us to
continue maintaining your
water distribution system in
efficient and proper working
order. You can see by the rate
comparison chart shown here,
WATER RATES FOR 2013
A Message from Michael Saraceni, Chief Operating Officer
this has not changed.
The primary necessity of
the increase in water rates is
for ongoing support to our
ten-year capital infrastructure
maintenance and upgrade
program. In 2012, the MPWC
repaired and refinished the
1,000,000-gallon elevated
Woodbine Avenue water
tank, replaced older and failing
water mains and replaced
filter media at one of our
treatment plants (increasing
efficiency and water quality).
We also have been performing
a water meter replacement
initiative designed to
upgrade technology to
“radio-read,” alleviating the
necessity of accessing properties
for readings and at the
same time improving accuracy
to account for all water
usage.
For 2013, we will be refinishing
the 3,000,000-gallon el-
PUBLICWORKS Making A Community-Minded Resolution For 2013
By Bernie Kofoet
Public Works Superintendent
I hope that everyone took
time to enjoy the recent holidays
and feels refreshed as we begin the
New Year.
Like many of you this time of year, I
usually make a few resolutions. Well,
those ten pounds I was going to lose in
2012 are still with me. Despite some
failed good intentions over the years,
there have been some successes. I am
sure most of us have been down the
same path.
I would like to offer a few suggested
resolutions, which if even a small number
of us not only make, but keep, can make
a positive difference in our community.
I will be a more courteous citizen.
When I pass a stranger on the street
or entering a building, I will smile and say,
“Hello!” You’ll be surprised at how contagious
this can be. I will remember to
stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk. I will
be a more courteous driver and not get
angry when another driver does something
foolish.
I will be more understanding and tolerant
of those around me.
If there is a neighbor who might need
some assistance with a chore around the
house, rather than complaining about it,
I will offer to help them. If there is someone
less fortunate than I am and needs
help with putting out their trash or picking
up litter around their property, I’ll
take a few minutes to help them.
I will be a better steward of my property
and of public property.
I will make sure that my trash is properly
contained. I will pick up litter on my
property. I will use public trash containers
when I am out. By doing so, I will be a
leader by example. I will maintain my
property in the same way I want others
to maintain theirs. I will help with a community
clean up or I will help organize
one in my neighborhood.
I will be more conscious of my own
trash and work harder at separating my
trash and recyclables.
I will realize that I am a part of a global
community and my actions or inactions
have an effect, good or bad, that will impact
future generations. Before you
throw something in your kitchen trash,
stop for a second to think, “Is this a recyclable?”
With single stream recycling it is
much easier to recycle. There is no need
to separate papers from cans or cardboard
from paper. It all goes into one
container.
I will look for positive ways to become
more involved in the community.
I will find a group or activity where I
can put my talents and skills to use for
the help of others. The volunteer opportunities
in Pennsauken are many and
varied. Schools, PTA, churches, youth
groups, the fire department, veterans’ organizations,
senior citizen groups, the library,
the community garden program,
the Food Bank of South Jersey, and Almost
Home Animal Shelter all provide
opportunities to become more involved.
TALKIN’ TRASH
There will be no trash or recyclables collected on New Year’s Day, Tuesday, Jan. 1.
Tuesday collections will occur on Wednesday, Jan. 2. White goods and yard waste will
be collected on Thursday, Jan. 3. Thursday’s collections will be on Friday, Jan. 4, and
Friday’s collection will occur on Saturday, Jan. 5, beginning at 6 a.m.
Barr 2012 Recipient Of
Nicgorski Memorial Award
Pennsauken resident Robin Barr is
the 2012 recipient of the annual Walt
“Wodgie” Nicgorski Memorial Award.
According its inscription, the award goes
to an individual “who has demonstrated
untiring dedication and unselfishness for
the betterment of PYAA soccer.”
“Robin has made significant contributions
to PYAA soccer for many years,
serving as both a coach and the sports pro -
gram’s president,” explained Walt Nicgorski,
son of the late Wodgie Nicgorski,
who passed away in 1987. “His tireless
work with the children of our community
is a testament to the impact PYAA and its
volunteers have has on our young people
and is a fitting tribute to my father’s legacy.”
The Walt “Wodgie” Nicgorski Memorial
Award has been given out to PYAA
soccer volunteers for over 24 years. Nicgorski,
a longtime resident of Pennsauken,
was a staunch and dedicated PYAA volunteer,
assisting with both the soccer and
baseball programs. The sports complex on
Powell and Collins avenues is also named
in his memory.
Support For Sandy Hook Elementary
continued from page 1
“As always, we continue to work closely
with the Township’s emergency responders
to carefully review, revise, and practice our
safety plans,” explained Martinez in her letter
to parents. “During the summer, we created
a Safety and Security Task Force.
Together, we have been closely monitoring
our security procedures and preparedness
in responding to emergencies.”
Martinez also stated that schools regularly
practice a variety of emergency
drills during the school day and that the
public schools throughout Pennsauken
have camera monitors and buzzers for
visiting procedures.
Helping To Deal With Tragedy
In addition to a message on school security,
the Pennsauken School District
offered tips from the Traumatic Loss
Coalitions for Youth to help some of
Pennsauken’s younger residents regain
a sense of safety and security. Such guidelines
included:
• Monitoring the amount of children’s exposure
to the media coverage of the event
• Providing children with accurate, age-appropriate
information about the event to
avoid rumors or misinformation
• Taking the concerns of your children
seriously, as they oftentimes feel more
vulnerable than adults
• Explaining the importance of safety,
while reassuring them that they are safe
in school
• Keeping a regular routine to help provide
a sense of security
• Spending time together as a family and
connecting with friends to provide a
safety net for children
• Allowing some time for extra comforting,
while children deal with upsetting
circumstances
A Closing Thought On The Tragedy
At the time that this article was written,
the community of Newtown, CT began to
say goodbye to precious members of their
families and the educators who sacrificed
their very lives to keep students safe. As
the dialog about the underlying reasons
behind this tragedy begins to be discussed
by federal officials and communities
throughout the nation, the one thing that
everyone can truly take from this horrible
event is this: that life is precious and fragile.
We should take this opportunity to hug
our loved ones a little tighter, to appreciate
our time together and to make each moment
count. For tomorrow is never promise,
only a possibility.
SENIORCORNER
By Sonny DiSabato
Senior Citizen Coordinator
Hello fellow seniors. Welcome to
2013! I wish everyone a healthy and
prosperous New Year.
There are many services available in
Pennsauken for our citizens. For example,
our Assessor’s Office, run by John
Dymond and Shakir Ali, serves and answers
all questions pertaining to senior,
disabled, and veteran discounts for property
taxes. They also provide information
regarding New Jersey’s property tax reimbursement
program. I see firsthand
the extra care and attention they give to
our seniors, they are a great part of our
our Pennsauken family.
If you have access to a computer, or
have a family member or friend who
does, you can find more information
about New Jersey’s property tax relief
programs at http://www.state.nj.us/treasury/relief.shtml.
Please note that you or
your spouse needs to own your home,
and that you will need to meet specific
income and residency requirements in
order to benefit from these programs.
You can also find the forms for tax deductions
for seniors, the disabled and veterans
by visiting Pennsauken Township’s
web site at www.twp.pennsauken.nj.us
were not given for decoration, but
rather dedication. Dedication to our
nation, its values and its ideals. Men
earned these honors for our children.
Use Houseplants To Filter The Air In Your Home
By Kathleen Harvey,
Owner, Plant Artistry, LLC
When the brisk, winter air
blows and the snowflakes
fall, we huddle in our
houses for warmth and comfort. With
doors and windows sealed shut against
the cold, our indoor air may become
more polluted than the air outside. Modern
homes can be a minefield of chemical
hazards. Carpets, furniture, insulation,
paint, and even fireplaces can emit hazardous
gases.
Formaldehyde is a ubiquitous chemical
found in virtually all indoor environments.
Major sources of formaldehyde include
particle board or pressed wood products
used in furniture manufacturing, and consumer
paper products which have been
treated with UF resins, such as grocery
bags, waxed papers, facial tissues and paper
towels. Many common household cleaning
agents contain formaldehyde. UF resins
are used as stiffeners, wrinkle resisters,
water repellents, fire retardants and adhesive
binders in floor coverings, carpet backings
and permanent-press clothes. Other
sources of formaldehyde include heating
and cooking fuels like natural gas, kerosene,
and cigarette smoke. Formaldehyde irritates
the mucous membranes of the eyes,
nose and throat. Until recently, the most serious
of the diseases attributed to formaldehyde
exposure was asthma. However, the
Environmental Protection Agency has recently
conducted research where
formaldehyde was strongly suspected of
causing a rare type of throat cancer in longterm
occupants of mobile homes.
One of the ways to reduce indoor pollutants
such as formaldehyde is with
houseplants. The Foliage for Clean Air
Council, a communications clearinghouse
for information on the use of foliage
to improve indoor air quality,
recommends a minimum of two plants
per 100 square feet of floor space in an
average home with eight- to ten-foot ceil-
ings. If you’re not ready to fill your house
with plants, start on a small scale by selecting
plants that are known to remove
the most worrisome pollutants. For less
than the price of one doctor visit for a
sore throat, house plants can clean the air
in your home and make it safer for us to
breathe. Several tropical houseplants
have been shown to absorb chemicals
while replenishing the air with oxygen.
Common house plants such as Boston
Fern, Philodendron, Pothos, and Spider
Plants are inexpensive, aesthetically
pleasing ways to filter toxins from a
home during these winter months when
we are likely to spend most of our time
indoors. These plants are particularly efficient
in filtering formaldehyde, benzene,
xylene, and carbon monoxide.
Introducing these plants into your home
can significantly reduce the concentration
of these chemicals. Although calculations
of the buildup and dispersion of
pollutants in a home are complex, these
plants can drastically improve air quality
in a home. The rates plants clean the air
will vary depending on the size of the
plant, the temperature, and how polluted
the air is, among other things.
Spider Plants are one of the easiest to
grow house plants, and are very effective
at removing formaldehyde and carbon
monoxide from the air. Spider Plants can
be useful in kitchens with gas stoves or in
rooms with fireplaces where carbon
monoxide may accumulate. Be sure to
keep all plants at least six feet away from
heat sources such as fireplaces. Fireplaces
can quickly dry leaves and soil surrounding
roots and turn the plant into a fire
hazard if it’s placed too close.
Strategically placed houseplants can
bring us enjoyment and help keep us
healthy. Give them a try.
PENNSAUKEN FREE PUBLIC LIBRARY
During the month of January, we all
recommit to doing things that make our
life better. While starting all those New
Year resolutions, don’t forget to make
time for reading and visiting your
Pennsauken Library.
Reading can enrich your life by helping
you learn new things; we have cookbooks,
exercise videos, and so much more.
But reading can also provide a much
needed escape from the challenges of
everyday life. Whether you like romance
or westerns, science fiction, or historical
fact, the Library has something for you.
The Library can even be the place
where you come to practice your healthy
habits. We will be offering several yoga
classes this month and again in March,
and a local Taking Off Pounds Sensibly
(TOPS) group meets here every Monday
night at 6 p.m.
If you’ve committed to learning some-
thing new, you may want to register for a
computer class. If your New Year’s goal
is to help others, you may want to consider
becoming an ESL tutor. Your Library
has so much to offer!
Reading and early literacy activities
are especially important for our children.
During our Babytime program, held
Thursdays and Fridays at 10:30 a.m., we
foster positive family communication
while enjoying singing, playing, and reading.
For our youngest patrons, the Library
may be the first place they see, feel, and
hear a book being read to them. It may
also be where they first walk or first
make new friends. As children get older,
the Library provides personal firsts. It will
be the place they find the first book they
enjoy reading over and over again. They
may discover their favorite author. They
may make new connections to the world.
They may learn about themselves or
Friends Of Pennsauken Free Public
Library Looking For Volunteers
Have you wondered how you could
serve your community? Want to be
involved with a congenial, volunteer organization?
Well, the Friends of the Pennsauken
Free Public Library need you!
Our fundraising committee has some
new ideas for 2013 and we need you, and
your willingness to be of service to our
community. One possible activity is
“Popcorn Fridays.” This would give
everyone borrowing DVDs from the library
an opportunity to have freshly
made popcorn while watching the
movie. All funds would go directly to
support community programs and help
with items not covered by the library’s
normal budget. Please e-mail the Friends
at FriendsofLibrary@yahoo.com and
put “volunteer” in the subject line. Be
certain to include your full name and
telephone number. Our program committee
chairperson will contact you.
Boys Scouts In Pennsauken, Merchantville Plan For Pinewood, Klondike Derbies
Five-inch blocks of pine are being
shaped, sanded and painted in preparation
for the annual Pinewood Derby, an
event that is a highlight of the Pack 116
year. The Cub Scouts, with some help
from adults, will decide the design: the
classic wedge, sport coupe, pencil; designs
as different as each boy’s personality.
Once designed, blocks of wood are
trimmed on a skill saw, then sanded and
painted. The wheels are smoothed, the
four one-inch nails that serve as axles are
polished, and everything is assembled.
The trick to a winning pinewood car is
reaching the magic five ounces, the maximum
weight for a Derby submission.
The block of wood with wheels is only
about two ounces, so additional weight
must be added. The ingenious use of nuts,
bolts, and coins as part of the design gets
the weight to five ounces on the nose.
Reaching the five-ounce mark on the
scale enables the boys to turn in their car
for the race and allows them to become
a member of the “5000 Club.”
Each year, the award for being a repeat
member of the 5000 Club gets bigger.
Last year, the boys who have been in the
5000 Club for five years in a row received
engraved medals. 2013 will be the first
year that a boy who joined as a kindergartener
could be in the 5000 Club for six
years, thanks to the K Kub Kindergarten
program, a pilot program in Pack 116.
This year’s Pinewood will be held on
Saturday, Jan. 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Following
the Cub Pinewood, local Girls
Scouts will also be racing the cars they’ve
built. The girls have been doing pinewood
cars for the past few years, and they enjoy
the building and racing as much as the boys.
The weekend following the Pinewood,
our local Troop 118 Boy Scouts will be
attending the Klondike Derby at Pine
Hill Scout Reservation. Held Jan. 25-27,
the Klondike is a test of the skills Scouts
have learned throughout the year, not
the least of which is to be able to sleep in
a tent in January and stay warm. Competitions
in fire building, cooking, and
other Scout skills are all part of the threeday
event.
The Scouts pull a wooden sled, like an
Iditarod sled in the Yukon, filled with the
materials and supplies they will need for
the day long competition. They traverse
the camp from station to station. In the
afternoon, Scouts will do some head-tohead
competitions, including firemen
carrying and sled races, among others.
Saturday night, the boys get a chance
to have some fun with the other Scouts
during a game night at the camp dining
hall.
The Cub Scout Pack is open to all boys,
kindergarten through fifth grade. Boy Scouts
are for boys, beginning at sixth grade or from
age 11 to 18. The Scouts are always welcoming
Food Bank Partners With Bank Of America To Fight Hunger
The Food Bank of South Jersey has
announced a partnership with Bank of
America through Feeding America’s
“Give a Meal” program. For every $1 donated
to Feeding America or the Food
Bank of South Jersey, the Bank of America
Charitable Foundation will contribute
an additional $2, up to a total
match of $1.5 million. This is in addition
to an initial $1 million contribution to
Feeding America. This support is part of
Bank of America’s ongoing effort to address
critical economic and social issues
in the communities it serves.
“Critical.” is how Val Traore describes
the food bank’s current needs. “We have
growing numbers of people needing
food, needing supplies, needing services.
And it’s always a challenge to raise
enough revenue to help them all.” The
Food Bank of South Jersey has seen food
distribution increase from 8 million
pounds in 2009 to an anticipated 14 million
pounds in 2014.
“There is an urgent need to help individuals
and families at risk of hunger,
even more so in New Jersey this holiday
season in the wake of Hurricane Sandy,”
said Bob Doherty, New Jersey president,
Bank of America. “The Give a Meal program
enables people to triple the impact
of their donation toward hunger relief.”
Donating to Give a Meal is simple.
Contributions can be made online at
www.bankofamerica.com/give or www.feed
ing america.org/BankofAmerica. Local
donors can direct their contribution to
HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS
By Billy Wright
Pennsauken High School Athletic Director
While the Indian coaches work diligently
to prepare their teams for competition
and a hoped-for championship, it
is in the arena of citizenship that the
coaching staff as educators push our kids
to be most successful. The mission of the
PHS Athletic Department is to provide
quality educational opportunities that
utilize the interscholastic competitive experience
to develop positive character in
each individual student athlete. The department
philosophy is that athletic participation
is considered an integral part
of the educational program. Properly
guided, developed, and administered
athletic programs provide experiences
which will contribute to the physical,
mental, and emotional development of
young people. Athletics are extracurricular
activities, an extension of the classroom
designed to provide wholesome
competition and to assist in the development
of citizenship.
Indian student athletes are living up to
our mission and philosophy by achieving
in the classroom. The fall 2012 season
saw 130 out of 251 athletes listed on the
PHS honor roll. Fifty-two percent of total
fall participants were able to engage in
physically challenging practices or contests
daily and still manage their time and
PHS Athletes Champions In The Classroom
energy and excel in the classroom. Boys
soccer led the way with 25 scholars, followed
by football with 22; field hockey,
19; girls volleyball, 18; and girls soccer, 17.
As a percentage of participant numbers,
girls soccer had 77 percent of team members
listed on the honor roll, followed by
field hockey at 76 percent; girls cross
country, 67 percent; girls volleyball, 69
percent; and boys soccer, 60 percent.
The greatest gain by a team was the
“Code Red” football team, with 17 varsity
players on the list. That number is a
dramatic improvement from last year,
and evidence that Coach Tabb is getting
the message out that, “you can be as big
as you want or score all the touchdowns
you want, but if you don’t perform in the
classroom, you’ll be right here with me in
Pennsauken when you graduate, instead
of the college of your choice.”
Grapplers Excel In Tournament
PHS Wrestling Coach Eric Mossop
was disappointed that the Haddonfield
Wrestling Tournament decided to eliminate
team scores, as the Indians would
surely have been on the heels of the
home-standing and South Jersey-ranked
Bulldawgs. Twelve PHS wrestlers walked
away with medals, showing that
Pennsauken will be a force to contend
with for a possible league crown this sea-
son. Gold medal winners were Edwin
Lopez, John Henderson and Jacob Henderson;
silver medals were earned by Tyler
Carducci, Peter Ibrahim, and Hendrickson
Tineo; and bronze medals went to
Christian Espinozo, Nhiem Bien, Sonny
Nguyen, Rafael Padilla, Leroy Thomas,
and Aaron Swann. The BCSL league
championship could very well come down
to Jan. 23, as defending champion
Moorestown visits Pennsauken for a
highly anticipated 6:00 p.m. contest.
Muhammad Shines in the Sun
PHS cheerleader Zaakira Muhammad
performs endless flips and cheers on
the sideline of PHS Football games; in
her free time, she is a distinguished national
class gymnast on the TNT Elite
Gymnastics squad. As the rest of us attempt
to adjust to the cold winter conditions,
Zaakira took off to the Bahamas to
compete in the Atlantis Crown Gymnastics
Invitational. Sponsored by the United
States Academy of Gymnastics, the 15
TNT team members competed against
teams representing the Bahamas, Barbados,
Canada, and the United States.
Zaakira won the gold medal for the all
around, individual competition, and the
vault. She also earned silver medals in the
floor exercise and the beam, and a
bronze in the bars.
An Interview With Cross Country Runners: Eric Butler and Briana Roberts
By Billy Wright, PHS Athletic Director
BW: Eric, first of all congratulations on
qualifying for the state cross country
championships.
E:Thank you.
BW: Do you realize that you are the
first PHS cross country runner to advance
to the states since 1983?
E: I knew it had been a while but not
that long. Almost 30 years, wow!
BW: You are the school record holder
in the 800 meters in spring track. Cross
country is 3.1 miles and a far cry from
the half. What do you attest that wide
range of skill to?
E: Hard work, dedication and a lot of
support from my coach and teammates.
BW: Briana, unfortunately, you missed
qualifying for the states by one place
with your 11th place finish at the sectionals.
I know you worked hard for this;
disappointed I guess?
B: In the beginning I was, but my teammates
reminded me I have three more
years and a very bright future.
BW: Do you know that a female has
never qualified for states at PHS?
B: Yes, Coach Zimmerman told me
that and I am even more determined to
make it the next three years.
BW: This sport demands an enormous
amount of self discipline and a lot of
miles run. How many miles a week do
you average?
B: 35 to 40 miles.
E: 50 to 55 miles.
BW:What is the longest you’ve ever run?
E:Two and a half hours!
B:An hour and a half!
BW:Guys, talk for a moment about the
team camaraderie in an individual sport.
E: For it to be an individual sport, the
team and the coaches are like a family.
While the boys and girls are separate, we
do a lot together and that makes it a lot
of fun.
B: We are a family. The coaches push
you hard but they make you enjoy it.
BW: Most people don’t find running
