Page 28 ALL AROUND PENNSAUKEN January 2013 PYAASPORTS What a successful year it has been for PYAA Football! All five weight classes were SJEIYFL Olympic Conference Champions. This is the first time in league history that this has happened. The combined record for the season was 35 wins and 5 losses. The Junior High team went all the way to win the SJEIYFL League Championship, beating Washington Township 20 to 0 during their first-ever It was a very successful season for PYAA Football, as all five weight classes were SJEIYFL Olympic Conference Champions. In addition, the 105 lb. cheerleading squad competed in the SJElite Cheerleading Competition, held at Williams - town High School on Nov. 18 and came in fourth place for their category. We would like to thank all of our coaches, team parents, snack stand volunteers and especially the kids for a great season. We couldn't have done it without you! This scratch tournament brought together the best high school bowlers from 31 towns in central and southern NJ. After ranking 10th in the girls’ preliminaries, Jessica went on to bowl three more 200+ games, getting her through the elimination rounds and into the finals. The Pennsauken High School Sophomore proudly took second place in the tournament overall, after falling to Julie Ott of Manchester Township in the final game by only 29 pins. Congratulations! January 2013 ALL AROUND PENNSAUKEN Page 29 HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS By Billy Wright Pennsauken High School Athletic Director While the Indian coaches work diligently to prepare their teams for competition and a hoped-for championship, it is in the arena of citizenship that the coaching staff as educators push our kids to be most successful. The mission of the PHS Athletic Department is to provide quality educational opportunities that utilize the interscholastic competitive experience to develop positive character in each individual student athlete. The department philosophy is that athletic participation is considered an integral part of the educational program. Properly guided, developed, and administered athletic programs provide experiences which will contribute to the physical, mental, and emotional development of young people. Athletics are extracurricular activities, an extension of the classroom designed to provide wholesome competition and to assist in the development of citizenship. Indian student athletes are living up to our mission and philosophy by achieving in the classroom. The fall 2012 season saw 130 out of 251 athletes listed on the PHS honor roll. Fifty-two percent of total fall participants were able to engage in physically challenging practices or contests daily and still manage their time and PHS Athletes Champions In The Classroom energy and excel in the classroom. Boys soccer led the way with 25 scholars, followed by football with 22; field hockey, 19; girls volleyball, 18; and girls soccer, 17. As a percentage of participant numbers, girls soccer had 77 percent of team members listed on the honor roll, followed by field hockey at 76 percent; girls cross country, 67 percent; girls volleyball, 69 percent; and boys soccer, 60 percent. The greatest gain by a team was the “Code Red” football team, with 17 varsity players on the list. That number is a dramatic improvement from last year, and evidence that Coach Tabb is getting the message out that, “you can be as big as you want or score all the touchdowns you want, but if you don’t perform in the classroom, you’ll be right here with me in Pennsauken when you graduate, instead of the college of your choice.” Grapplers Excel In Tournament PHS Wrestling Coach Eric Mossop was disappointed that the Haddonfield Wrestling Tournament decided to eliminate team scores, as the Indians would surely have been on the heels of the home-standing and South Jersey-ranked Bulldawgs. Twelve PHS wrestlers walked away with medals, showing that Pennsauken will be a force to contend with for a possible league crown this season. Gold medal winners were Edwin Lopez, John Henderson and Jacob Henderson; silver medals were earned by Tyler Carducci, Peter Ibrahim, and Hendrickson Tineo; and bronze medals went to Christian Espinozo, Nhiem Bien, Sonny Nguyen, Rafael Padilla, Leroy Thomas, and Aaron Swann. The BCSL league championship could very well come down to Jan. 23, as defending champion Moorestown visits Pennsauken for a highly anticipated 6:00 p.m. contest. Muhammad Shines in the Sun PHS cheerleader Zaakira Muhammad performs endless flips and cheers on the sideline of PHS Football games; in her free time, she is a distinguished national class gymnast on the TNT Elite Gymnastics squad. As the rest of us attempt to adjust to the cold winter conditions, Zaakira took off to the Bahamas to compete in the Atlantis Crown Gymnastics Invitational. Sponsored by the United States Academy of Gymnastics, the 15 TNT team members competed against teams representing the Bahamas, Barbados, Canada, and the United States. Zaakira won the gold medal for the all around, individual competition, and the vault. She also earned silver medals in the floor exercise and the beam, and a bronze in the bars.
