PENNSAUKEN FREE PUBLIC LIBRARY
During the month of January, we all
recommit to doing things that make our
life better. While starting all those New
Year resolutions, don’t forget to make
time for reading and visiting your
Pennsauken Library.
Reading can enrich your life by helping
you learn new things; we have cookbooks,
exercise videos, and so much more.
But reading can also provide a much
needed escape from the challenges of
everyday life. Whether you like romance
or westerns, science fiction, or historical
fact, the Library has something for you.
The Library can even be the place
where you come to practice your healthy
habits. We will be offering several yoga
classes this month and again in March,
and a local Taking Off Pounds Sensibly
(TOPS) group meets here every Monday
night at 6 p.m.
If you’ve committed to learning some-
thing new, you may want to register for a
computer class. If your New Year’s goal
is to help others, you may want to consider
becoming an ESL tutor. Your Library
has so much to offer!
Reading and early literacy activities
are especially important for our children.
During our Babytime program, held
Thursdays and Fridays at 10:30 a.m., we
foster positive family communication
while enjoying singing, playing, and reading.
For our youngest patrons, the Library
may be the first place they see, feel, and
hear a book being read to them. It may
also be where they first walk or first
make new friends. As children get older,
the Library provides personal firsts. It will
be the place they find the first book they
enjoy reading over and over again. They
may discover their favorite author. They
may make new connections to the world.
They may learn about themselves or
Friends Of Pennsauken Free Public
Library Looking For Volunteers
Have you wondered how you could
serve your community? Want to be
involved with a congenial, volunteer organization?
Well, the Friends of the Pennsauken
Free Public Library need you!
Our fundraising committee has some
new ideas for 2013 and we need you, and
your willingness to be of service to our
community. One possible activity is
“Popcorn Fridays.” This would give
everyone borrowing DVDs from the library
an opportunity to have freshly
made popcorn while watching the
movie. All funds would go directly to
support community programs and help
with items not covered by the library’s
normal budget. Please e-mail the Friends
at FriendsofLibrary@yahoo.com and
put “volunteer” in the subject line. Be
certain to include your full name and
telephone number. Our program committee
chairperson will contact you.
Volunteers are always welcome to
help with our many other programs,
whether it is keeping an eye on the art
work displayed, sorting books, serving refreshments
or planning. Upcoming meeting
dates are Jan. 9, Feb. 13, and Mar. 13
at 7 p.m. in the library’s community room.
Art Show and Sale In April
In April, we are sponsoring our an-
Pennsauken Free Public Library Can
Help Get 2013 Off To A Great Start
nual art show and sale for artists living in
Pennsauken and Merchantville. Age
categories for submissions are from
eighth grade through adult. Brochures
outlining the exhibit are available in the
library’s lobby. Works in various media
are welcome. Some examples include
woodworking, painting, photography,
graphic arts, ceramics, and fabric art.
Size and number requirements are
outlined in the brochure, so please pick
one up and plan to be included in this
wonderful opportunity to showcase
your talents.
Mini Book Sale
Look for the organization’s first ever
mini spring book sale. We have plenty of
great books ready for you. More information
will be available at the library,
upcoming issues of All Around Penn -
sauken, and Channel 19.
Poetry Contest
The Mary W. Levin Poetry Contest
will again take place in June. Polish those
poems you have stashed, write some
new ones and enter the contest. Dates
will be announced at a later date.
others and find that they have strengths
they never knew they had. For middle
childhood and adolescents, reading for
pleasure is a necessary part of developing
a commitment to learning. Bring your
children to the Library and help them develop
their own healthy reading habits!
We’re all so busy. We understand it’s
hard to make into the Library sometimes.
The Library is still available to you
at www.pennsaukenlibrary.org. You can
download audio and eBooks with your
library card. The resource, GCFLearn
Free, lets you watch videos on how to use
a computer, Facebook, the internet, Microsoft
Word and Excel. It also provides
math and reading tutorials.
Need resume help? Try the Job and Career
Accelerator. This is part of a resource
that is great for both children and adults
called Learning Express or simply “Learn
A Test.” And of course, during our regular
hours of operation, there is a librarian
available at the other end of the phone!
So when you commit to making life
improvements for yourself and your
family this New Year, commit to making
the Library part of your support system!
