Introduction The US invasion of Somalia was launched with great fanfare by a lame-duck president who just one month before had been overwhelmingly defeated at the polls. Virtually overnight, and without even the semblance of a public debate, President Bush announced he was sending an occupation force on a "rescue mission." Presidentelect Clinton immediately announced his full support. Alongside the US Marines, the mass media were mobilized to overwhelm the American public with heartbreaking scenes of starving Somali children. For several weeks the words "invasion" and "military" were inseparable from "humanitarian." Journalists and academics held forth on the new, "philanthropic" role of the Pentagon. The complex web of historical, social and political forces that had produced the catastrophe in Somalia were reduced in the official presentation of events to a series of soundbites and epithets. There was the notable example of NBC News anchorman Tom Brokaw in Mogadishu describing the warring Somali factions as "yahoos." Insofar as there was any pretense of an explanation for the social calamity that had engulfed Somalia, it was limited to denunciations of the "war lords." They became the latest in a growing list of officially designated malefactors — such as the "drug king" Manuel Noriega and the "tyrant" Saddam Hussein — whose transgressions had to be punished by dispatching the US military to bomb and shoot the local populations and occupy their territory.
