Gerry Healy
and His Place in the History
of the Fourth International

Gerry Healy died at the age of 76 on December
14,1989, after a career in the revolutionary workers
movement that spanned six decades. This book
assesses the political lessons of the struggle waged by
Healy in the British and international Trotskyist
movement and of his ultimate opportunist degeneration
and break with the International Committee
in 1985. In 1961-63, as the leader of the SLL of
Britain, he played the principal role in the struggle
of the ICFI aga inst the S WP's betrayal ofTrotskyism.
North explains how Healy developed an increasingly
nationalist conception of the building of
the Trotskyist movement, and came to subordinate
the work of the world party to the practical tasks confronting its British section. He
explains the circumstances under which the revolutionary Marxists waged a counterattack
against the WRP opportunists which ultimately won the support of the majority of the
sections of the International Committee. The author gives a vivid picture of Healy's great
political strengths as well as the political weaknesses that contributed to his degeneration.
