Bangor University was founded in
1884, making it one of the oldest
and most prestigious universities in
the UK. Qualifications are recognized
world-wide, which explains why
international students have chosen to
study at Bangor for decades, and who
today make up 12 percent of the total
student population.
In the latest assessment by the
UK government into the quality of
research at UK universities, research
at Bangor was identified as ‘world
leading’ in the 19 assessed subjects
areas, with Accounting and Finance
ranked number one in the UK and
Electronic Engineering ranked number
two in the UK. Bangor also performs
extremely well in the Teaching Quality
assessment. Most departments are
rated the highest possible award of
“excellent” for the quality of teaching
and Bangor was ranked 15th in the
UK for Overall Student Experience.
Schools at Bangor have excellent
resources which include the rare and
outstanding facility of the £3.5 million
Prince Madog ocean-going research ship.
Other specialist equipment and facilities
include the functional magnetic resonance
imaging (fMRI), nanotechnology
development laboratories, dual energy
x-ray absorptiometry room and a £15
million Centre for Advanced Software
Technology.
Bangor is committed to encouraging
individuals to achieve their highest
potential through use of the tutorial
system and teaching in smaller groups,
so students enjoy a low student to
teacher ratio compared to other UK
and US universities. Our staff know
each student personally and have an
open door policy.
The cost of living in Bangor is lower
than in larger city universities. It’s a
safe place to live as crime rates are
amongst the lowest in the UK. It is a
compact city – university buildings,
accommodation and city center are
all within walking distance. It’s not
an industrialized city, so Bangor is
a clean and healthy place to live.
Living in Bangor enables students to
combine a high quality educational
experience with a wonderful living
environment. North Wales is an
area of outstanding natural beauty,
yet close to major cities such as
Manchester and Liverpool, so travelling
to and from Bangor is an easy twohour
train journey from Manchester
and four hours from London.
