6.3.2 Vegetation Condition The vegetation condition is variable within the port facility locality, with the majority of the areas proposed for development being located in poor to medium condition. The proposed iron ore stockyard area and proposed conveyor line is impacted by livestock and associated cattle infrastructure (i.e. dams, stockyard, tracks), with high impact being recorded at dams and natural waterbodies. The proposed infrastructure is parallel to the existing McArthur River Mine haul road and port. These areas was infested with a variety of weed species, including Weeds of National Significance (see Section 6.3.6). Fire impact in the area was fairly low, which is confirmed by fire scar and late burn mapping presented in Section 3.5 (NAFI 2012). The coastal vegetation in the immediate area of the barge loading facility and conveyor consists of a small patch of mangrove regrowth (fringed with several weed species), depauperate coastal vine thickets, and Melaleuca low woodlands. 6.3.3 Notable Species Records No threatened or other notable plant species were identified during the flora surveys at the port facility. A summary of possible notable species (from data provided by from NRETAS and gathered during project surveys during 2011 and 2012) is provided in Section 7.2. From this summary, species that are noted as recorded from the project area or are likely to occur in the port development area have been expanded upon below in an effort to highlight species and habitats of concern. The majority of the notable plant species that occur close to the Bing Bong port areas are associated with aquatic fresh water habitats. Below is a summary of the habitats in the area and the species that are most likely to be found in them. Swamps Species recorded within the development area • Peplidium maritimum (Near Threatened) has been recorded from within the Bing Bong development area. This species has been recorded on a number of habitats on the site where it occurs on the edges of fresh water lagoons, moist estuarine and sub tidal areas. Species recorded very close to development area • Triglochin multifructa (Data Deficient) and Vallisneria caulescens (Data Deficient) are submerged aquatic species which are found in standing water. They thus occupy a relatively small area in the landscape but may be subject to run off related sedimentation or pollution. There are several shallow swamps in development area where these species could occur. • Eriocaulon carpentariae occurs on the edges of fresh water swamps of which there are several in the north of the development area. Species recorded as Likely or Highly likely to be found in the vicinity of the development area. Although not found within the development area the following species have either been found nearby or have been found in very similar habitats to those found in the development area. • Nesaea crinipes (Data Deficient) is found on the edges of swamps and waterholes and may be found in swamps in the mid or northern parts of the site. • Nymphoides exiliflora (Data Deficient) is found in swamps and shallowly and seasonally inundated Melaleuca viridiflora woodlands. It may be found in the swamps in the northern part of the site. • Psydrax paludosa (Data Deficient) is usually found submerged with other tall shrubs/ small trees such as Asteromyrtus symphyocarpa and Melaleuca viridiflora. It may be present in swamps in the northern part of the site.
