6.4.2 Fauna Survey Results The survey recorded a total of 115 fauna species, comprising of 8 amphibians, 16 reptiles, 81 birds, and 6 mammals. Three introduced species were identified. The majority of species were identified through trapping, active search techniques, and incidental observations. Species lists, status, and identification method are provided in the Appendix D-4. Summary descriptions by faunal group are provided below. The majority of species recorded during the survey are common and generally widespread throughout similar habitat in the region. One threatened species (as per the TPWC Act) was identified during the survey – Mertens’ Water Monitor (Varanus mertensi). No species listed as Threatened under the EPBC Act were identified, however 13 listed migratory species (all birds) and 29 listed marine species (all birds) were recorded. Amphibians A total of 8 amphibians was recorded from the port development surveys, mainly from pit traps and active searches (Appendix D-4). Most were recorded around freshwater swamps and pools in the project area. In addition to the species identified, amphibians from the genus Crinia and the genus Uperoleia were trapped but could not be identified to species level without a reference call. • No threatened species were identified. • Three Data Deficient species were identified – Litoria australis, Litoria bicolor, and Opisthodon ornatus. These species are common and widespread across northern Australia. • The remaining species (including the unidentified Crinia and Uperoleia species) are all listed as Least Concern in the NT. • One introduced species was identified, Cane Toad (Chaunus marinus), which was recorded at all sites throughout the port facility area. Reptiles A total of 16 reptiles was recorded from the survey, mainly from pit traps and active searches (Appendix D- 4). Ten species were recorded once only. Two skink (Carlia) species and Gilbert’s Dragon (Lophognathus gilbert) were the only reptiles recorded regularly. Birds • One threatened species, Mertens’ Water Monitor (Varanus mertensi), which is listed as Vulnerable was identified on several occasions in man-made dam highly disturbed by feral animals (mainly cattle and pigs) within the project area. • Four Data Deficient species – Dendrelaphis punctulata, Demansia papuensis, Demansia vestigiata, Antaresia children were identified. The statuses of the latter three are proposed to be changed to Least Concern. • One Not Listed species – Brachyurophis roperi; and one Not Evaluated species – Cryptoblepharus ruber, were identified. These are both common and widespread in suitable habitat throughout northern Australia. • The remaining species are all listed as Least Concern. • No introduced reptile species were identified. A total of 81 native bird species was identified during the survey (Appendix D-4) from 41 families. This is quite a large total for a small survey area, and reflects the diversity of habitats within and proximate.
