4.5.2 Fauna Survey Results The Wet and Dry season field surveys of the MLA areas recorded a total of 150 fauna species, comprising of 13 amphibians, 34 reptiles, 91 birds, and 19 mammals. Four introduced species were identified. The majority of species were identified through trapping, active search techniques, and incidental observations. Species lists, status, and identification method are provided in the Appendix D-2. Summary descriptions by faunal group are provided below. Desktop search data is summarised in Section 3.5 and listed in Appendix D-1. The majority of species recorded during the survey are common and generally widespread throughout similar habitat in the region (based on existing data records). Three threatened species (as per TPWC Act) were identified during the survey: • Mertens’ Water Monitor (Varanus mertensi); • Australian Bustard (Ardeotis australis); and • Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae). No species listed as threatened under the EPBC Act were identified, however four listed migratory species (all birds) and 24 listed marine species (23 birds and one reptile) were recorded. Fauna methodology and survey limitations are provided in Section 2.3. Amphibians A total of 13 amphibians was recorded from the surveys, mainly from pit traps and active searches (Appendix D-2). Most species were recorded from the two dampest sites – F6 and F10 – and several species were recorded at multiple sites, indicating their generalist habitat preferences. The least productive sites were all in or adjacent to Vegetation Type 2 – mixed Eucalypt mid open woodland – which occurs in drier areas with low shelter. Amphibians from the genus Crinia and the genus Uperoleia were captured but could not be identified to species level without a reference call. Reptiles • No threatened species were identified. • Two Data Deficient species were identified – Litoria australis and Opisthodon ornatus. These species are common and widespread throughout this region, and also the across northern Australia. • The remaining species (including the unidentified Crinia and Uperoleia species) are all listed as Least Concern. • One introduced species was identified, Cane Toad (Chaunus marinus), which was recorded in abundance at a majority of sites throughout the MLA areas. A total of 34 reptiles was recorded from the survey, mainly from pit traps, funnel traps and active searches (Appendix D-2). Geckoes (nine species), skinks (nine species) and dragons (seven species) were wellrepresented in regards to diversity, habitat and abundance. The rocky ridges especially contained high richness of Diporiphora magna, Diporiphora albilabris, Heteronotia binoei, Ctenotus inornatus, and Ctenotus spaldingi. The restricted range Borroloola Dtella (Gehyra borroloola) was recorded on the rocky ridges at Site 4 (which is within Area E) and Site 5, but not similar Site 3. An estimate of 50 reptiles per hectare was calculated during surveys in October 2010. • One threatened species, Mertens’ Water Monitor (Varanus mertensi), which is listed as Vulnerable was recorded as an incidental observation in a billabong associated with flood-out areas of the upper Towns River in the vicinity of Area F East, as well as adjacent to the MLA areas at the Towns River and Little Towns River crossings of the Savannah Way; Client: Western Desert Resources Ltd Page 72 of 150 Doc No. DW120004-C0302-EIA-R-0036 Doc Title: Appendix D – Terrestrial Biodiversity Technical Report
