myself under no less penalty than that <strong>of</strong> having<br />

my throat cut across, 1 my tongue torn out by its<br />

roots, and my body buried in the rough sands <strong>of</strong><br />

the sea, at low-water mark, 2 where the tide ebbs<br />

and flows twice in twenty-four hours, should I<br />

ever knowingly violate this my Entered<br />

Apprentice obligation. So help me God, and keep<br />

me steadfast in the due performance <strong>of</strong> the same.<br />

W. M.--In token <strong>of</strong> your sincerity, you will now<br />

detach your hands, and kiss the book on which<br />

your hands rest, which is the Holy Bible.<br />

After the candidate has kissed the Bible, he is<br />

asked by the Master:<br />

W. M.--In your present condition, what do you<br />

most desire? Candidate (prompted.)--Light. 3<br />

W. M.--Brethren, you will stretch forth your<br />

hands, and assist me in bringing our newly made<br />

brother to light.<br />

Here the brethren surrounding the altar place their<br />

hands in form <strong>of</strong> duegard <strong>of</strong> an Entered<br />

Apprenticed Mason (see Fig. 1, p. 16).<br />

W. M.--"In the beginning God created the<br />

heavens and the earth. And the earth was without<br />

form, and void; and darkness was upon the face<br />

<strong>of</strong> the waters. And God said, Let there be light,<br />

and there was light." (In some Lodges, at the last<br />

word, "light," the brethren stamp their feet and<br />

clap their hands once; but this is nearly done<br />

away with now-a-days. Too much "Morganry"<br />

about it, as it is styled by Masons.)<br />

Worshipful Master now gives one rap which is<br />

the signal for all to be seated but himself, he<br />

remaining at the altar. I should remark here, that
