J. W.--Right Worshipful, I certainly sympathize<br />

with you for the afflicting calamity which has<br />

befallen your family, and am sorry that it seems<br />

so urgently necessary for you to leave; but could<br />

you not stop a few moments? Brother Gabe has<br />

come on purpose to receive this Degree, and<br />

expects to receive it. I believe he is in the room,<br />

and can speak for himself; and unless he is<br />

willing to put <strong>of</strong>f the ceremony, I do not see how<br />

you can avoid staying.<br />

The candidate, sympathizing with the Master,<br />

says he consents to wait, and by no means desires<br />

the Right Worshipful to stay one moment on his<br />

account.<br />

J. W.--I thank our brother for his courtesy, but I<br />

have other reasons, Right Worshipful, why I<br />

desire you should stay to confer this Degree tonight.<br />

In the first place, it is uncertain when I<br />

myself shall be able to attend again--then we<br />

might not get so many brethren together at<br />

another meeting; and as this is a very difficult<br />

Degree to confer, I feel that you ought to stay.<br />

R. W. M.--Brethren, it is impossible for me to<br />

stay. You will therefore appoint some one to fill<br />

the chair. There are a number <strong>of</strong> brethren present<br />

who are well qualified to confer the degree; you<br />

will therefore please to nominate.<br />

J. W.--I nominate our Brother Senior Warden to<br />

fill the chair.<br />

R. W. M.--Brethren, it is moved and seconded<br />

that Brother Senior Warden fill the chair this<br />

evening, to confer this Degree on Brother Gabe.<br />

All those in favor will signify it by saying aye.<br />

(Two or three <strong>of</strong> the members respond by saying<br />

aye.) Those opposed will say no. (Nearly all the
