Each month in Tewksbury's North
Street School, at least one child per
classroom is honored as "Student of
.he Month."The status is earned as a
result of completing projects (orfa^
voluntary basis) that his/her teacher
considers outstanding in that
classroom. Students are then
honored in the following manner.

to be exchanged at the school store

As concerned residents of
Merrimack Meadows Condo-
minium, we arc writing to ask for
your assistance in improving the
level of fire protection and
emergency medical services for
North Tewksbury. It has come to
our attention that, due to the closing
of the North Fire Station, the
response time from the Center
Station to our location has increased
to a dangerous level.
Prior to the closing of the North
Station, a normal response time was
in the area of about four to five
minutes. Fire apparatus out of the
Center Station requires eight to 10
minutes of travel time to arrive at
our homes. This time can be
increased to 15 minutes plus" if a
train is crossing North Street. This
is an unacceptable amount of time.
To compound our problem, the
ladder truck, which is necessary to
service the three story height of
many of our units, is sitting idle
most of the time due to lack of

The Tewksbury Finance Comm-
ittee will present its annual town
budget overview hearing, live on
cable channel 42, on Thursday,
February 1 If at 7:30 p.m. from the
/town hall auditorium.
Residents wishing to question any
aspect of the town budget are urged
attend. Department heads will be
ask^d by the committee to defend
their budget requests, and questions
frpnylhc public arc invited.
Food collection drive
started in Tewksbury
Community Credit Co. of
Tewksbury is planning to sponsor a
neighbor to neighbor canned food
drive from the Tewksbury Office in
an effort to benefit the Fr. Roche
Food Drive of St. William's
Church.
The drive is scheduled from
February 6 through the 20. Food
items may be dropped off at the
Tewksbury office of Community
Credit, located at 553 Main Street,
next to Papa Gino's at Purity
Supreme Plaza. The office is open
Mon., Tucs., 'Wcrf. and Fri from 9
a.m. to 5 p.«i. and Thurst. from 9
a.m. to 7 p.m;

How you file your tax return
affects how it is processed by the
IRS. Here are some lips:
If you have a high profile item -
a large casualty deduction,
perhaps - that might trigger an
audit, send along detailed
information and substantiation
(photocopies only!) and note it on
the return* too.
If you've lost your W-2 form
and can't get a duplicate from an
employer, you can reconstruct
salary records on Form 4852,
Substitute W-2, and indicate how
you arrived at the figure.
If there's an error on a 1099,
and you can't get it corrected on
lime, enter the incorrect figure (to
match the IRS computer records)
then subtract the incorrect amount
and explain why.
If you can't file on time, you can
get an automatic four month
extension by filing form 4868,
and even request an extra
extension to October 15 - but you
must pay the tax due in April. To
avoid penalties for not filing, file
even if you don't have the cash to
pay.

neighbor to neighbor food drive is

In light of recent fatal fires in
Holyokc, Fitchburg and other
communities, it appears that the
Town of Tewksbury is taking an
unnecessary risk with the lives and
property of sections of the town. As
we understand it, lime is the single
most important factor in saving
lives and protecting property
threatened by fire. Time is also
critical in providing emergency
medical services. We all understand
the fiscal restraints that are in
effect, but docs it make sense to save
money at the cost of human lives?
There is not a shadow of doubt in
any of our minds which is more
important. The actions taken by the
town regarding this matter arc a
plan for potential disaster!
Due to the austere fiscal climate,
the residents of the area previously
serviced by the (now closed) North
Street Fire Station arc being treated
as second class citizens! We arc
paying the same amount of taxes as
residents in the center and south
portions of town, yet, the
probability of increased property
loss and/or loss of life is greater
here due to the increased response
time. In Merrimack Meadows
alone, there are 225 residential
dwellings and approximately four
to five hundred voters. The decision
process that was used to close the
North Fire Station appears to be
biased against North Tewksbury.
We would appreciate your
reconsideration in this matter.
Hopefully, we will be allowed to
have some input into the final
outcome. For as you know, the
registered voters and taxpayers arc
the ultimate authorities.

Day Ball is
February 14
Tewksbury's annual town party,
the President's Day Ball, will be
held on Valentine's Day, featuring
the live big-band music of "After
Hours."
The third annual President's Day
Ball will be held Sunday, February
14, at the Elks hall on Sputh Str,ccl
in Tewksbury. The event will run
from 7 p.m. until midnight.
Tickets are S10 each and may be
purchased in advance at the Town
Clerk's Office, 640-4355, or at the
door on the night of the event.
