SPECIAL CARE NURSERY AT WINCHESTER Final approval has been granted to Winchester Hospital's Special Care Nursery by the Department of Public Health for the use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in infants with premature lung dis- ease. This special waiver has been granted to only two nurseries in the Commonwealth - Winchester Hospital and Newton Wellesley Hospital. Use of CPAP in Level II nurseries is specifically prohibited by the current perinatal regula- tions. The Level II Special Care Nurseries at Winchester and Newton Wellesley hospitals were granted because of the extraor- dinarily high level of subspecial- ty pediatric coverage in the nurseries on a 24-hour-per-day basis. This level of physician coverage is comparable to that found in most Level III neonatal intensive care units in Boston. MENDING HEARTS: WOMEN IN TRANSITION Mending Hearts is a support group for women who are expe- riencing or have experienced '.he loss of a relationship due to separation, divorce or abandon- ment. Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Flores, via the "Lynnfield Villager," has invited all inter- ested seniors to share their experience and expertise with children by volunteering their services within the school sys- tem on every conceivable level; urging them to participate in volunteer work and social activi- ties at each of Lynnfield's four schools, in just about every grade. If the Summer Street School suits their fancy, seniors may read to first graders on the first Wednesday of each month from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. or share stories and talents with second graders one Friday per month from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. Seniors are invited to drop by any day from 2 to 2:45 p.m. to assist third graders in their writers workshops or on the first and last Fridays of the month, to read to those third graders. They can arrange times to share stories, talent or experiences with fourth graders - all by sim- ply calling Principal Janis Rennie. Huckleberry Hill School Principal Dr. Paul Naso has the following openings for volunteers: in second grade classrooms, on Tuesdays from 11:15 to School notes by phyllis nissen 11:45 a.m., reading to and with children; in the media center, every other Tuesday and every Wednesday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., and every other Friday from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.; in the office on Thursdays from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., performing simple clerical chores; and in the computer room, at times to be arranged, performing various computer applications. In January, senior citizens were invited to talk to six fifth grade classes at the middle school about memories of their adolescent lives. This month, seniors are invited to listen to fifth graders read letters they wrote to themselves from the perspectives of the subjects of biographies they read. And in the spring, fifth graders may visit the Cultural Center to see the exhibit on senior citizens' hobbies - teachers want students to learn the value of having life- long hobbies. Sixth graders have invited seniors to tea at various times throughout the winter - and on those occasions, students will interview seniors about their lives as sixth graders, all part of a project focusing on the future. Seventh graders have invited seniors to check out seventh grade immigration diaries and quilts; and in the spring, to hear students' original poetry. As part of a unit on the histo- ry of their town, eighth graders will talk to those who lived it - all of the above plus a coffee, at the invitation of middle school Principal Dr. Kevin Plodzik and housemaster Douglas Russell. Lynnfield High Principal Kristine Burke has information for potential volunteers on everything from various library assignments to mini-courses in Italian or law. Special education staff members invite seniors to read and tape resource roon\ books in school or at home. And Academically Talented Special- ist Ritamarie Macadino has all kinds of plans involving the bravest of seniors, the art of public speaking and fifth graders. LEWIS, D.M.D. GRINDING IN THE NIGHT An estimated one in 20 adults and three in 20 children uncon- sciously grind their teeth at night. It is the sound of bruxism. While the noise may disturb spouses or children, it has a far more dis- tressing effect on the sleeper. Nocturnal grinding can exert thousands of pounds of pressure per square inch on the surfaces of teeth. It can be rough not only on teeth but on the supporting bone, the gums and jaw joint. For many years, bruxism was attributed to the release of tension from emotional stress. However, many dental authorities today believe that the causes exist in the patient's mouth. Night grinding may be an unconscious effort to correct irregularities of the chew- ing surfaces of the teeth. Dentists term this a malocclusion. They grind away to eliminate a spot that is too high or to find a com- fortable place to fit the upper and lower teeth together. If you have this nightly grind problem, your first stop should be your dentist's office...before you do any serious damage to your teeth.
