Angus MacPherson was not feeling well and his wonderful wife, Mary, was reading to him by candlelight. After a while she said, "Angus dear, I have some chores to do down stairs. If you feel yourself slipping away, please blow out the candle." I have two cousins on my mother's side who are nuns. They planned for many years a trip to Ireland. They landed in Shannon Airport and rented a car and away they went touring the beautiful countryside. They weren't watching the fuel gauge so, of course, they ran out of gas. They walked about a mile to a farmhouse where they asked an old farmer for some gas. He said, "Sisters, we don't call it gas over here We call it petrol. I can give you some but the only container I have is a chamber pot." "We don't care, sir," my cousin, Sister Marge, said, "as long as we can get going again." Well, down the road the two Sisters went and later were carefully pouring the petrol into the car's tank when the visiting bishop stopped his car and said, "Sisters, I've been a priest for 30 years and a bish- op for 20 and I've never wit- nessed such unquestionable 'faith' such as this!" The 1993 Buicks, Chevys and Fords are beautiful. I stop and look at them as they go by. I was on Revere Beach last Sunday morning and I heard one seagull ask another, Hey, Ecliff, have you spotted any new cars late- ly?"...Mario DiMino went to Italy last summer. He visited Venice and noticed a sign on a bridge over a canal that said, "Ducka your Heada-Lo Lo Bridgida!" I love Italian and Irish songs like one from Finnian's Rainbow, "How are things in Gloccamorra? Is that little brook still flowing there? Does it run through Donegal, Kilkenny and Kildare?"...etc. And, Italian songs are also beautiful espe- cially when sung by Tommy Flynn, my neighbor. (I'm not kidding.) On my trip to Ireland four years ago, I.kissed^the Blarney ' Stone (how else would I be able to write Woodchips?). Anyway, I remember my Aunt Nora trying to bribe the man who held me by my ankles (while I kissed the stone) to let go. Dreamboats: Suzzanne Geary, Lynnfield; Gail DaSilva, Reading.
