were killed there until Afsh<strong>in</strong> won a victory over Babak about 225/839-<br />

40 and he was killed with various tortures <strong>in</strong> Surra-man-ra'a, as already<br />

mentioned <strong>in</strong> the proper place,1<br />

§4. Khalid rema<strong>in</strong>ed without employment till the death of Mu'tasim<br />

<strong>in</strong> 227/842 and the succession of his son Wathiq. The news reached the<br />

latter of disturbances <strong>in</strong> Armenia caused by the revolt of the ruler (wall)<br />

of Tiflis, ISHAQ b. ISMA'IL. Wathiq summoned Khalid and made him<br />

ruler of Armenia, Azarbayjan and Arran. He gave him 500,000 d<strong>in</strong>ars<br />

for the upkeep (arzaq) of the troops (jund) and i million dirhams by way<br />

of subsidies (ma*una) and sent with him 12,000 horsemen perfectly<br />

equipped, with the order to fight (A 1051b) Ishaq and to liquidate the<br />

trouble. Khalid entered Armenia by the road of Arzan and the pass<br />

(darb) of Bidlis and proceeded to Akhlat, <strong>in</strong> the prov<strong>in</strong>ce of Armenia,<br />

where he rema<strong>in</strong>ed some days. Various (Armenian) patricians and the<br />

stand<strong>in</strong>g army (*askar) of Armenia jo<strong>in</strong>ed him, 20,000 fighters <strong>in</strong> all.<br />

After some days he went forth with them aga<strong>in</strong>st Ishaq. He entered<br />

the prov<strong>in</strong>ce Carnal) of *Jurzan (Georgia) and went to a place called<br />

*Javakh. There he fell ill and with<strong>in</strong> a couple of days died. Thence<br />

he was carried back and buried <strong>in</strong> the Armenian *Dabil (Dv<strong>in</strong>)2 belong<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to the dom<strong>in</strong>ions of Sunbat, son of Ashot, master of * Armenia. This<br />

happened <strong>in</strong> 230/844, and some say <strong>in</strong> *228/842.<br />
