§6, His brother HAYTHAM b, KHALID was governor <strong>in</strong> Sharvan,<br />

When <strong>in</strong> 247/861 disturbances broke out after the murder of Mutawakkil,<br />

Haytham became <strong>in</strong>dependent <strong>in</strong> Sharvan, He was fight<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>fidels<br />

of the country of Sarir (ard al-Sanr), He became known as sharvanshah<br />

and after a time died <strong>in</strong> the year (blank),<br />

He was succeeded by his son MUHAMMAD b, HAYTHAM b,<br />

KHALID who carried on his father's tradition of justice and war aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

the <strong>in</strong>fidel (ghazw wa jihad). He also left exalted memories (ma'atMr)<br />

<strong>in</strong> those parts.<br />

§7, After his death he was succeeded by his son HAYTHAM b.<br />

MUHAMMAD b. HAYTHAM, who led numerous expeditions aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

the <strong>in</strong>fidel. He converted several villages <strong>in</strong>to pious foundations. Their<br />

harvest was collected <strong>in</strong> the granaries which he had built <strong>in</strong> his capital.<br />

Then the gra<strong>in</strong> was distributed among the needy members of the Marches<br />

of the Bab and among the ghazis, As an amir, he was charitable, just<br />

and zealous <strong>in</strong> fight<strong>in</strong>g (the <strong>in</strong>fidel) and he lived long,<br />

§8. Then his son «ALl b. HAYTHAM b. MUHAMMAD became<br />

ruler. He made an agreement with the amir of al-Bab (see §33) to<br />

attack (the <strong>in</strong>fidels of) Shandan, A large number of volunteers and<br />

Qor'an readers (qurra*) from other places rallied to them and, when they<br />

reached the gate (bab "the pass"?) of Shandan, a battle took place which<br />

went unfavourably for the Muslims. cAli b. Haytham and the amir<br />

of al-Bab were taken prisoner together with 10,000 Muslims, The <strong>in</strong>fidels<br />

divided the Muslims among the people of Shandan, the Sarir and the<br />

Khazars. Those who fell <strong>in</strong>to the hands of the men of the Sarir were<br />

freed three months later without ransom.
