it, (The latter) fled from the Sharvan territory, but Sail ax sent a detachment<br />

<strong>in</strong> pursuit which overtook him and killed him near Baylaqan.<br />

In 445/1053 Sallar conquered the castle of Malu (*Malugh?). He<br />

stormed it and then fortified it and placed <strong>in</strong> it a garrison, provisions and<br />

arms. Beside it he built a strong town (madma) <strong>in</strong> which he settled<br />

people and built a cathedral mosque. Thus Sallar carried on fight<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the <strong>in</strong>fidels and protect<strong>in</strong>g the country from their wickedness and harm.<br />

He died on Sunday, 18 Safar 455/20 February I0631 after hav<strong>in</strong>g ruled<br />

some fifteen years.<br />

§19. After him ruled his heir-apparent FARlBURZ b, SALLAR<br />

b. Yazid, <strong>in</strong> whose charge all (the) affairs were even <strong>in</strong> his father's time,<br />

In Rabi< I 455/March 1063 the lord of Arran Shavur b, Fadl entered<br />

Sharvan and stormed the castle of Quylamiyan8 and placed his garrison<br />

<strong>in</strong> it. In the same year he returned and raided Sharvan, brutally plundered<br />

and ru<strong>in</strong>ed it and drove away the flocks and herds. The Sharvanians,<br />

who fought him, were defeated, while many of their notables were taken<br />

prisoner and their property looted. Thence Shavur went to pitch his<br />

tents at the gate of Yazidiya where he captured his daughter, wife (hanm)<br />

of the late Sallar, with all the money and (heavy) baggage belong<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to her. Then he went home to Arran but returned for the third time<br />

<strong>in</strong> Rajab (455)/July 1063, and stayed at the village of Sa'dun burn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

crops, villages and estates. The sharvanshah sent his son Afridun,<br />

accompanied by Anushirvan b. Lashkari, to the Sarfr to ask its ruler,<br />

who was his grandfather (namely, his mother's father), for help. But<br />

he obta<strong>in</strong>ed noth<strong>in</strong>g from him and (B 727) came home after three months.<br />

In Muharram 456/January 1064 the lord of Arran Abul-Aswar<br />

Shavur b. Fadl entered Sharvan (for the fourth time). He captured<br />

K.r and *Qatran and took Hamavan (B: Mawari), Then he went back<br />

leav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Sharvan some of his troops with certa<strong>in</strong> of his amirs, after<br />

he had exacted 40,000 d<strong>in</strong>ars from the country. The sharvanshah<br />

Fariburz made peace with him <strong>in</strong> Rajab/June-July 1064 and Shavur<br />

restored Quylamiyan (?) to him, after hav<strong>in</strong>g obta<strong>in</strong>ed (a further?)<br />

40,000 d<strong>in</strong>ars from him.<br />

In 457/1065 Fariburz collected his army and with it raided the villages<br />

of al-Bab loot<strong>in</strong>g and ru<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g them. While he stayed at *Mihyariya<br />

<strong>in</strong> Masqat, the people of al-Bab fought him at the Qal'aban3 bridge and<br />

he (?) slaughtered a great many of them. The cause of these events<br />

was that the people of al-Bab with their chiefs had revolted aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

their amir Mansur b.
