Child,YouthandFamilyTherapy<br />

The Child Youth and Family Therapy Team in 2010/2011 consisted of four programs; the Family<br />

Therapy Team, funded by Department of Communities to do face to face counselling, with an<br />

emphasis on working systemically with families and relationship issues; Supporting Children after<br />

Separation, funded by FaHCSIA to work with children caught in the tangle of family dissolution;<br />

Family Law Pathways Network, funded by the Attorney General’s Department for the purpose of<br />

promoting conversations between all parties involved in the family law sector to ensure better<br />

outcomes and access to justice for those navigating the system; and Rural Family Counselling,<br />

funded by Dept of Communities for the purpose of giving rural families access to outreach<br />

counsellingservicesinthefarSouthWest.Allprogramsworkfromastrengthsbasethatseespeople<br />

asexpertintheirownlivesandworksystemicallywiththecontextsinwhichtheirlivesoccur.We<br />

aimtoworkrespectfullyandwithwarmth,inawaythatvaluesthestrengthsandpotentialofeach<br />

participantandacceptstheiruniquenessanddiversity.Honestyandtransparencycharacterizeour<br />

practiceasdoesthedesiretoworkcollaborativelywithourparticipantstomakethemostofthe<br />

expertise,knowledgeandresourcesofbothparticipantsandcounsellors.UniquelyinToowoomba<br />

theCounsellingteamsmakewideuseofreflectivepractice.<br />

InFamilyTherapyourbiggestachievementhasbeendealingwiththeinfluxofclientssinceJanuary<br />

10thisyear.OurintakesdoubledinFebruaryandMarchandinthesucceedingmonthstheissues<br />

presentinghavebeenheavilyoverlaidwithgriefandloss.Allstaffhaveworkedbeyondtheirhours<br />

toensurethatparticipantneedshavebeenmetinatimelyfashion.Ithasbeenhearteningtoseethe<br />

wayinwhichcollaborationacrossthesectorshascharacterizedthistime.Inwaysthathavenotbeen<br />

possiblebeforewehaveworkedcloselywithQHealthandotheragenciesandparticipantoutcomes<br />

havebeenmoresuccessfulasa <br />

Ofnotetooisthefactthatafter3yearsofwaitinganddevelopment,wenowhaveaworkingclient<br />

databasethatgivesusreportsandinformationtotrackourprogressandeffectivenessofcounselling<br />

sessions. We are now using the Client Directed Outcomes Inventory (CDOI) at every session and<br />

thereforereceivereliableandwellresearcheddatathatshowsusandourfundingbodiesthatwe<br />

areprovidingaservicewhichachievesworthwhileandsustainableoutcomesforourparticipants.
