12 Child,YouthandFamilyTherapy The Child Youth and Family Therapy Team in 2010/2011 consisted of four programs; the Family Therapy Team, funded by Department of Communities to do face to face counselling, with an emphasis on working systemically with families and relationship issues; Supporting Children after Separation, funded by FaHCSIA to work with children caught in the tangle of family dissolution; Family Law Pathways Network, funded by the Attorney General’s Department for the purpose of promoting conversations between all parties involved in the family law sector to ensure better outcomes and access to justice for those navigating the system; and Rural Family Counselling, funded by Dept of Communities for the purpose of giving rural families access to outreach counsellingservicesinthefarSouthWest.Allprogramsworkfromastrengthsbasethatseespeople asexpertintheirownlivesandworksystemicallywiththecontextsinwhichtheirlivesoccur.We aimtoworkrespectfullyandwithwarmth,inawaythatvaluesthestrengthsandpotentialofeach participantandacceptstheiruniquenessanddiversity.Honestyandtransparencycharacterizeour practiceasdoesthedesiretoworkcollaborativelywithourparticipantstomakethemostofthe expertise,knowledgeandresourcesofbothparticipantsandcounsellors.UniquelyinToowoomba theCounsellingteamsmakewideuseofreflectivepractice. FamilyTherapyTeam: KimColeman DennyEdwards AndrewNicholson RobSandison GayleSainsbury SCASP: JeanSmith NashyeaAbdullah GayleSainsbury FamilyLawPathwaysNetwork: DeanneWhittaker RuralFamilyCounsellor: AggieHarpham KeyDevelopments FamilyTherapyTeam InFamilyTherapyourbiggestachievementhasbeendealingwiththeinfluxofclientssinceJanuary 10thisyear.OurintakesdoubledinFebruaryandMarchandinthesucceedingmonthstheissues presentinghavebeenheavilyoverlaidwithgriefandloss.Allstaffhaveworkedbeyondtheirhours toensurethatparticipantneedshavebeenmetinatimelyfashion.Ithasbeenhearteningtoseethe wayinwhichcollaborationacrossthesectorshascharacterizedthistime.Inwaysthathavenotbeen possiblebeforewehaveworkedcloselywithQHealthandotheragenciesandparticipantoutcomes havebeenmoresuccessfulasa result. Ofnotetooisthefactthatafter3yearsofwaitinganddevelopment,wenowhaveaworkingclient databasethatgivesusreportsandinformationtotrackourprogressandeffectivenessofcounselling sessions. We are now using the Client Directed Outcomes Inventory (CDOI) at every session and thereforereceivereliableandwellresearcheddatathatshowsusandourfundingbodiesthatwe areprovidingaservicewhichachievesworthwhileandsustainableoutcomesforourparticipants.
SupportingChildrenafterSeparation(SCASP) In SCASP too we have noted that the expected grief of children affected by separation has been colouredbythetraumasofthenaturaldisasters.WiththeretirementofTristanMentorinFebruary andtheresignationofSusanStevensinlateApril,JeanSmithandNashyeaAbdullah,whocametous on student placement from USQ, have done a superb job of pulling the programs together and takingthemforward.Jeanhascontinuedtheworkbegunin2009atRockvilleStateSchoolandthisis gaining momentum. Jean and Nashyea have gained great pleasure and notable high quality outcomeswiththeiruseofexpressivetherapies.Ourpuppetcollectionhasgrownconsiderablyand itisinterestingtoseewhat"alterego"thechildrenchoosetobetheirvoice.Weareinvestigating theuseofpuppetsinreflectivepracticewithfamiliesandhopetodomoreofthis inthecoming year. FamilyLawPathwaysNetwork(FLPN) Family Law Pathways Network hosted four seminars at USQ with high quality speakers and presenters. All were well attended and received. At the behest of Family Magistrate Cassidy we began setting up an information table during family law sittings at the Courts in Toowoomba for thosewhoareattendingfamilysittings.WhileFRCandourselvesstaffedthetableattheoutset,we havebeenunabletosustainthissoDeanneiscontinuingonherown.InMaywehostedanevening with Family Magistrate Howard at Picnic Point to introduce him and the family lawyers around Toowoombatothevariousserviceproviderswhoworkwithseparatingfamilies.AsdidFMCassidy, sonowFMHowardisreferringclientstoourvariousservicesaspartoftheirorders.Someofthe local lawyers have expressed their interest in coming to see what happens at 5 Mill St, more especiallyafterJeanenthusiasticallytalkedofherworkwiththechildren.Theyallwantedtocome andplay. An important by product of FLPN meetings is that they have now become the new Interagency ForumforToowoomba. DeannehelpedfacilitatetheQldFLPNconferenceinJunewhichhasbeeninvaluableinpromoting collaborativepracticeacrossQldinthisarea. RuralFamilyCounselling The outstanding achievement of this program in 2011 is the retention of the counsellor in Charleville. Since Kerry Hill left it has been difficult to recruit to that position and we had the unfortunateexperienceofhavingsomeoneforonly5weeksinOctober.Henceourgleeatrecruiting AggieHarphamalocalfromCharlevilletotheposition.Aggies'sbackgroundisnursingandsheisin theprocessofcompletinghercounsellingstudies.Asapersonwithwideexperienceofthebush, Aggie has been able to settle into the job and network with the locals very effectively. She has travelledextensivelythroughoutherareaandnowhasafullparticipantloadwithmorewaiting.We areexcitedabouttheplansthatareinplaceforeffectivegroupslaterintheyear. Trends FamilyTherapyTeam Our biggest challenge remains our waiting list. Most participants now wait up to 4 weeks for an appointmentandwehaveonlyonefemalecounsellorintheTeamatthistime.Someparticipants requestafemalebecauseoftheirpasthistoryandattimes,thisisachallenge.Wecontinuetowork closelywithSCASPandhavemanyfamiliesworkingouttheirseparationchallengesinbothTeams. Thisisaproductivebutresourceintensiveprocesswhichresultsinmoresustainableoutcomeslong term. Our ability to do reflective practice has been a unique and wonderful service to the local community. 13
