The history and memories of the
soon to be demolished Chandless
estate is being documented in an
arts exhibition this April.
Chandless lives on
An exhibition featuring work by
two artists is set to show the
memories of families living on a
central Gateshead estate.
‘Chandless Lives’ by Sharon Bailey
and Robert Soden is the culmination
of a year long project to celebrate
the history of the Chandless estate.
The exhibition will be held at The
Gallery, Gateshead Central Library
from 25 April to 18 May and
feature Robert’s paintings and
sketches, Sharon’s photographs of
residents with their memories and
stories and a history of the estate.
The current Chandless Estate was
built in the 1960s to replace
terraces cleared in the 1950s.
The whole area is currently being redeveloped
and the majority of
tenants have now been re-housed
or are in the process of finding new
homes.
The project was funded through
the Local Community Fund and
managed by Gateshead Council’s
Arts Development Team.
