A number of streets in Chopwell are
part of a scheme that forces
landlords to be licensed and
properly manage their privatelyrented
flats.
Payback time for landlord
A landlord in west Gateshead has
been ordered to pay back more
than £5,000 of rent after being
convicted of operating without a
licence.
Mark Robson, of Sunnybrae,
Greenside, was handed a Rent
Repayment Order for £5,219.77 for
renting out a flat in Chopwell
without a licence.
In this case, as the tenant of the
property was receiving Housing Benefit,
Gateshead Council will reclaim the rent.
The flat in Chopwell is in one of a
number of areas in Gateshead
where a landlord licensing scheme
operates to ensure properties are
properly managed.
Mr Robson had already been found guilty
by Gateshead Magistrates in
September of operating without a
licence.
It is a criminal offence to operate a
privately rented property without a
licence in Chopwell and parts of
Bensham.
Parts of Swalwell are set to follow
in early 2013.
