Tenant gets final warning over garden The Gateshead Housing Company has warned a tenant in the west of the borough that she and her family face eviction unless they keep her garden tidy. Sylvia Hendry, 46, of Eastlands in Winlaton was taken to court after complaints from residents about her overgrown garden and dumped waste. Gateshead County Court granted a yearlong suspended possession order after hearing details of complaints dating back to August 2011 about the garden, rubbish, bulky waste and the vermin it attracted. Despite visits by the housing company and several warnings Hendry continued to leave her garden in a state and left the company with no alternative but to take legal action. The possession order was granted to ensure Hendry keeps her garden clean with the company then having the right to evict her if she doesn’t. Neil Bouch, The Gateshead Housing Company’s Director of Customers and Communities, said: “We want to help people feel happy in their homes and we will not tolerate the unreasonable behaviour of a small minority of tenants whose behaviour causes a disturbance to other residents. “Hopefully this court action will ensure the garden is tidied on a regular basis for her own, as well as for the benefit of others in the area. “The housing company will continue to work with Gateshead Council, the police and the courts to reduce the threat of antisocial behaviour of any kind across the borough.” Residents wanting to report any type of antisocial behaviour should contact their nearest housing office or call 0191 433 5327 from Monday to Friday until 7pm.
