2.2.4 Belgium<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the European Commission (2010), the amount <strong>of</strong> <strong>PFOS</strong> <strong>use</strong>d as<br />

mist suppressant and wett<strong>in</strong>g agent is 218 kg annually. There is no<br />

<strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation on which year data is from. The amount <strong>use</strong>d <strong>for</strong> non-decorative<br />

<strong>hard</strong> <strong>chrome</strong> plat<strong>in</strong>g only will be somewhat smaller.<br />

2.2.5 Czech Republic<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the European Commission (2010), the amount <strong>of</strong> <strong>PFOS</strong> <strong>use</strong>d as<br />

mist suppressant <strong>for</strong> <strong>hard</strong> <strong>chrome</strong> plat<strong>in</strong>g was 278 kg <strong>in</strong> 2007 and 165 kg <strong>in</strong><br />

2008 where the ban <strong>of</strong> <strong>PFOS</strong> entered <strong>in</strong>to <strong>for</strong>ce. Only 23 kg is expected to be<br />

<strong>use</strong>d as both mist suppressant <strong>in</strong> <strong>hard</strong> <strong>chrome</strong> plat<strong>in</strong>g and wett<strong>in</strong>g agents <strong>in</strong><br />

the electroplat<strong>in</strong>g process <strong>in</strong> 2009. The amount <strong>use</strong>d <strong>for</strong> non-decorative <strong>hard</strong><br />

<strong>chrome</strong> plat<strong>in</strong>g only will be somewhat smaller.<br />

2.2.6 Italy<br />

The OECD (2005) survey about the production and <strong>use</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>PFOS</strong> related<br />

substances stated that <strong>in</strong> the year 2003 Italy had a manufacture/import <strong>of</strong> less<br />

than 2000 kg <strong>PFOS</strong> as acid mist suppressant. This amount probably covers<br />

more than just non-decorative <strong>hard</strong> <strong>chrome</strong> plat<strong>in</strong>g and will be lower today<br />

after the restriction <strong>of</strong> <strong>PFOS</strong> has entered <strong>in</strong>to <strong>for</strong>ce. Furthermore, this amount<br />

could represent a produced amount (the survey just states<br />

“manufacture/import”). The <strong>PFOS</strong> may there<strong>for</strong>e be sold and <strong>use</strong>d <strong>in</strong> other<br />

countries and not only <strong>in</strong> Italy.<br />

However, accord<strong>in</strong>g to the European Commission (2010), the amount <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>PFOS</strong> <strong>use</strong>d as mist suppressant <strong>for</strong> <strong>hard</strong> <strong>chrome</strong> plat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Italy is zero. In this<br />

document it is stated that <strong>PFOS</strong> is “not <strong>use</strong>d <strong>in</strong> processes subject under the<br />

derogation <strong>in</strong> paragraph 3 (c) <strong>of</strong> Directive 2006/122/EC”, i.e. mist<br />

suppressants <strong>for</strong> non-decorative <strong>hard</strong> <strong>chrome</strong> plat<strong>in</strong>g (chromium-(VI)) and<br />

wett<strong>in</strong>g agents <strong>for</strong> <strong>use</strong> <strong>in</strong> controlled electroplat<strong>in</strong>g systems.<br />

2.2.7 Romania<br />

In April 2008, the M<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> Environment and Susta<strong>in</strong>able Development <strong>in</strong><br />

Romania has <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>med the Secretariat <strong>of</strong> the Stockholm Convention that<br />

Romania neither produces nor <strong>use</strong>s <strong>PFOS</strong> (SSC, 2008). This is also reported<br />

<strong>in</strong> the document from the European Commission (2010). In this document, it<br />

is stated that <strong>PFOS</strong> is “not <strong>use</strong>d <strong>in</strong> processes subject under the derogation <strong>in</strong><br />

paragraph 3 (c) <strong>of</strong> Directive 2006/122/EC”, i.e. mist suppressants <strong>for</strong> <strong>nondecorative</strong><br />

<strong>hard</strong> <strong>chrome</strong> plat<strong>in</strong>g (chromium-(VI)) and wett<strong>in</strong>g agents <strong>for</strong> <strong>use</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> controlled electroplat<strong>in</strong>g systems.<br />

2.2.8 Slovenia<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to European Commission (2010), Slovenia <strong>use</strong>d 65 kg <strong>PFOS</strong> as a<br />

wett<strong>in</strong>g agent <strong>for</strong> <strong>chrome</strong> (VI) plat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 2008. The amount <strong>use</strong>d <strong>in</strong> 2007 was<br />

about the same (about 54 kg).<br />

2.2.9 UK<br />

The OECD (2005) survey about the production and <strong>use</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>PFOS</strong>, PFAS,<br />

PFOA, and related substances, stated that the UK manufactured/imported<br />
