Preface<br />

This project was <strong>in</strong>itiated by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency as<br />

part <strong>of</strong> the programme “Miljøeffektiv Teknologi – <strong>Substitution</strong> af<br />

problematiske kemikalier” (Environmentally effective technology –<br />

<strong>Substitution</strong> <strong>of</strong> problematic chemicals”.<br />

The project was carried out <strong>in</strong> the period August 2009 to February 2011.<br />

Sidsel Dyekjær and Mikkel Aaman Sørensen from the Danish EPA supervised<br />

the project.<br />

The purpose <strong>of</strong> this project was to f<strong>in</strong>d an alternative to <strong>PFOS</strong> <strong>use</strong> as a mist<br />

suppressant <strong>in</strong> non-decorative <strong>hard</strong> <strong>chrome</strong> plat<strong>in</strong>g, a <strong>PFOS</strong> <strong>use</strong> which<br />

presently is exempted from the EU ban <strong>of</strong> <strong>use</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>PFOS</strong>, beca<strong>use</strong> <strong>of</strong> lack <strong>of</strong><br />

alternatives.<br />

Various chemical and physical alternatives were tested <strong>in</strong> laboratory scale. A<br />

non-<strong>PFOS</strong> alternative as mist suppressant chemical was tested <strong>in</strong> a larger scale<br />

at a <strong>hard</strong> <strong>chrome</strong> plat<strong>in</strong>g company <strong>in</strong> Denmark.<br />
