This ratio was used to calculate the FeO value for I. The FeO value for the composite analysis was based on the total Fe, the direct S, and the metallic Fe values. The metallic Fe value in I was determined by correcting the total Fe value in I for Fe combined as FeS and FeO. The normative composition of the Harleton meteorite, calculated from the analysis, is given in Table 2. The figures are consistent with the observed mineralogical composition. From the analysis acid-soluble silicate, which is olivine, amounts to approximately 42%, compared to 43.2% in the norm; acid-insoluble silicate (pyroxene and plagioclase) is 42%, and the norm shows 9.8% plagioclase and 30.4% pyroxene. The chemical and mineralogical composition of the Harleton meteorite shows that it is a typical olivine-hypersthene chondrite, according to the classification of Prior (1920). The total iron content, 22.6%, is that of an L (low-iron) group chondrite in the Urey-Craig classification (1953). Van Schmus and Wood (1967:764) classify Harleton as an L6 chondrite.
