295. Byron (George Gordon Noel, Lord).- Forgery [by Major<br />
Byron] of an autograph letter purportedly from Lord Byron to James<br />
Cawthorn, 1Ωpp., folded sheet, rather soiled and with vertical<br />
crease, preserved in cloth portfolio with related notes loosely<br />
inserted, 4to, “Newstead Abbey, Sept. 1st 1811” [water-marked<br />
“J.Whatman 1805”]. £150 - £200<br />
*** Forgery by the notorious Major Byron, George Gordon de<br />
Luna Byron, who claimed that he was the poet’s illegitimate son<br />
by a Spanish lady, and who, in 1848, sold several forged letters<br />
supposedly by Byron, Keats and Shelley to a London bookseller<br />
through his wife. This letter is recorded in Marchand’s edition<br />
of Byron’s Letters and Journals, vol.2 p.280, along with 3 other<br />
forgeries. James Cawthorn was the publisher of English Bards and<br />
Scotch Reviewers.<br />

co n s tA n t i n o p L e, 2 vol., second edition, with engraved frontispiece,<br />
folding map of Hellespontine Phrygia, one facsimile, 2 leaves of<br />
musical notation and 8 hand-coloured aquatints of costumes and<br />
views only (of 25 in total, lacking map of Albania, one facsimile<br />
and 10 plates), some folding, engraved plate of Turkish bath loosely<br />
inserted from another copy, directions to binder leaf loose, some<br />
light browning and offsetting, 4I soiled and with small hole affecting<br />
a couple of letters, contemporary half calf, spine gilt with roan<br />
labels (one chipped), rubbed, [Abbey Travel 202; cf.Atabey 584 &<br />
Blackmer 821, first editions], 4to, 1813; sold not subject to return<br />

*** John Cam Hobhouse, Baron Broughton (1786-1869), politician<br />
and friend of Byron who accompanied him on this journey to<br />
Constantinople. Hobhouse later acted as Byron’s executor.<br />
